IR film

How can one possibly get handholdable speeds on the Rollei? Every recommendation I've seen is roughly in line with the one on Freestyle - ISO 25 with the R72 filter in place. That's 3 stops of density, I believe, which would be 1/6 at f16 on a bright sunny day. Yes, that's handholdable in theory, I guess, but thta's cutting it awfully close. And I have read of it being more like ISO 12 with the R72. Better than ISO 1, I will admit.

In full sunlight my best exposure with a 720nm filter on Rollei IR was 1/30 seconds at f/8.
If you open up a bit more I suppose you could get speeds safe for handholding. Like 1/60s at f/5.6, or even 1/125s at f/4. But why bother? Trees and grass won't go anywhere. There's plenty of time to install a tripod. :-)

Oh, and I have used Rollei IR handheld a lot, as a regular ASA 400 film. I found it perfect for candid portraits of my daughters, who won't stand still for more than two seconds. Lovely tonality, just lovely. Too bad it's too expensive to use as an all-around film, and too bad it's unusable in large format.

I tried a roll of Rollei Superpan 200 once in 120 size and developed it in Rodinal, since it was what I had handy. I'm not sure if Rodinal is the best developer for this film, but the results were very grainy, esp for a 120 film. They were grainier than Agfa Scala, Bergger 200, Kodak TMY-2 and a slew of other slower films developed in Rodinal. I'm not commenting on its IR sensitivity, just the grain. It is also possible to achieve some near-IR effects with Rollei R3.

Rollei Super Pan 200 should have an RMS just around the APX100 and a resolution over that of APX100.
This film is going to 750nm in wavelenght and therefore compete with the SFX 200 (Ilford) film.
It's an easy film for push processing and therefore successfully in the iso range 160-400. Here an 35mm example of Super Pan 200 on E.I. 400.
Developer: AM74/RHS

Here's a 100% crop from the wall area between the two benches. I haven't shot this film side-by-side with any others, but just from looking at grain patterns of other films I've developed in Rodinal 1:50, this seems to be one of the grainier ones, tho perhaps the grain is more pronounced in the TIFF file from the negative scan and not a JPEG to post online. I can't speak for resolution tho.

00TEz6-130855584.jpg.a134b139a8f9bb77238aa7f7ccc89e1a.jpg

I am not sure what a Rollei "3" is but I think you may mean a 3.5. I am going to assume it uses 120 size, what ever it is you have.

Fuji Acros 100 or Neopan 400 is about the cheapest and yet is a very good all around film to start with.

After that, it depends on what you like to do and what look you like. I suggest buying a selection and giving them all a try, Efke, Kodak, Ilford, and many others are great starters. If you were asking about IR film, Efke and Rollei both make good IR film as you can see by this thread. They are different and good in thier own way.
I personally like the Efke, the emultion is soft, so use a hardener, or be really careful with it during processing.
