  1. Wow, excellent colors and subject matter. A couple things did come to mind while I was looking at the picture: The image is not quite straight. It's something that throws me off a little. Also, not really a critique, but something I'd be curious to see. I wonder what the image would look like if both the glass was sharp and the background... shot at a f32 maybe? Good job though, and I love France. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. No, my friend wasn't aware that I was taking this shot, otherwise it might have never happened. Since it was a park and I didn't want to get clubbed by some rangers, I had to leave the benches in place. I kind of like the photo the way it is. Getting a different shot of the mountains would have proved difficult as I was standing on a pile of rocks. Thanks though.

    Water drops

This feels pretty surreal to me. I really like it... the texture of the water is amazing, and the lighting is good. If you reattempt this, maybe you should zoom in closer next time so the water extends all the way to the top corners. Good job.
  2. Well, the composition is interesting enough, but your tonal range seems flat to me. Everything seems like a bland shade of gray to me... there needs to be some lighter features, as well as darker ones. Try re-printing with a higher contrast filter, or reshoot this one with different lighting.
  3. Well, I know you don't really have control over concert lighting conditions at all, but you probably can do some adjustments in photoshop. Anyways, the biggest issue I have with this is the very washed out gray of the whole image. This may just be my opinion, but the background should be dark black. The image needed to be exposed differently. What piece of advice can I possibly offer for shooting in this situation? Bracket your film and shoot in volume. Concerts are tricky, but you should get some useful images out of it if you follow that advice. Good luck.

Nice tonal range, cute model, I like her expression and pose. The only criticism I can come up with would be the same as the one above... crop part of the top of the picture off. Otherwise, it's good. You have some great work, keep it up.

Just a thought... the lighting doesn't look all that great to me. The rocks look fairly uninteresting. Try taking this at a different time of day, closer to sunset where the light is going to get a bit redder and see how it turns out. You do have a great understanding of the shutter speeds that's necessary to get the water to look good, so just work from here. Enjoy.
  4. The thing that really caught my eye about this photo was the look and feel of the stream. I think you have the perfect exposure time on that, but overall, nothing beyond the stream itself seems to catch my interest. I love the tones in this photograph, but the framing doesn't quite feel right to me. Some things I'd suggest trying: get the camera closer to the ground (try a different angle). Maybe try framing a scene around the water flowing around some of those rocks. Keep up the good work.
  5. The truth is, I cannot remember what the settings were. What I do remember was struggling with trying to get a decent shutter speed, a workable depth-of-field, while trying to shoot pictures without a tripod. Trying to guestimate here... somewhere between 1/10th and 1/20th of a second, but don't take my word for it.

Well, the subject matter is interesting enough, but to me, the colors look a little washed out. The blue of the sky could be contrasting the red of the roof more. The greens of the field appear a little too light. I have some suggestions to try: try underexposure by about half a stop. Also, I know this isn't always possible or convenient, but try shooting at a different time of day, either near sunrise or sunset to get different lighting. I love your other work, keep it up.
  6. Well, just my humble opinion, but the lighting needs to be altered a little in this picture. Somewhere to the left of the frame, I think a reflector of some sort needed to be placed. It's a good photo, but the huge dark area tends to pull my eyes away. Keep up the good work.
