  1. Hi Alf

Wow!  I absolutely love this image, the soft subtle colour tones.  The silhouette of the trees reflecting in the water... this is a scene of sheer unadulterated beauty .  I can see myself relaxing on my sofa and gazing into this image as it hangs proudly on my wall!

Excellent work Alf, as usual..... Thank you for sharing :)

    Warmest regards

  2. Hi Alf

I dared....and wow!....another exceptional street shot.  You have captured the mood, atmosphere and drama of this scene completely.  This gentleman looks like he'd be right at home in a sinister horror movie....very apt for the halloween season.

This is a very thought provoking image, I can clearly see by his attire that he isn't a homeless person, but the wound on his head, the dark troubled look about his eyes, the crutch, all lead me to believe he's certainly been in the wars.

I absolutely love your work, in particular your Black and White images, and this image goes to prove Landscapes are not all you excel at Alf.

Admirable work Alf...thank you for sharing.

    Warmest regards

  3. Hi Alf

WOW!.... The sharpness,  detail and clarity in this image is tangible.

I viewed "Down to Earth" to make a comparison and this one is my preferred choice,  and thanks to the extensive photography knowledge you have shared with me I am now able to understand the technical side more,  so I would agree with you that F5.6 was definitely the correct choice.

Now, enough of the techy stuff...I'm going to get to what's far more important to me....aesthetics.....and wow this is an extremely aesthetically pleasing image Alf......sheer beauty,  perfectly composed (with the aid of the trusty tripod :) )

My eyes were drawn into the image...along the slate wall to that resplendent skyline.  I love the way your images give the viewer the perception of being able to "step into" the scene and take in the stunning view and solitude of the surroundings.

Absolutely striking image viewed large Alf.... my sincere compliments to you for sharing yet another awe inspiring picture.

    warmest regards

    Alf

Thank you!  I just "viewed large" myself and you're right, it does look better.  I shall have to remember to include "view large" on future posts.

I have very recently started shooting in RAW and processing my images and I  have to say, although it's very time consuming,  I am loving the quality of the end result :)

I'm really pleased you like this image, particularly the light vignetting.... I was "wowed" by all the different processing techniques in Lightroom.

Thanks again for your very kind words Alf, coming from such an acclaimed photograper as yourself I am truly humbled.

    Warmest regards

Hi!..... Well what can I say to add to what's already been said!?.....

I could reiterate what others have said about the composition, the colours, the sheer depth of beauty of the scene......

However, what I will do is give you my own "take" on this absolutely breathtaking image....

I clicked on (click for larger view) and was immediately blown away by the immense depth of clarity and allurement of the scenery, my eyes taking in every millimetre of this striking landscape!

I have recently purchased a Nikon D90 and have been severely bitten by the photography bug, and you my friend are an inspiration to all photographers out there!

You create such visually stunning images and this one is no exception.

I've yet to learn all the "techy" stuff but I dont need to know anything to appreciate this image.....from the moment I viewed large I was drawn into the scene....taking long rambling walks up the mountain side..... (with my trusty D90 of course lol) breathing in the fresh clean mountain air....hearing nothing but the sound of nature, the water and my heart beat....then a slow pleasurable walk back to my house nestled perfectly amongst those trees...simply idyllic....ahhhhh....back to reality <sigh>...

Excellent work Alf and thank you so much for sharing and fueling my thirst for photography :)

    warmest regards

    Hi Sandeep

I find this image very aesthically pleasing, I love the soft warm colour tones of the sky and the bird in flight "coming home" completes this fine image. Compliments :)

  5. Hi Alf

WOW! I viewed large and what an astounding image this is..... what else can I add to the many compliments received already.... except for, this is joining your other fine images in my favorites folder :) ..... Beautiful scene, stunning composition.... superb work Alf.... very well done!

  6. Hi Alf

WOW! ... I clicked on view large and this image sprung to life!..... The detail in this image is breathtaking, I actually felt I could reach out and touch this beautiful creature.... I think its very apparent, that not only are you at one with your camera, you are also at one with nature.  An exquisitely, gracefully and entrancingly composed image Alf, very well done indeed!  Another for my favorites!  Thank you for sharing!

    warm regards

  7. Hi Alf

I love the quirkiness of this image and the poem that accompanies it!  Your capture of this fine old bicycle evokes memories, thoughts and feelings from bygone days when this mode of transport was ridden carefree and joyously, without all the safety gear required these days!   A superbly composed image which really works for me in B & W!  Thank you for sharing Alf.

    warm regards

  8. Hi Alf

Firstly, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations for winning the "Earth" competition on PN.  Although I didn't critique the image initially, I did vote for this image so I feel compelled to now as I am astonished and quite frankly disgusted at the above posts from those few members who have clearly been sucking on sour grapes!!  I  take umbrage at being called blind by, ironically, "Blind ta" who is clearly blind or he would have seen all the previous very complimentary critiques on this image!  It appears that the above "sour grapes" comments have been made by members who haven't even entered the competition....so...why these members cannot accept defeat graciously instead of writing such negative and false comments is a mystery to me.....and did they write similar comments to the runner up?.... Alf, it is very apparent that you are a very well liked, respected and extremely talented member of PN.  Once again Alf my compliments on a beautiful image and a well deserved win... Well done!!

    Warm regards

    Hi Alf

Well, you certainly thought right, the image does have potential, even more so when blended with the black & white version, I'm pleased you hit a couple of keys and the result was this very aesthetically palatable image!  Reflections are a personal favorite of mine and this exquisitely composed image (albeit by hitting unknown keys) will be going into my favorites.  I love the clarity and sharpness of every detail, the array of colours in the buildings and reflection against the black & white moodiness of the sky and clouds.  I actually found myself leaning into this image, trying to see further round!  Sheer beauty Alf, thank you for sharing!

    Warm regards

  9. Hi Alf

Wow!.... I love the soft colour tones of this superbly composed image,  it emanates peace and tranquility!  -7.5!! ...... you do go to some extraordinary lengths to get these impressively striking images Alf and I'm so glad you do, as the results are so worth it!  When viewed large this image is even more spectacular...... I sat and gazed at this for ages.....imagining I was a stowaway under the canvas of that boat... my heart beat echoing the ebb and flow of the water and only the sounds of nature....Bliss!!.... Excellent work Alf..... another one to add to my favorites... my sincere compliments!

    Warm regards

  10. Hi Alf

I can see the attraction for returning to this beautiful place, through your eyes Buttermere has become one of my favorite places too, which I hope to visit one day!  This image (especially viewed large) is simply sublime!  A stunningly composed scene Alf.... The fog creating such atmosphere, the serene location reflected perfectly in the lake....... This one has gone into my favorites.... Thanks for sharing Alf!

p.s. I agree with Dimitris, your images should be seen more widely and images like this one would win IMO... Excellent work Alf

  11. Hi Alf

Wow!... I love this image....viewed large it really comes into its own!.... The composition is spot on..... The foggy atmosphere...the reflections of the stark trees on the still water....the rolling hills just visible through the fog creating such ambience...... Breathaking image !!.... Very well done Alf!.......

I don't want to appear rude but I'm finding myself disagreeing with Jamie again ( as I'm sure others are too ) ....... I am beginning to doubt his eyesight lol..... and his technical and photographic ability to be making the comments that he has (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong Jamie :) ) ...... especially after viewing his images..... IMO there is no comparison ....  but....that is just my opinion :) .... another saying springs to mind...if you have nothing nice to say...then say nothing :)

Keep them coming Alf...... superb images!

    warmest regards

  12. Hi Alf

As a rule I do not generally read the critiques before posting my own, however, on this occasion I did..... When viewed large this image is a vision to behold and the title "Lost" is befitting, as I got totally lost in this visually stunning image......and the answer to your question....."Is there enough detail to hold your attention"?....is a very definitive YES!...... the expression "less is more" springs to mind....  I have to disagree with Jamie, it neither needs to be hazier or brighter, for me and 99.9% of the other critiques the image is simply paradisaical!!.... Maybe Jamie is seeing something the rest of us aren't?... Or maybe he is an Alien and doesn't live in our world :) ..... Admirable and incomparable work Alf!!

    warmest regards

  13. Hi Alf

Your images continue to amaze and impress me!  This one, when viewed large is an absolute visual delight!... The fogginess adds an aspect of mystery, solitude and serenity to this beautiful place.  The reflection on the calm water enhances the atmosphere you so cleverly create and the "styx" frame the boathouse perfectly!..... Excellent work Alf!

    Warm regards

  14. Hi Alf

WOW!..... I didn't think I could be anymore impressed with this image, until I viewed large.... This is an amazing image Alf..... I love the soft tones, the atmosphere the fog effect creates, the soft reflections are just right.... I got completely lost in this one Alf...... your new camera along with your superb ability as a photographer have worked perfectly together to create this stunning image.... Excellent Alf!

    Warm regards

  15. Hi Alf

Firstly, I'm pleased to hear you are well again... Both images are stunning but this one has the edge for me...

When viewed large this image has the "wow" factor for me... I can almost feel the crisp cold air... I love the clarity of the water and the consequent reflection. .. Alf, not  only do you take a stunning photograph you never fail to capture the atmosphere of your surroundings. ... You just keep getting better and better. . Excellent work Alf

    Warm regards

  16. Hi Alf

This is a personal favorite of mine (especially viewed large) ...... I don't profess to know anything about the technical side to producing such an exquisitely composed image, but it's clearly apparent you do..... I love the "old" feel and look you have given this image....full of atmosphere.... Your ability to grab the viewers eyes, hold them, then draw them in is astounding.  As my eyes dance over the image, soaking up the ambiance, my mind is wondering.... Why is she alone?..... Is she waiting for someone.....maybe a friend?.... a lover?..... or no one at all...?..... And that's the beauty of your images.... They inspire thoughts and evoke emotions..... Superb work Alf!

    warm regards
