Art Hill
Pasgagula (sp),Alabama
He had a local portrate and commercial Photo business.
He retired to Fort Myers, Florida and worked part time at the Fort Myers News-Press.
I learned a lot from him. He was a master!

I have a Canon 350D.
I never use automatic. I use priority. That way I can use the flash when I want, not when the camera wants.
I use manual with my non Canon lenses.
My pocket camera is a Canon PowerShot A1100IS. One of the last P&S cameras with a viewfinder.

-

I get the same response when I carry eather my WideLux or Stereo Graphic cameras.

-

Before the dot com crash, the EFS10-SF interchangable back was advertised.
If anyone is interested, I have a pdf file of the unit.
Email me and I will send you a copy

My first camera that was the most memorable was an Exakta iia.
I bought it in Germany on the local economy.
I still have it and it is still used.
I have other cameras but the Exakta line still stands out.
It was an industrial quality camera that stands out above the rest.

I'm with you Steve.
That's why I use a 60 year old film camera for full frame.
I buy only what I can afford.
The manufacturers will charge as much as some fool will pay.
Why would someone buy a 18 or 24 megapixel camera to get a 6 X 4 inch print?
Bragging rights!

-

If you can find one I use a Canon PowerShot a1100IS.

12.1 megapixels and fits in the palm of your hand.

I have a Stereo Graphic by Graflex 35mm camera.
I have the negitives developed. I then scan them in and print them into a mask that fits into a turn of the last century Stereo viewer.
I have collected a large number of the old cards. The new cards are an added novelty.

Once you get the film threaded and advance for the first shot, rewind the film knob until there is tention on the film.

The film should advance properly. Watch the rewind knob to see if it moves when you advance the film.

My pocket camera has a viewfinder besides the LCD display.

I was lucky to buy it before the camers companies dumped the viewfinders.

All my Dslr and film cameras have eye level views.

I have waist level finders for my Exaktas and right angle assessories for the Dslrs.

The arms length cameras do not work in bright sunlight.

-

I use Novoflex 1923 bellows with a Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar 1:4.5/105 short mount lens for macro shots with my Canon dslr camera.

There isn't any adaptors that will allow you to use the automatic Exakta mount lenses.

-

A reference that I use is Exakta cameras 1933-1978 by Clement Aguila and Michel Rouah.

I found my copy on eBay.

Lots of information!

This a response to where NOT to send your Exakta.

I sent my VXiia to International Camera in Chicago, Il.

He installed new curtains and a clean and adjustment.

When I got it back, the slow speed dial did not work.

I sent it back and it was returned in the same condition as I sent it.

I repaired it myself. The cam was installed backwards.

In the repair manual it states to be carfull to install the cam corectly as it can be installed backwards.

Basically all the photographs are technically good.

None are exceptonial

What you must ask is "What message are you trying to convay?"

Whether it is a snapshot or a studio setup, without the message understood it is a failure.

A few of my lenses for various cameras turning a lens ring clockwise

Focus: infinity to near. Schneider Kreuzach, Meyer-Gorlitz Telemegor 5.5/400, Westrogon, Rodenstock-Eurygon

Focus: near to infinity: Meyer-Gorlitz Oreston 1.8:50, Exakta 75-300mm zoom 4:4.5-5.6 (zoom push-pull)

I really hadn’t thought about it until I read this post.
As an aside, my Exaktas VX, VXiia, 2b, VX 500, and VX1000 are all left handed cameras.
My Exakta TTL and RTL 100 can be used either right or left.
My Canons and Minoltas are right handed.

As an added note: We used D76 straight because of the time element in the newspaper business.
We used TriX 400 so quality wasn't priority.

D76 1:1 is prefered as a 1 shot delevoper.

Hi Andrew

Any help I can give you I will be glad to.

I retired from the News-Press a while ago.

I started as a news Photog in 1960.

I moved from News photo to prepress when I saw where the money was.

Start with the "bathroom darkroom."

It is necessary to have running water.

I did just monocrome photography at home.

If you do b/w you will need D76, Decktol, fixer and stop bath.

Definately you will need a Quality Enlarger.

If you are going to process glossey prints, you will need a set of ferotype plates and squeagy (sp).

Any other tips I can give you I 'll be glad to pass on.

I still have a few books on the subject.

Email me and maybe we can get together.

BTW I enjoy your nature pictures in the News-Press.

The camera on my phone is useless.

Low resolution and it is a pain to get the photos off.

I carry a pocket camera for those grab shots and it is 12 mp.

The easiest way to check for pinholes is to remove the lens and open the back.
Shine a flashlight into the front. You will see if there is any holes in the lead curtain.
Cock the shutter. The mirror will be in the way, but enough light will go anound to see if there are holes in the following curtain.
Good luck. Hope they aren't any.

Shoot in Auto or Program Mode
in Casual Photo Conversations
Posted

I am a Canon user.
I use the program mode in the factory default mode.
It is pretty close to the auto mode with out the flash.
For just general shooting I use program because it is my choice to use the flash when I need it.
Not when the camera wants to.
