If raw sharpness f1.4 - f2.0 at close focus distance was my only criterion than I would have kept the Canon

Ok, so you would have kept Canon too. That means that you know about Zeiss being soft at close distances. Sorry I removed those crops some time ago and don't have them any more.

I've never used Sigma before. Can you explain what this issue with AF everybody is talking about?

-

I was using live view and was aware of the focus shift. So that was not the cause. I posted 100% crops on fredmiranda and users reconfirmed that it is normal behavior for 85mm ZE.

-

Well, that's what I thought. But check out threads on FM and POTN regarding this lens. If indeed it is as good as people report that can be a real blow to 85L. I own 85L and it is my favorite lens, but at half the price I definitely want to check out Sigma. This could be a real killer not just for 85L but to 85 f/1.8 as well.

From what I have seen around the internet Sigma 85mm f/1.4 looks very promising. It could be a real competitor to Canon 85mm f/1.2 II. I just ordered a copy from B&H. Lets see how that works out. Does anybody else have experience with it? Do you like it? Feel free to post examples.

There is no doubt that Zeiss makes superb glass but from what I've tried 85mm impressed me the least. I just think a lens should perform satisfactory at all distances, not only at infinity. My personal favorites are 50MP, 100MP and 21 Distagon (I own 50MP and 21mm).

-

Well, I wish I could say the same. I bought 85mm ZE but found that it is excessively soft when shooting objects closer than 20 feet. It was superb at infinity but unfortunately I shoot not only at infinity so this was not a lens for me. For my needs as of today I did not find a better overall 85mm lens than 1.2 Mark II.

MF is a niche? Why don't you go back a bit and learn history of photography and maybe you will also be able to learn that MF lenses were around much longer than AF and that all famous photographers have used MF lenses to create works of art in every area (including sports, wildlife, etc). So the only conclusion I can make here is that you probably suck at using MF lenses. I don't see other reason why would you open your mouth and start pushing your onions on others when somebody recommends a MF lens. And your idea that I am a "Zeissphille" is a dumb one too. I objectively look at things and if I don't like it I am not afraid of saying it. I bought 85mm f/1.4 ZE and I did not like it. That fact hardly make me a Zeissphille. I currently own 6 lenses and 2 of them Zeiss: 50mm MP and 21mm Distagon; 1 Voigtlander and 3 Canons. I enjoy using MF lenses and took great number of portraits (this is what I do most of the time), wildlife and my kids sports, including using Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 wide open (when I had it).

-

LOL, I am ready to reed a few "smart ass" posts how Zeiss is bad and MF sucks. Why don't you two educate us all. I am dying to hear your idiotic arguments.

There simply isn't a better 50mm lens IMO than Zeiss 50mm f/2 Makro Planar. Tack sharp at every aperture with superb contrast and color rendition. But it is a manual focus lens so it's not for everybody. If you want to learn more about how "good" Canon 50mm f/1.4 is click here. It's a clear "winner".

Ilya E and Matt Laur, I cannot make out if you are responding to my post.

Sorry, that was meant for the OP.

Can you provide more information? Do you have a link?

IS not a must but is helpful, especially when shooting handheld. I mostly shoot video with my 24-70 f/2.8, which does not have an IS, and I have no issues. I use Zacuto Z-Finder which also helps reducing camera shake.

This firmware update (Version 2.0.8) incorporates the following changes and fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which movies are not taken at the shooting mode registered in the user's settings if a shooting mode Aperture priority (or Shutter priority) is registered in any of the camera's user settings (C1, C2, C3) and the user attempts to shoot a movie.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the shutter will not release when pressing the shutter button when the auto power off function is set to "on".

Fixes a phenomenon in which overexposure occurs when shooting a Live View shooting simulation with the ISO speed set to L.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the settings of the Speedlite transmitter ST-E2 revert to the default settings when both the camera and the ST-E2 are set to auto power off.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the Macro Ring Lite (MR-14EX, MT-24EX) and slave flash do not sync while shooting wirelessly.

The Version 2.0.8 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 2.0.7. If the camera's firmware is already Version 2.0.8, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Well, I was describing my own experiences and not what others post. So it was an actual problem. I don't use UV filters on my lenses all the time so it picked up dust after each use. During the time I owned the lens I had to clean it 4 or 5 times (the cleaning was done by myself). But I've read that UV filter helps so if you are one of those people using UV filters all the time you might not have this issue. The only reason why OP should upgrade to 17-55 is if he/she needs that extra 15mm of reach and 1 stop of light. IQ of both lenses is very comparable. If OP needs a good build, then 17-55 is not for him/her.

-

The IQ of 17-55 lens is great but its build for a lack of a better word SUCKS. As soon as you take it in your hands it starts squeaking as it is about to break and, what's worse, it collects dust as a vacuum cleaner. If you are not happy with your 17-40 then it might be a good idea to buy 17-55, otherwise stay with 17-40.

I don't know what kind of hockey (professional, kids games, etc) but I have been shooting my kids practice using 1D Mark II and 70-200mm f/4 IS. I find that I don't need particularly fast lenses because ice reflects light pretty good so I am able to reach fast shutter speeds.

29m59m for SD shooting. HD takes a lot more and limit is at 12 minutes/4GB per clip. Does not matter if you have 32GB card, you will have to click the button every 12 minutes.
Nice link JC, thanks

-

If you will be shooting in 1080p then max clip length is about 12 minutes/4GB. That applies to both 7D and 5DII. Also, note that 7D tends to get really warm after prolong video shooting. Even after 1 continuous clip of 12 minutes you will feel that it is much warmer. If you are planning to shoot unattended I suggest you reconsider. Overheating is never good and if you are not there to check on the camera it can do some damage.

you can only get 2 hours of high def movies on , 8 gig memroy stick

Where did you find that information? I know that 12 minutes of HD video on 5DII and 7D takes 4GB and I don't think 60D will be any different in that regard. If OP will be shooting in RAW plus HD video, then I think 16GB card is the way to go.

Then maybe you should try Canon 70-300mm and 1.4 extender. Lens you can get for around $400 and extender for $200-$250 (I am talking used). You will have a reach of 672mm (300*1.4*1.6). That IMO is more than sufficient for wildlife. And 70-300 is an IS lens. I would not recommend the old 2x extender but new one coming out soon and it's supposed to be very good. In that case you will have reach of 960mm. When your budget increases you can always sell 70-300 and not lose much, if anything, and get 100-400L. But still, if you are serious about wildlife/action you need 45 point AF and faster FPS rates. I am not even talking about bigger sensor of 1D series.
