???

The game of likes on NW, etc. Quite honestly, NW also was much better in my opinion before the switch to PN(2)v2. One simply posted images, and if a particular one caught my eye, I'd make mention of it either by means of a comment accompanying a critique or by emailing the photographer.

Sorry, but the death of my friend is resulting in my thinking being subpar.

No apologies necessary. Communication on the Internet can be hard. And my thoughts are with you at this time of your friend’s passing.

In my previous incarnation, I was at first disgusted by the introduction of likes, thinking they went along with the Facebooking of PN. I asked for a dislike button, partly sarcastic but partly in seriousness. I was, of course, ignored.

After a period of refusing to use them, I figured I’d give them a try so as not to judge without experience, since I’m not on Facebook or other social media. I accumulated quite a few of them and tried not to play the game of you like me I like you but rather savor my giving of likes and limit them to photos I really thought stood out, often the less popular photos posted. I started noticing how many people were doling out likes a mile a minute but obviously withholding them from people who didn’t reciprocate. It started to ruin No Words for me.

When I returned as The Shadow, I simply decided to stop using them and it’s liberating.

Related to the other thread on revival of older No Words threads, which I think is a fine practice, I notice how much cleaner they are without all the likes. It’s about the photos and the visual dialogue and not the competition or pats on the back.

I know, I know, there are people who use likes very genuinely and consider them just an acknowledgment or nod to the photographer. It’s a quick gesture. So, really, no harm no foul. It’s just not for me and there is a darker side to some usages that is unfortunate.

There’s always something new under the sun.

I was hoping for info on my dads old German camera but not all of my questions were answered here so I did what any sensible photographer would do . I just bought more of them until I figured it out.... Got some help from someone on the Zeiss facebook page as well then it ran away with me.... Got 4 of the same camera and 1 later version as well. Plus filters and additional lenses and leather cases and manuals ect. ect. But I know how to use them now and they all work even though I got them "as is" and "untested."

So in a way the answer is yes to your question , in a round about way. The lack of info made me hungry for more kit ..... I will search the site to get opinions on other vintage lenses as well But I wouldn't say that I would be influenced to by any new gear.

I've been taking photographs now for about 50 years! Photo.net wasn't around then, of course. I know I was influenced by Adams, Weston and others, including the photo journalists of Life and Look. Those influences combined with my own innate way of seeing have naturally grown into my own style in which I am very comfortable and do effortlessly. I can't say that what I see here influences my own way of seeing. I do enjoy photo.net because I can see the amazing work of others who are see differently from me and create images that I would not think of.
