You might want to look at Magic Lantern software for the 7D. Just Google "Magic lantern".

-

I would strongly suggest the following book.."The DV Rebel's Guide"... it's available on Amazon.

-

A reasonably priced shotgun is the Rode Videomic.

It may make absolutely no difference to you, but batteries other than Canon do not show the information in the menu screen when you check them (which I never do anyway)... but it would tell you which specific battery you are using... important if you think one is going bad. Of course you could mark the batteries...

You need to check your camera manual if you use the D7000. My 5D Mkii will only record for about 12 minutes before shutting off recording. It will put two such recordings on one 8 Gb card. The cards also have to be fast, but you probably already know that.
The idea of turning the camera on and letting it run for an extended period of time will not work if your camera operates the same way.
With regard to heating, I have restarted my Canon immediately after it stops several times to continue recording without any overheating problems.
I use Toast Titanium for making DVD's. You can download trials of most of the programs mentioned to see which one suits your needs best.
Maybe you're already aware of these things, but I'd hate to see you count on something that won't get you what you need for a job...
ADD: I just took a look at the D7000 manual. If I'm reading it right it will stop after 4Gb or 20 minutes of recording. It may stop sooner however if the card write speed is slower. I'd suggest a trial run to see what you can get out of the cards you are using...

Cool...thanks Patrick...

If you want a commercial program that is easy to use look at "Toast"...
here's the link...
If you use Firefox there are several add-ons that do conversions that are free...

I use a MacBook Pro with an external Cinema display.
I actually like that better than my iMac, and have been very pleased with the combination.
If you're not going to buy a Power Mac I'd go with the largest laptop I could afford...with extra memory... and a plan to add an external monitor when possible.
Even though you say you don't plan to move the machine that much it is a very handy feature to be able to do so...

Your mention that the problem occurs with two different cameras would seem to point to a computer problem.
If you can you should try your vids on a faster machine (by faster I mean something with a Firewire 800 scratch disk, lots of RAM, fast video card with memory, etc.)
Your problem isn't the camera...it's the computer trying to keep up with 1080 vid.

lynda.com probably has the most,
creativecow.com also has several classes.
A google search will also turn up several free AE tutorials....

I use the Rode Videomic directly into the 5D Mkii for recording indoors. Its a great mic, but any serious sound work probably needs to be done externally and synced later.
The 5D Mkii firmware update made some great improvements (i.e. manual volume control, AGC off, etc...), but I still get a fair amount of external noise. I suspect you also have those controls on your 7D.
The Rode Videomic is also pretty directional...making it great if you're pointing in the right direction... :-)

Well Ashley...
I've had to face a similar problem.
I was asked to photograph a wedding 'in the nude' and refused until I was finally wrangled into it...
I did put in my contract that I got to keep my socks on... my feet get really cold!

Hey Patrick...
Could your girlfriend store my files as well?
(-:

-

Sorry to hear it Michael...hopefully the problem will be fixed soon...I miss the software!

-

You're very welcome Margaret.

-

[Note to forum admin.... Thanks!]

-

Beats me Michael. It may have something to do with allocation of memory or the amount of physical memory in the machine. In any case I've had problems since the software came out...so perhaps now a real solution can be found for those of us having problems.

Here is a copy of an email I received after numerous attempts to correct my troubles with Nik software and CS5 in 64 bit mode:

"It has recently come to our attention that on some Mac systems, there may be a memory issue with some of our products operating in Photoshop CS5 64-bit. Our engineering team is diligently looking into this issue. Should an update become available, all registered users will be contacted by email.

To temporary work around the issue, for now there are a couple things that are recommend. One option would be to use the plug-ins in Photoshop as normal, however when the plug-in begins to behave slowly, save the file and restart Photoshop. The other option would be to use the Plug-Ins in Photoshop CS5 32-bit mode. "

Obviously they could use a little help with grammar as welll....

Nik has now (FINALLY!) admitted their new 64 bit software has a problem in CS5 if you are using a Mac. If you are using the 64 bit Nik software on a Mac I would wait about installing it until they fix the problem. You can run CS5 in 32-bit mode to avoid the problem, but if you're not that familiar with how to do such things it might be better to wait.....
Otherwise just uninstall the program and then reinstall it after CS5 is in place...it should show up....

I use the MacBook Pro and an iMac. With a Cinema display the laptop is fine for my work...

Patrick,
What a great idea!
I'll sign up to give one gift subscription...just send me the winner's name.
I always enjoy your comments and your work...

As I stated...no 32 bit filters installed...
As for support... sad to say the least...
I've satisfied myself this is a problem with the software and not my equipment...

-

Thanks Andrew but I've already trashed preferences twice.
By the way... just tried the same procedure on my MacBook Pro (Leopard and CS5)... same result... photo rotated but not cropped in Color Efex, but it didn't freeze the laptop as it did the iMac.
Obviously a Nik glitch...

-

If you're running CS5 on a Mac with Leopard and have Nik 64 bit filters please try this...
Open a photo from bridge as a smart object, rotate it a few degrees, crop it, then open Color Efex Pro and tell me if it works...
Every time I do so the filter freezes and shows the photo rotated but not cropped.
I also am having problems with Viveza2 freezing when applied to photos opened as smart objects.
Nik is no help...3 emails and we're still trying to understand that I'm using CS5 and not Apertures...
What a disappointment...never had any problems with the 32 bit software.
And please... no comments about uninstalling, re-installing, etc... I've done that until I'm sick of it...
(And I have no 32 bit programs installed now...)
Help me find out if it's the filter or my set-up?
Thanks...

Does Camcorder design need a rethink?

It's swell to voice your opinion regarding this issue, but I would suggest doing it in an article format if you want to put forth only your perspective. Asking it in the form of a question will always result in differing opinions, many of which are just as legitimate as anyone else's.
Why ask for opinions then 'correct' most of what someone else says?
Statements like 'far superior' and 'proper' are just inflammatory to a lot of people.
