    Three trees

This photo mezmerizes me. It invokes a feeling of peace, of being in the present, but with a faint sense of foreboding beyond the beauty. So lovely.

I really like this photo. The cat is gorgeous, her expression is quite soothing, the diagonal path of the shadow is nice, and I like the simplicity of the background. I know that trying to photograph a cat in the sun is tough - especially a cat with such a range of light and dark coat. Yet, this photo still retains detail in the cat's dark, shadowed face, and the light fur in the bright light is not "blown out." Good job. You are lucky to have such a beautiful model :-)

Just a side note: I would suggest that you resize the image before posting. The 'small' version is, by design, just thumbnail size and is therefore too small to really examine the image. I think the 'large' version is the same size as whatever you upload, and the medium is some fraction of that. On my 19" monitor, the 'medium' and 'large' versions of your image are too big for the screen. If the maximum dimension of what you upoad is about 1000 pixels, it helps us to view it.

Getting this shot was just luck. I was lounging on the front porch, and saw this mantis walking in the rock garden just beyond the porch. He was BIG: 4 or 5 inches long. I moved slowly around him and he didn't seem to mind.

I would not manipulate this at all. Although the suggestions above might make it look more 'picture-postcard', I think it would be less real and less interesting.

Did you use a polarizer? The clarity of the underwater logs makes me think "yes," but the brilliant reflection of the mountains makes me think "no."

My reaction to this photo is similar to that when I first visited the Grand Canyon: all thoughts leave my head and I must sit down and stare.

I will try to answer, although it is hard to pinpoint why some photos just 'grab' you. I like the simplicity of color and pattern, the overall diagonal sweep, the elegant shape of the leaf. The darkness of the background adds mystery.

    CAT!

I, too, have trouble getting the cat to hold still for photos. But this time I got lucky with some accidental reverse psychology: I was photographing flowers in the dining room and paying no attention to the cat. He came to see what I was doing and the birds outside caught his attention. I turned the camera and got a couple pictures of him before he became self-conscious and left. ;-)

  1. What a beautiful shot! The very dark background really sets off the detail, colors, and shine of the pod. I also like how there is not much else in the picture to distract the eye - just the small amount of branch/vine to anchor the subject. My guess is that it is a milkweed.

When I first saw this on the screen, it made me pull back. Were you

startled? I increased the constrast with Photoshop - is it too much?

    Thank you for your input!
