A lot of adapters needed to bring up the right framelines in the viewfinder to cover the altered lens coverage. Now there where there is money to be made from this abortion of an idea. FF rules crop is cr*p, it costs too much in the end and makes expensive lenses into paper weights. Add special ultrawides to make up for other lenses no longer wide angles means more cost, and carrying bigger bags, heavier kit and adapters to get the camera to show the right framelines.

Indeed. Quite a few people are saying their Leica reps have told them it's going to be a 1.3 or 1.33 crop factor. Personally I think this would be acceptable. 21mm =28mm. 28mm = 35mm. 35mm = 45mm. 40mm = 52mm for example. Not so keen on those 50mm's turning into 65's though.

The question is however; which framlines will be fitted. Unfortunately probably nothing for the 40mm unless Leica start making a new 40mm Summicron/Lux.

...and Brad and his cohorts will have no more excuses to avoiding buying Leica cameras.

Cohorts? Grow up Al.

Why would I want to take a major step backward and buy an overpriced

leica digital? BTW, it will be a joke if it comes with a crop factor - which it will, of course. Ha!

...I'm trying to retire, I'm still getting assignments, ...

Al, please, not while I'm drinking milk. Two jet streams of white liquidy ejecta came shooting

out

my nostrils at velocities approaching Mach 1 after reading that hokum.

I hate it when that happens...

Brad, you're late on this thread. We are far past your stage. Doublecheck.
As for the brightlines - what's the big deal? As the digital M will be a dedicated body it will have a dedicated VF which will compensate for whatever crop factor. Tss...

Oh, and G4, I enjoyed browsing thru your immensely rich portfolio! Haven't opened that new thread headlining it, so far, but just wanted to deposit my comment here. BTW, what kind of camera did/do you use for your film based, grainy b&w stuff?

True. Leica won't tell them that.

For this project to stand a decent chance, I'm not sure an effective 21mm "Leica-produced" photo will be essential. I'd say you've gotta have an effective 35, 50 (or close), portrait length, and probably something as wide as 28. All of them pretty fast, too -- not a "digi Tri-Elmar" at f/4.0, though I wouldn't be shocked if something like that turns up.

Leica must be aware that loads of the reasonably faithful customers (perhaps all but the diehards) already have or at least have tried some 3rd party optics. Bodies too.

Leica's so late in arriving at what's now a pretty mature technology (dig imaging), and they (the cameras) are going to be so expensive ... It won't be easy.

They will have to display some imagination, which will piss off the faithful/collectors, but

they are only keeping the company on life support, anyway.

I still say they should do what Canon won't, and that's make fast prime lenses dedicated to

whatever the new sensor crop turns out to be. There are quite a few Leica users out there

who have gone digital but still shoot with their M's for their own pleasure, so perhaps the

market for a digital M is better than one might think.

leicas maintain their value, you shoulda kept at least one so you could retire

Makes sense my $2,000 D100 is worth loose change in my pocket.

Maybe a $5,000 D2X will make me a better photographerナ. okay, it will eventually be worth loose changeナ. but, hey, Iメm going to be the man!

That super fast auto focus, low noise, and lots of lovely pixelsナI just have to work harder to get one.

I wonメt to be a proper photographerナyes, I do!

I've got a Leica i'm special...i've got the latest tech i'm super special....yeh, right on..

Lovely photo,Lutz.

d100's are actually still in high demand surprisingly....when the d200 comes out, it might be another story tho :)

fact is film cameras havnt changed must over the past 15 years. digital is in its infancy, and still evolving...at some point digital will top out as did film cameras, and probably be replaced by microchips in the brain everytime one blinks, a pic is made...who knows

d100's are actually still in high demand surprisingly....reallyナwowナyouメve got to be kidding, right! And I thought the D70 was the death of themナjust shows how wrong i can be.

and probably be replaced by microchips in the brain

There, Iメve just got to wait a bit longer to be a super photo man.

I feel better now not having to worry about having lots of pixels.

Nels, your idea of having an mp3 player built into the new Leica MD isn't that stupid at all. Nokia and others have been building phones with cameras with zeiss lenses - so let's rethink the whole thing and see what we could come up with if the camera and not the phone was the primary thing.

In fact, I would love to see Leica be the first company to launch a camera with a built-in 3G telephone, internet, e-mail, mp3 player, calculator and wi-fi as well as bluetooth. That could all be easily accomodated within the M6 ttl body (which, as all Leica specialists know, is a bit higher than the M6). And the hi resolution screen on the back of the camera would serve well also for e-mail and internet.

The wi-fi would not only facilitate mail and Internet, but would also enhance transfer of raw files to your computer so that you don't need to remove the 2 gb SD-card for that. A combo of this sort would also provide sufficient ram to provide a large buffer, so that we do not again experience the shutter delay from which we have all suffered so much on the Digilux 2.

The built-in bluetooth will enable use of the phone via a separate earpiece in stereo (also used for the mp3 player)and and a separate microphone, so that you can direct your office or have a nice chat with your mother-in-law while taking pictures. Using a speparate earpiece and microphone connected via bluetooth would also look less surprising than seeing people holding the bottom of their cameras onto their cheeks, since the bottom was the only place where Leicas engineers could find enough space to install an ear-piece and microphone into the Leica MD.

Perhaps Leica could take up the idea of launching versions of the camera without some of these enhancements. Such models with only the basics installed could then be called MDs (s for simple).

Happy X-mas

One of the joys of my Canon G3 is the movie mode, where one can record a movie with sound. Since the digital M won't be a SLR, it will not take much space or technology to incorporate movie mode into the camera. Imagine, Leica quality movies to see on your pc!

At a minimum, the digi M has to be better than the Epson digi. Having never handled either, I await the pronouncements of the wizards here. I wish Jay was around. He surely would have bought one and pnotificated about it, with extreme intelligence, and no bias.
