1.
I agree with most of what's been written here, and add my own thought on the matter.
If you need to ask what what kind of lens is missing from your kit, you don't need a new lens yet.
I'm referring to general types of lenses here. Once you know that your lacking, a macro, wide-angle, etc., then getting input from others on which specific model is a good idea.

  2.
I'm not sure it will require a new mount as long as they keep the dimensions and positioning of the sensor pretty much the same. But by my reckoning, an existing flat-field lens will end up producing a field of focus that extends away as you move from the center of the image. It wouldn't render existing lenses useless. It might even make for some interesting images. But I fully expect a line of lenses optimized for the new sensors if these make it to production. It'll be interesting once reviewers get their hands on a camera with one of these.

  3.
Makes me wonder how this would affect the field of focus on lenses designed for flat sensors/film.

  6.
Thanks for taking the time to explain it. I'm still a little baffled by why it threw up the red flag, but in the future I'll just upload the images first to a folder here and link to it. Sorry for the fuss, I just got a little irritated that it wouldn't just let me post my comment with the image pasted into the text box.

  10.
Maybe I'm not understanding this, but what did the image I pasted into the response have to do with the website in question? I don't think I've ever even visited it. I simply went to the folder where the image was located on my hard drive, pressed Ctrl+C to copy it to my clipboard, and went to the response box and pressed Ctrl+V to paste it into the response. I never linked to anything.
It's not really a big deal. I ended up doing pretty much what you describe. I'm just curious what's going on when I try and paste directly into the text editor.

  11.
I was trying to paste this image into a response on this forum question, http://www.photo.net/sports-photography-forum/00ccix

But couldn't due to this problem. I tried pasting the error message text that was blocked on the same grounds. So here's a screen capture.

I'm not sure what pasting an image into a response has to due with that website. But if I removed the image I could post it without problems. So I was forced to download the image to a photo.net folder and link to that. I'm just curious as to why I can't simply paste an image into a response from my clipboard.

  12.
I agree, that 1/500th isn't optimal, neither is my 200-500mm Tamron that I use. But none the less, I've taken plenty of pictures at those settings of people surfing that everyone (non-photo enthusiasts) thought were excellent. Of course they weren't up the standards of a pro photographer. But if your just wanting to get nice images to give to friends, I find that the images need not be publishing quality. I guess my point was, that given the choice between a 400mm f/4 or a 500mm f/5.6 I'd take the later for surf pictures.

Handheld Sony a55 with a Tamron 200-500mm at f/8, ISO 200, 1/500 sec.

  13.
I'm going to call BS on the notion that you should switch to Canon because it's better. The best camera is the one you know how to use, so get more familiar with the camera you have by doing some test shots at different settings and reviewing them on your monitor.
As to which lens, I would say that unless you plan on taking your shots at dawn or dusk, you won't need a really fast lens. Most surfing I've seen generally takes place during sunny weather, so go for a longer lens that doesn't need the tel-converter. In full sun you can still keep you exposure times short. I just checked a picture of a surfer I took at f/8 in full sun at ISO 200 and the exposure time was still 1/500th of a second.
One thing to think about is whether you plan on shooting hand held or with a tripod. I seem to be able to get away with shooting hand held even with my 500mm lens using image stabilization and a fast shutter speed. But If you go with the tripod, you may want to invest in a gimbal-head for smooth panning with a long lens.

  14.
Great images again this week. In particular,
Bill, great lighting for showing off the detail in the katydid.
Rick, I really like the the way the out of focus parts turned out. It almost looks as if a smoothing filter was liberally applied, but I'm guessing it just the way the lens rendered it.
Roberta, yeah the red eyes give it something menacing almost.
And Rodger, Wow, I never would have thought a heron could or would catch a swallow.
As for my contribution, a wild orchid. When I hike through the woods here I often find orchids that have been knocked out of the tree tops by storms or fallen branches with them on the ground. I will generally collect them if they are a type I haven't yet encountered to see what the flowers will look like when they bloom. Well this one was almost dead when I found it, they don't seem to survive the deep shade of the forest floor, And now 2 years later it's finally bloomed for the first time. Most wild orchids have small inconspicuous flowers, not this one though. They look fleshy, almost alien.

Clove-Scented Gongora Orchid (Gongora claviodora)
A stack of 2 images to get the front and back flowers both in focus.
You can click on the image to see a couple other images of it.

  15. Nice capture, but you might want to do some perspective correction to get the trees standing straight. Here's an example to illustrate what I mean.

    Twilight

Well captured! The formation of the birds is what makes this shot special in my opinion. It's rare to capture them in such a nice frame fitting grouping with a nice background.

  18.
Wow, one year already, time flies. Thanks to Laura for making the effort to keep this forum going strong and to all the people who've posted the great images that I look forward to seeing every week.
In my corner of world the rainy season finally started and I'm looking forward to seeing some of the animals that get scarce during the dry season. Found this coral snake a couple weeks ago near my house. While very venomous, they aren't very dangerous due to their timid disposition and small teeth located in the back of a small mouth. None the less, it needed to be relocated before my cat got a hold of it.
