andy_hebert
Ok maybe this is a stupid question but I was wondering if I could ask them cut and mount my negatives like slides. I prefer scanning and storing slides so haveing the negative in the slide older would be nice. Would they be able to do this or would they laugh at me? Optical printing would be of no matter since they would be scanned in and then printed if any printing was to be done. Thanks all.
SCL
Buy the cardboard mounts & do it yourself, that way they can't laugh at you.
oceanphysics
You can certainly ask "them," whoever they are. They don't bite. If the lab in question mounts slides then they can certainly mount negatives, and probably would even do it. Your local minilab doesn't have slide mounts because they don't develop slides. You can buy slide mounts, so if you can operate a pair of scissors you can do it on your own. What's wrong with scanning and storing negatives in strips? Strange request if you ask me. A lot of people who scan slides don't bother to get them cut or mounted.
discpad
Scanning mounted slides generally does not produce results as good as the unmounted film.
ilkka_nissila
It depends on the scanner obviously, but usually you get better flatness scanning film strips than mounted slides. I have no trouble with either though. I prefer the handling characteristics of mounted film.
Ed_Ingold
It's not a stupid question. With respect to film flattness, the stupid part comes later.
leicaglow
Also, rather than mounting them in cardboard mounts, look into the Agfa or Gepe (I don't know who makes them now), glass mounts. They are of great quality and keep the film flat if you want to enlarge them.
randrew1
I don't know what they do today, but 10 years ago, Sports Illustrated mounted all their negatives before scanning. At one time their workflow used only slides. When they started using negative film, it made sense to fit them into a similar workflow.
