1.
because the colors films create are better than digital. especially slides. i'm still working on a small stash of Kodachromes - http://mooostudios.com/light_kr64/light_kodachrome.htm - and digital has got about a decade to go to be this good.

we use film for pleasure and scan for ease of sharing. i doubt professionals make money using film. maybe i'm wrong. i hope i'm wrong...

  2.
wow, you people are powerful! 30 hours to bring that thief down. hopefully it will be a lesson for many who'd like to steel photos from photo.net members and others.

i've been reading up on the web communities and how they self-govern and police themselves. let me tell you, it's one thing to read about Wikipedia and people who keep a watchful eye on the content, but to see it happen in front of my eyes is quite something. y'all rule.

maybe this could be highlighted on somebody's blog or somewhere else so that a wider audience would know how quickly stealing can turn on you.

  3.
dude, i owned the very lens you just got and it had thousands of miles on buses in South America and India - horrible roads and suspensions. it went through ocean travel and salt water dust, deserts, rain, snow and never even once failed. it perfect for 2.5 years until it got stolen.

people seem to be somewhat upset with your original post because you complain before even using it. brake it first then complain.

  4.
i got d300s about two months ago and have to say that the image and video quality are outstanding. here is just one example - <a href="
(watch it in HD) - all the night clips were taken at iso 1600 - HI. if you have too much jello in your videos you can pan slower to eliminate the effect. if you're at all interested in video i'd strongly recommend this camera.

  5.
Howard, in India you don't need to have a long reach - overwhelming majority of people love being photographed. i don't have to sneak up on them and many don't even pay attention when you point your camera at them. in this gallery all but the last photo was taken with a 50mm on dx body - http://mooostudios.com/India_general/other.htm . because of the business on the streets i would strongly recommend as fast of a lens as you are comfortable with. i used that 50mm in 98% of situations.

  6.
i had Canon 50mm 1.8 lens for about 5 years (the lens and the body were stolen some time ago) and soon after i got it it became my main and favorite lens. i went on many overseas trips with it, it's been though Thar and Moquegua Deserts, incredibly bumpy bus rides on the Pan-American Highway in South America and equally bad buss rides in India, it's been in snow storms and rainstorms, i dropped it several times - i never had any build issues with it. it feels weak but it's strong enough for many situations. check these out , all with that trusty 50mm 1/8 - http://mooostudios.com/India_animals/India_animals.htm

  7.
Michael, i thought you were contemplating helping your local economy, which you should, but worrying about lens damage while shipping should be no worry for you. even if UPS plays soccer with the box at every distribution center, it doesn't come close to a 2 hour ride on a buss in an underdeveloped country. and many of us photogs have taken 40 + hour rides many times with no lens damage whatsoever. if your lens arrives broken it's the lens not the UPS.

  8.
i'll admit i'm a mac user - only iMac and iPod that came with the iMac. my iMac didn't get corrupted after 2 months (it's been going strong for 3.5 years) and i replaced hard drive and added memory by myself. i also downloaded all kinds of stuff on it that would've probably made bernard's iMac explode.

for people who say iPad doesn't have this it doesn't have that - it doesn't have it yet! and btw it does have usb - http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ . by the time it's shipping you'll have thousands of applications for it that will do whatever you want. multi-tasking will be introduced within a year, probably this summer. you hate Apple that's fine just say it and move on... back to your clumsy Windows.

if you want a laugh at iPad's expense - here you go.

  9.
Jeff Spirer, you seem to be arguing for the sake of it. i mean, you're a professional photographer and your business "dried up in the past 6 months" - how many free photos did you offer to Tanya?

Alan Ginman, it's true that she may be "in a position to buy photos from professional photographers", but why would she when there are all these nice people who will give it to her for free? Jeff Spirer probably got a ticket to Europe to shoot pretty pix for Tanya for free.

p.s. i don't make money on photos but find Tanya's request for free images so she can make $ ridiculous.

  10.
i just got D300S and the quality at high ISOs is amazing. maybe it's because i've never had a higher end DSLR and for over a year been shooting film but i'm amazed. i only have a video as an example at this time. it was shot at ISO 1600, 3200 and HI1 - <a href="
    - most of it shot at night. the photos look even better. i would certainly recommend this camera.

  11.
i would too recommend going down the Bright Angel or Kaibab. don't have to go all the way down to have spectacular views:

you can check out some pix on my day trip down Kaibab and up Bright Angel - http://picasaweb.google.com/matroskinn/GrandCanyon10102009#
