1.
All good comments. Thanks everyone!

 2.
I received it from a colleague who was going FX...and I knew it was suspect. Not worth the repair cost probably. Selling it "as is" right now.

 3.
Eric, it was just soft, in the middle. And almost like it had an astigmatism... blotchy. only lens I had that was like that./

 4.
good grief. it's a 20% crop....talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. Regardless, even this one is 2X sharper than the Nikon lens. Like I said, pretty sure I had a bad copy...doesn't mean apples to apples... the Sigma is better than the Nikon. of course, not

 5.
It has bugged me for over a year. Not so sharp photos coming from my Nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX lens.

I had tried Fine Tuning to the nth degree and to no avail... just started to think that it was just me being too picky.

So...I went ahead and bought a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 and today shot a family in the park. Om my God! What an improvement. Sharp as a tack and incredibly rich with good bokeh. Now I see what I was missing and should never have put up with this for so long.

 6.
I have a new lens and just wanted to get your take on the importance (or unimportance) of adding a filter.

Pros and cons?
Thanks

 7.
All great suggestions. I'll try some of these. Appreciate it!

I would like your insight and help/

Lens in question: Nikon DX 17-55 f2.8
Camera bodies tried on: Two D300s and two D7100... sample bad results.
Tried AF fine tune in each (-20 all the way up to +20), no consistent better sharpness.

Only thing I have not tried is adding a filter.

Here is a typical photo. F2.8 in this case...

 9.
I have the DX's Nikon 17-50 f2.8 and Sigma 50-150 f2.8 and that will handle 95% of what I need (sports, outdoor portraits and events)

 10.
White balance set to flash by error??? easy to do that rotating dials, etc. take a look

 11.
No Bob H., not one of those. Back in the 80's, Pentax 35mm.

 12.
Yes, she was tickled. I told her to just play with her son and let the two of them just have fun and that I would work around that. She said she was very happy with all of the photos. :)

 13.
Photographed a woman and her son in the park on Sunday and I really like the upgrade in pixel count and IQ that I am getting with my new D7100 vs my older D300.
So GLAD I took the advice of many on here and took the plunge. :)

 14.
I bought a new D7100 to replace one of my D300's that shutter failed on me... love the D7100... just a bit small for my liking but I guess I will get used to it...even with the battery grip I bought.

 15.
Update: The shutter was dead.

I sold it for parts on eBay..... and then bought a brand new D7100. :)

 18.
"Err" flashes.

I was shooting (remote control) the finish line on a 10K race and about 400 shots in, once i reviewed the photos... I get one that has a lighter exposure band near the top half of the image.. Then, the next 10 images have what looks like a black diagonal line (out of focus) covering about half of the image.... then the next 600 photos are completely black.

I took the lens off and looked inside... cleaned the electrical pins inside the camera, then watched the mechanism. The mirror up works, but there is a small black object at the bottom of the sensor inside the camera.

I got my other (good) D300 and looked inside too, and it looks different without the black object at the bottom.

The camera that has "Err" has 70,00 actuations.

So....is this the kiss of death and therefore a shutter failure??

 19.
I see a couple of motion sensor triggers for cameras online with some patchy reviews here and there, I am wanting to free up a photographer within a mud run or at the finish line of a running race... and was wondering if I could put such a device on my camera on a tripod and see if you could adjust the sensitivity to shoot the runner, for example, coming across the finish line.

Anyone have any experience with such a device? I'd be interested in how well it worked.

thanks

 20.
I rarely shoot raw because the market for most of my prints/digital is ton and gun and/or newspaper/publication quality. So I shoot .jpg fine most of the time... Bottom line, don't think the small cache limit would affect me much. I'm more interested in less noise and the AF being at least as good as the D300 and still using my DX lenses... no need here to upset the applecart to go FX.

 21.
thanks so far.
70% is outdoor with good light.
30% indoor or night with sometimes terrible lighting.

 22.
I've read three reviews on the D7100 (one on this website) but I am on the fence whether to sell one of my old D300's and upgrade to the D7100.

I shoot sports mostly. Professionally 5Ks, marathons, mud runs, sports journalism, etc. So I like the reach the cropped sensor gives me. In poor lighting conditions is where i would hope a stop or two would make a difference in noise at that level.

So...I have the money, I just don't want to waste it... if I will really not see much of a difference in IQ or noise or both. Don't want to be disappointed.

What am I missing? Anyone out there upgraded to the D7100 who shot thousands and thousands of photos like I did on my D300s. (the one I am considering selling has about 78K actuations so I'd like to take the opportunity to possibly upgrade).

Help me out!
Oh....and most of my lenses are fast (f2.8s and f1.4s)

 23.
Good discussion. I hope it turns around here. I'll be the first to help.

 24.
Well said. I am glad I am not alone. I am a professional and you'd think some of the posters got the Pulitzer Prize in photography....every year...for the past 10 years.
In fact, they have a lot of experience and seem to only remember the .00005% great photos they took....and try to spin themselves off as that was the norm for them.

Moderator note:

Please note the content above is verging on a personal attack.

Personal attacks are not tolerated here.

Although it does not specifically identify a member, it is a generalized attack on other community members.
