    Surfer - Va. Beach

Good shot. I like the composition you created with the surfer and the wake behind him. My only suggestion would be shooting at another time of the day to get a little bit better light which will give you better colors to the water.

I have to admit, Machado's long hair helps add to the dynamism of this photo. The black and white conversion also adds a uniqueness to the overall feel.

Better light would really help this photo a lot. I don't know what shutter speed you used, but it does have some slightly increased motion blur to the bird. The pose of the bird is very close to one I just submitted.
  1. Found a nice pond where these birds cluster together. I wasn't sure of the species. It

is a higher ISO than I usually shoot. Are the technicals on this photo high or not?

Another nice vintage treatment. The pulled back view works very well with the clouds in the background. You need to watch your horizon, though. I wonder about a crop to remove the sand and a little bit of the left side to make the surfer just a tad bit bigger in the overall photo.

No surf may not be good that they guy, but the glassy water sure helps with the photograph. Very nice sky to go along with this photo and the lighting on the SUPper is very nice.

The composition doesn't really work that well for me. Looking out of the frame so close to the surfer seems a little awkward. I do like the framing of the curl and foreground whitewater. Also the treatment to age the photo worked pretty well too.

The light is a little harsh for my taste, but the action and composition are very strong. I think a little more processing with contrast and dodging could add to the impact. At a minimum, saturate the red of the board to contrast with the cyan of the water.

I shot polo once, and I think to the polo fans, this would be a well received image. It catches a unique moment. Maybe even non polo players will chuckle at the two looking at the ball behind them.
  2. I appreciate any suggestions for improvement in composition, cropping and exposure.

Some burning and dodging was performed on this photo.

  3. Piers are not as interesting as lighthouses for me. This structure looks like it could be a nice leading line to the lighthouse on a different spot on the pier. To me, it seems a shame that I can see this bold red lighthouse but it is very tiny in the distance. I don't think the graphic nature of the structure is enough to support this photo by itself as the dominant feature.
