  1. Thanks gentlemen. Your advice is much appreciated.

Brad, I remember and thoroughly enjoyed your work from a few years ago on the Leica and "street and doc" forum. If

the XSi is good enough for you well then... whatever happened to the street forum anyway? I've been away from

photo.net for awhile spending most of my free time on the golf course, but am recovering from surgery now. Do we have

a new Frank G. that I should be aware of?

Rob. Please excuse me if my questions insult your sensibilities. I only ask because I'm kind of on the fence right now

and thought opinions from members here might guide me towards a decision.

  2. Rob. I'm asking simply because if the JPEGs are gonna be crap and I am forced to spend hours at my computer fixing

RAW files then maybe I'll reconsider getting the DSLR altogether. You seem angry today. Sorry I bothered your apples

and oranges logic. But if I prefer apples, and I saw a worm in it, I'd choose the orange.

  3. I am pondering buying the XSi as I like the small size, and the price. The only thing that makes me want the 40D instead is that it has a

PC cord connection for my strobes. Other than that the XSi has all the features I need. Is there any adapter (like hot shoe to PC)

available? This camera will be mainly used as a walkabout/travel camera and for family pics, but I also plan to shoot my kids' sports

activities. Oh, and I use the strobes every now and then whenever big family events occur and I'm asked to take multiple portraits by

the christmas tree, at easter brunch etc. I prefer to keep weight and size to a minimum as I find I'm much less likely to lug a large

camera everywhere I go. I prefer to keep price down as well with the bodies because this is just fun hobby for me and digital resale

value is like cars and computers.

Also my (not so set in stone) lens choices to get me started are the 35mm f/2 ($240-will be my standard), 50mm 1.4 ($325-for portraits).

I'll keep the 17-55 kit lens handy in case I need something wider. I am more comfortable using primes however (love my Leica toys). I

figure these will pretty much have me covered until baseball season starts and then I'll hopefully have enough saved for the 70-200mm

f/4L non IS($600). I won't be buying any more of the EF-S lenses simply because when the pricepoint for the 5D comes down I'll want to

switch bodies, and won't want to have lenses lying around that I can't use.

BTW, I'm not selling my Leica. I've seen many posts here in the past where people lament selling all their Leica stuff in lieu of digital

and end up going back to ebay to buy pretty much the same stuff all over again. I'll probably sell 1-2 lenses though to finance this

expedition into the DSLR world, along with some golf clubs. (too many toys)

So I guess I'll summarize what advice I'm looking for.

---Can I use my strobes with the XSi without having to use the popup flash to trigger the built in slaves in my strobes?

---Lens choices adequate? the 17-55mm 2.8 is tempting but my lord it's hung like a pornstud and expensive considering I may be selling

it in a year or two. 50mm on my leica is my fav so the 35mm is a no brainer for me. I've seen some stunning examples of the 50 1.4

as a portrait lens, and with the crop factor the 70-200 should have adequate length for kids' baseball. Down the road, I suppose I'll want

between a 20 and 24 fast prime as well, but that'll be a while. These lenses will also be a good staring point for the 5D should I ever

    have a "Imusthaveonecan'tlivewithoutit" episode.

  4. "If you cannot afford one of the better grade cameras how will you find money for all the lens ... all highly amusing."

Always happy to amuse. I was refering to the fact that a lot more options exist for lenses with Canon or Nikon in varying price ranges. Either new, or ebay. I think I'd rather have a cheapo body and great glass rather than the other way around.

I am still undecided. Leaning towards the Canon, but handled a KM 5D over the weekend and it seemed to fit my hands, and I liked the layout of the controls a tad better. I have read so many great reviews about each camera over at dpreview.com

Peter. Thanks for your input. I meant all of the above. Combo of noise, contrast, color rendition, and I guess shadow detail as well as far as the sensor is concerned. Auto-Focus ability in low light just threw me a curve though. This is one more thing I'll have to research.

  5. I am in the market for an entry level dslr. Mostly going back and forth

between the rebel xt and the d50. I am almost set on these because of the

abundance of lenses available. Rebel xt has more pixels, but d50 seems to

have a bigger sensor. I have also contemplated the e-500, minolta 5d, and

pentax *stdl because they seem to be offered at very low prices. What

intrigues me most is the minolta with the built in anti-shake, and the

possibility of zeiss lenses being made in the KM mount. I am shopping for the

new camera for kids' baseball games and also general general use camera. I've

come to a decision that pretty much any camera will meet my needs. High ISO

peformance will probably determine which camera I buy, as they all pretty much

    have the features I want.

So which is it? I think rebel xt or d50 are safe choices, but the KM 5d would

also be nice for the price they can be had for as long as ISO performance is

    good.

  6. KISS is a common expression that makes a lot of common sense. As a photo/angling/tennis buff, this is a wise term that I haplessly try to apply to not only my hobbies but to every aspect of my daily life as well. In the Army this was a term that was taught as a rule of thumb for staying alive during battle. Why would anyone take offense to this? Bottom line in the wise words of my bud Forrest Gump..."Stupid is as Stupid does"

Thanks for thinking of the forum as a place to start a bar-brawl.

  7. Thanks for the well wishes. I was trying to convene sarcasm with the "divine intervention" comment. Once I knew my family was safe the next thought on my mind was "please let my cameras be OK!" everything else is easily replaceable.

There's a positive side to this story now as well. I found a place that we like much better, is only $50 more/month, has a garage for my kayak and fishing gear, and is in a better neighborhood with better schools.

I got in touch with my grandfather's lawyer, and he's gonna research the possiblity of going for damages based on negligence. Thanks Dan for the mention of building codes.
