for a photographer to be an artist, the photographer must wear a beret.

as robert e lee said, more or less: its a good thing war is so horrible or we might like it too much

if you want grain from film: push tri-x to 800 or 1600, develop in straight dektol, 5 min @ 68 d--lots of very nice grain.

my insurance co wanted a premium of 10%/year of the declared value of the cameras. i said--adios muchachos.

deuce & 1/4 is all i shoot. really like those 2.25" negs, especially b&w.

watch out kid--those chain straps will cut your neck off after a few hours--might as well use a coat hanger.

one could get about 42 oz's of gold, or 3000 oz's of silver, or about 20 nano's ( the peoples car of india)--think i would go with the gold

i had a leica llla, m3, and a m2 along with a nikon sp and s3. could never really get the hang of using rangefinders--always felt more comfortable with slr's.

have not looked at camera prices in quite a while cause i dont need any new stuff. last nite i was on amazon and there was a pic of the leica m9--i clicked on it and saw that i could drop a $10000 bill on it and a lens. after crp was administered, i looked again to confirm the price. yup-10 gs. for 10 g i could get a new refridge, stove, washer, dryer, microwave, big screen hd tv, surround sound system, an ipod, iphone, and have some money left for pizza and sam adams. somehow, when i compare the pile of stuff i bought with the m9 and lens--the scales of equality just dont balance.

here is what i do missy: put the h'blad on a leitz tilt-all tripod, stop down 2 or 3, pre-release mirror, use cable release to trip shutter, and of course, focus. get some pretty sharp pictures.

"i have developed a somewhat strange and un-natural attachment to my lenses," richard said leeringly.

sorry--i cannot work up any sympathy for some one who has squandered money like she has--three ny townhouses--a place in rheinbeck--also a high rent district--the economy didnt do it to her--she did it on a grand scale.

definition of classic cameras: the ones i use everyday

in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter?

i have a bunch of nikon stuff i dont use: 4 bods, 2 with motors, 10 lenses, bellows, filters, etc, etv. i am holding on to them cause they are not worth much on the market. would rather keep, and perhaps use at some point, than to give it away. for now, i will use the h'blad and leave the f's to rest--they dont eat much and are pretty quiet.

deb: making a profit is ridiculous? offering more and more incremental features for fewer and fewer people does not add to the bottom line. buying out of pity? who said that? i want kodak to make and sell me kodachrome but they wont--why? cause they cannot make money on it. thats all im saying. just because a relative handful of people want a feature does not necessarily make it a good idea.

certainly in todays business environment, manufacturers need products with broad customer appeal and reasonable margins. this is how they make money and thats the only reason they are in business. "speciality items" with very limited demand would have to cost so much to ensure a profit that no consumer could afford them. so there we have it. personally i feel we all have far too many choices in just about every catagory of stuff we want/need.

must have been difficult for hcb to maintain his anonymity whilst walking around with a "black brick" pressed to his face--surely no one would notice that.

i would have to say-"why be sneaky?" remember the old saying--the meek shall not inherit the earth. be bold and go forth and in doing so, your photos will probably improve cause you will not be screwing around being sneaky.

early on, i was a gearhead of the highest order. the more stuff, the better. eventually figured out that the moore stuff you have, the more time spent on fiddling with the stuff and not taking pictures. now i use a h'blad, 50mm lens, a b/w back, and a color back. amazing how much more time i have to take pictures.

boston is a pretty good place for street pics--boston common, chinatown, red light district all close to each other
