  1. Just when I thought Timmy couldn't get any more derogatory, he now refers to the man in Alfs image as a carnival sideshow freak lol ..... I find it hard to believe that after every comment, every explanation, you still don't get it Timmy! You profess to be an intelligent man with talent, again, I find that hard to believe.... Timmy.... grab a dictionary and look up the word FICTION then perhaps you can finally grasp the concept of Alfs excellent POTW image :) You made the very grave mistake of jumping in with both feet and taking the moral high ground over the wrong doing of this man..... which, in actual fact you know nothing of this mans character whatsoever.....like us all!! Hopefully now you have finally grasped it and can appreciate the image for what it is and move on :)

  2. I have followed this debate with great interest, however, in my opinion ( to which everyone is entitled to :) ) I think this is an excellent image with an equally excellent title, simply because, when Alf first posted this image on PN for a Halloween competition, I immediately made a connection between the image, the title, and a game I used to play a lot on the Play station, called Resident Evil, to me the guy in this image reminds me of the walking dead characters in the video game.

When Alf initially posted this image back in October 2013 his synopsis attached to the image said... "The poor guy looked like he had been in a road accident, the mark on his head was an open wound ... but.... he did look a bit spooky" ...... perfect for a Halloween subject!

I do feel that if some of the people commenting here had gone back to the original posting, read the synopsis and the critiques that followed, then (albeit a pity) this debate wouldn't be as intense and on going as it currently is.

Personally I see the image for what it is, which is, an aesthetically outstanding image. Alf has captured and created the perfect mood , with seemingly no intent whatsoever to cast aspersions on the individual in the photograph.

The image, like the title, is subjective and open to interpretation, we all see, think, feel differently and that's a great thing, however, I think in this discussion some people have lost sight as to exactly what Alf was attempting ( or IMO succeeded ) to do when posting this image and giving it a title. Alf himself has stated the title came to him from a film and , the film being Resident Evil, which incidentally is based on the video game Resident Evil.

Notwithstanding Alf's reluctance to approach the subject for the very valid reasons he has stated. Although it's possible I don't it's very think likely, that having taken the photo Alf was instantly inspired to name the image there and then or even 5 minutes after taking the shot, so to infer that any kind of permission should have been sought from the subject would not be logical.

Anyway, just thought I'd put my "two penneth" worth in and close with these words.... Alf....as always, a visually superb image, LOVE the title ... keep them coming :)

  3. Hi Alf

I really love the B & W tones... The composition is most unusual and therefore most compelling...but the moody atmosphere that is accentuated by the mist is the key to this wonderful image.  The combination of sharp foreground detail that puts the viewer right on the spot and the aura of mystery that lays ahead is like an adventure waiting to happen!  Beautifully done Alf!  Thanks for sharing :)

    warmest regards

  4. Hi Alf

WOW!  Well you certainly succeeded with this image!  Viewed large it is absolutely outstanding!

I love the perspective of this composition, it is just sublime, and what an appropriate title you have given it.  The clarity and detail are just breath taking Alf ..... another one for my favorites...... excellent work Alf!

    Thank you for sharing :)

    Sincere compliments and warm regards

  5. Hi Alf

This image really grabbed my attention, even more so when viewed large!!

I know there is a technical side to photography, however, what matters most is what pleases my eyes.....and this stunningly detailed composed image certainly does that!!

So if I'm merely a "picture viewer" that some would observe that the vast majority of viewers are here.... I would have to say this.... I prefer to look at a wonderfully pleasing image like this one, that evokes emotions within me, with whatever lens, settings etc that may have been used, than one that is boring, out of focus that could have been composed by a chimp, that has all the so called "technical" boxes ticked.

I know what one I would want to hang on my wall too! ...... Absolutely stunning image Alf..... Keep them coming :)

    Warmest regards

    Hi Michael

What a wonderful, calm soothing scene this is.  I really like the sky and the reflection on the water

    Nice work Michael :)

  6. Hi Alf

    What a striking image!

I love the story and although it has no actual connection to the tree, your creative writing skill and photographic talent captivate my imagination to the point I can visualise Mary Bateman stood beneath the tree on the rocks, her arms stretched upward,  reaching towards the sky..... her boney fingers moving to the rythm of her incantations, causing sparks to fly from the tips of the branches creating those cloud formations......

I so admire your talent for capturing such visually stunning images that evoke such emotion and grasp the imagination

Excellent work Alf.... thank you for sharing :)

    Warmest regards

  7. Hi Alf

Wow! This image has to be viewed large to fully appreciate its captivating beauty.

I love the soft warm golden tones of the sky, reflecting perfectly in the sand and  those undulations in the sand  give a tactile feel to the image, the curve in the beach makes this a stunningly composed piece of art!

Whilst I am a fan of B & W images, I have to disagree with Yannis on this one as I feel the B & W conversion doesn't work with this particular image, in B & W it loses its "warm" feel....to me, those beautiful golden tones make this image what it is..... another one to add to my favorites :)

Very well done Alf and thank you for sharing :)

    Wuthering Heights

          38

    Hi Alf

Firstly I must congratulate you on getting "Image of the Day" and what a superb image it is too, particularly when viewed large!

The single most thing I love about your images is your ability to capture the scene so remarkably well, that the viewer is drawn in.

I love the title too, It conjures up visions of Heathcliff and Cathy sat under the solitary tree on "Wuthering Heights" the wind howling across the open expanse of land.

I absolutely love everything about this image, it is extremely well composed and aesthetically pleasing.

As a learning photographer I should maybe care for the technical side, however, the technical side is irrelevant when I cast my eyes over such a visually stunning image!

Well done Alf and thanks for sharing :)

     Warmest regards

     Jacqueline

  8. Hi Alf

Another breathtaking composition of complete and utter serenity and beauty Alf!.

You have such a raw talent for capturing such enticing images, that draw the viewer into the striking artistry of the scene, evoking emotions and memories, thoughts and feelings.

I love everything about this image, from the foggy/misty veil, the soft subtle reflection, to the solitary fisherman in his boat.  The soft hued colours create an air of peace and calm.....

I think aesthetics are paramount in photography and this image ticks every box aesthetically.

This is going in my favorites!  Superb work Alf and thank you for sharing :)

    Hi Scott

I'm glad you like this one... I personally didn't think of taking my Grandson out of the image, ( I have Alf Bailey to thank for his creative mind ) but I also like it, and on refection I totally agree with your thoughts that the  boy could be seen as a distraction.

I will crank up the contrast and re-post here...... just out of curiosity :) and out of that same curiosity I will visit your portfolio :)

Thank you for your visit and your positive feedback,  it is appreciated.

    Warm regards

  10. Hi Alf

It doesn't surprise me at all that the magazine chose this image as photo of the day, I'd have chosen it as photo of the year.... it's a little Gem!

I love your play on words with the title...genius!....and as for the image, it is simply stunning!.

The composition is spot on, as always, the clarity and crispness of the image emanates a wintry  atmosphere, I felt quite a chill whilst viewing it!........

I didn't read the preceding critiques, but I certainly had to scroll way down the page to offer mine...a sure sign of a well received image and a very popular photographer :)

Excellent work Alf.... I hope you find more like this image in your archives and share them :)

Warmest regards and sincere compliments Alf
