  1. This is the spent stalk of a yucca that flowered 2 years ago here in Punta Colorada Uruguay. It is now leaning at a precarious 45 degrees but has not snapped off even with its 10cm diameter girth and 10m length. It's like waiting for the pitch to drop!
  2. This is the additional weekly image thread for the Nature Forum. While images posted to this thread should still be nature in theme, it may contain a small amount of human-made objects and therefore less restricted than the Monday in Nature threads. Please see this discussion for more details: Alternative weekly thread in Nature forum Each participant please post no more than just one image per weekly thread. For all you fungus fans, this has been growing in my lawn here in Uruguay for the past couple of weeks.
  3. Jordan2240, Tom, Shun and Mary, thanx for sharing your perspectives on 'likes'. My perspective on 'likes' has diverged from yours (subjective badge of merit) over the years. Now, it is that if someone has taken the time to take a photo, post process it and then share it here on Pnet, I like that. The effort made by the poster should not be an empty, unrequited experience IMHO. If you find a photo exceptional or if you have other critiques, you can always reply and state that. I will NOT 'like' a photo according to my personal standards. For example, it contains a gun or some depiction of cruelty. My new-found naivety makes me happy and I hope my 'like' encourages others to continue to share even more of their photos (I think Pnet needs that too). We can all learn something from every photo whether it is about the photography and/or the subject. My ¢¢ from a lousy photographer; but, someone who enjoys looking and learning from at the photos posted here, and who tries to give back by posting my (lousy) photographs, now from Uruguay (I'm Canadian).
  4. Sorry for my ignorance Shun, but who is Bob Atkins? I looked for his profile on PNet and came up with very little. Is he the guy that used to review Canon stuff?
  5. "Again, as far as I am concerned, the purpose for this thread is to promote nature photography and have some fun. It is not my objective, and I am sure it is not Bob Atkins' either, to tightly police every entry. As long as we use common sense, anything reasonable is fine. If we can see some out-of-focus house in the background, it is not going to be an issue. However, I hope people won't post an image of their dog on a leash waking in the park ..." A quote from Shun Cheung in October 2013 on the Monday in Nature POTW thread (one of the first I posted to). So; what has changed?
  6. How about feral dogs (as we have possibly seen already)? Or the wild horses of Sable Island? Or pythons in the FLA everglades? I want to see nature photos and won't get hung up on a few debatable interpretations. How deeply could one be offended by them? That is why the the guideline I suggested states " ‘Likes’, ‘Replies’ and comments from other PNet members will help to guide you for your future posts."
  7. I have seen landscapes in MiN before, and grumbling about a vehicle path in one being a 'hand of man' element.
  8. D Aren't they some of nature's most bizarre creations (the turkeys, that is)?
  9. Thanx JDMvW. Your advice on how to make this thread successful would be appreciated.
  10. For those who may not have noticed, Shun opened a thread were were can post photos that do not fit MiN guidelines. Thanx Shun. Nature Forum's Other Weekly Image Thread, January 26, 2018
  11. A Rufous Bellied Thrush..... on a roof near us. Very similar in size to an American Robin but not nearly as loud and without the dirty nest building habits.
  12. "If you open the door to humanity in this new weekly thread, open it." I strongly disagree. This is a nature forum and the focus needs to be nature, not humans.
  13. I didn't know that I missed crows and ravens until I saw this.
  14. Please, Please, Please submit a suggested revision rather than a critique. I thought I addressed your concerns by saying "‘Likes’, ‘Replies’ and comments from other PNet members will help to guide you for your future posts.". I don't want any individual(s) to be the gatekeeper of the thread.
  15. Here’s another potential name “Witness Nature, Share Nature on Fridays” May I suggest the guidelines as being: “The focus of your submission must be nature. If humans or structures are visible, that’s OK; but, it is the natural element of your photo that must be the prominent . ‘Likes’, ‘Replies’ and comments from other PNet members will help to guide you for your future posts. Another thread to post your nature photographs is Monday in Nature (MiN) and these are the guidelines https://www.photo.net/discuss/threads/monday-in-nature-guildelines.5502134/”
  16. Thanx Laura. It might be second nature to you, but it isn't to me. I have to work at it. If it ends up being "Second Nature", I can easily live with that. I like your suggestion of "The Other Nature Thread" (TONT) ;-}
  17. Hardly. I think that photography is something we are all trying to improve and may do differently each time in that quest. Something that is second nature to an individual (to me) refers to a behaviour that someone does repeatedly without really thinking much about it. I may decide to do all macro photos for a while then nothing but birds. That would not be second nature IMHO. Also, the name may imply that behaviour of the subject is involved. That's not going to happen with a rock formation, is it? I do like the name; but...
  18. I would like Second Nature too except it refers to behaviour rather than the natural world.
  19. The Natural World (TNW) The World Naturally (TWN) Us and Nature (UaN) Nature with a Touch of Man (NwaToM) Do pictures of the Moon or the Milky Way fit? I would think so even if there is another place on PNet for them. Still like 1 per week on Friday
  20. Hi YardKat. There's something funky going on with PNet and yours and Heimbrant's photos. I tried to like them, but it doesn't work. So you photo may be liked by amny, but none show up. Love the Corgi model. We've got 2 real ones.
  21. For those who suffered the Colorado low Monday and Tuesday, here is a shot of San Francisco Beach here in Uruguay to warm you up. It is high tourist season here and many of the people on this beach were probably from Argentina. The beach is about 2km long and it was like this the entire length. The coast of Uruguay is lined by beaches like this. D7100 Sigma 150-500mm @500mm 1/400th f10
  22. I would definitely post in such a forum. Since I live UTC -3, I may initiate it periodically, like Sally and Frank have done with MiN. How does the group feel about posts of the same photo in both forums? When I see the same photo in MiN and then again in Nikon Wed, I wonder why. It doesn't happen often. There would be a high potential between the MiN forum and the proposed forum. Perhaps any guidelines could state one or the other, if it matters.
