What camera(s) are you using this holiday season?

Recommended Posts

The holiday season is upon us, which means lots of family gatherings, which, in turn, mean lots of opportunities to annoy our loved ones by taking pictures of them. :) So, to complement the "what are you hoping to get this Christmas?" thread, it only seemed fair to start the complementary, "what are you hoping to shoot with this holiday season?" thread.

For the past several years, I've been preserving most family gatherings for posterity with a 6x9cm/2x3in press camera. For a couple years it was always a Speed Graphic, and one year it was a Busch Pressman, but lately it's been a baby Crown Graphic, usually with a large-ish flashgun, and this Christmas promises to be no different: Ilford XP2 in an RB67 back on a Crown Graphic, with a 101/4.5 Ektar and a Sunpak 411.

This was taken this summer, at my grandfather-in-law's birthday party; the same Crown Graphic, handheld, on Fomapan 400; 1/100 second at f/5.6, no flash:

(Scanned from a print, which is much nicer than the scan, alas.)

So... What camera(s) will you be annoying your relatives with this holiday season?

Well I'll cheat a bit... I have already been shooting my kids with film. Unfortunately not a real classic, but on that

fits my needs perfectly. A Yashica T3 with the 2.8 Tessar Ah mmhh AFmmmhh and flash.Tomorrow when my wife's family is here I will probably use the same or the Contessa.. just loaded that with slide film! But I'll be the only one with a camera, and they'll all be pestering me after christmas.. where are the photos you took... maybe move the flash over to the Contaflex and use the Contessa/slides for something else! I don't know.. I like shooting my Classics, but I do it for ME and when others are involved ...well it's just not the same!

Well, they're forecasting 86F today with 80% humidity, so I'll probably be shooting indoors where it's air conditioned (just thought I'd throw that in for all of you who are sitting @ss deep in snow). I don't like using flash, so I am taking the Yashica Lynx 14 with its fast f1.4 lens.

Just got myself a new Ebony SV45U2 for xmas. It replaces one I had but agreed to sell to a customer a while back (I am an Ebony dealer). This is an awsome camera, a word I never use. I have been putting a 300 or 360mm lens on it to photograph closeups of the models from a comfortable distance. It also has a rear shift which gives you 4 1/2 inches each on two negatives to be stitched or shown next to each other, making it almost a 4x9. No family pictures though. My wife is working xmas eve and day.

Not a lot of holiday shooting, but I'll be out and about from time to time with one or the other Nikon F, and am about to load up a nifty little Sears 35rf (a Ricoh under the skin) that I got the other day at Goodwill for 8 bucks. And I will confess that I also usually have my nasty little old 1.1 megapixel Kodak digital in the car for those non-critical hip shots that go into emails, etc.

It's raining and warm here so I will use my Canon FTb with the 1.2 lens, Fujicolor Pro 400H and double check meter readings on the camera with my Gossen Luna Pro. I haven't shot it in over two years. And by the way I would appreciate seeing your results you shot with the camera of choice posted here in a couple of days. Title it "Holiday Hits" or miss.

my holiday rig is a Minox GL and little Vivitar 2000 bounce unit... fix it at f5.8 and focus either at 6ft or 10ft and you can shoot any holiday event and get stunning results. I'm ot typically big on a 35mm FL, but for casual gatherings it just works... why fight it... plenty of time to shoot my Retina the rest of the year :)

I have a Canon F-1 with a 35/2 FD SSC (1st version) and a Vivitar 252 flash, a Minolta X-700 with the 360PX and various lenses: 28/1.9 Vivitar Series 1, 35/1.8 MC Rokkor, 50/1.4 MC Rokkor PG and 100/2.5 MC Rokkor, a Bronica SQ-A with the 50/3.5 PS and 80/2.8 PS lenses with the waist level finder and finally a Nikon Pronea S with the excellent 20-60mm IX Nikkor zoom. The Canon has 200 speed color print film, the X-700 will have 400 or 800 speed color rpint film, the Bronica has a roll of Portra 800 120 in it and the Pronea has whatever I have lying around for it.

Nikon F-100 and Rolleicord Vb with 6X4.5 adaptor, both with Metz 54 MZ - 4i. Gold 100 for the F-100, Neopan 400 for the Rollei. Cold and snowing here, so will just take whatever opportunities present themselves, might actually not even venture out if it stays ugly.

Hope all your shots are good ones. My brother in law has an F-1, loves it, many years of service, couple of CLA's, light seals, zero failures. His Canon lenses I think are among the very best made, all primes, 35, 50 and 135, beautiful results.

Enjoy the holidays
