Thanks Steve! I had originally intended it to be in color but I just couldn't get the colors to be quite the way I wanted them so I thought I'd try it out in black and white and I liked it much better. :-)

Mark - Thank you, I'm glad you like it. I posted another one from this session in which you can see more of her face. I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Steve - Thank you so much!

Mauro - Thank you! Being added to your favorites is the highest compliment. :-)

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I'm honored that so many of my favorite photographers take the time to stop by and help me improve my work. I agree with you, Mark C., about the yellow spots on her skin. I didn't remove the texture completely in some areas and now that you mentioned it she does look a little jaundiced in some spots.

A Happy New Year to you all!

  1. Thanks Michael :-)

This was one of those times when you see something so cute you just have to grab your camera and hope they don't move before you get back or pay attention to you once you arrive. I lucked out on both counts this time. :-)

    Hi Juan!

Aren't these fun? The first time I saw the effect I loved it so I went online to find out what equipment I needed to do this and first I found really expensive lenses and then I found this great tutorial on how to recreate the effect with photoshop. http://www.tiltshiftphotography.net/photoshop-tutorial.php

So, I pulled up some old shots and played around and was pleasantly surprised. :-)

I hope you had a great Turkey Day with your family. I bet it's beautiful up at your lake right now.

  2. Hi Chad,

I agree with everything Ken said. This is a very good image in many ways but it just lacks a little .... "pop". I'm better at explaining with examples so in the attachment I increased the contrast and saturation slightly and then brightened the center and darkened the edges a bit to draw your eye to the subject. Ofcourse this is all just a matter of personal taste. :-)

As far as software goes, I primarily use a combination of Photoshop CS3 and Nik Color Efex Pro 3.0.

A fabulous portrait! I love the color and texture of the background and the way the green matches her eyes and the berries in her hair. Her eyes are mesmerizing, I can't stop looking at them. It's very reminiscent of an old painting you'd see hanging in some ancient mansion. I love it!

So many photographers choose to use bright or pastel colors when photographing babies but the dramatic lighting and black backround work really well here and make this image stand out from the crowd. Great job!
  3. Thanks David :-)

She spends a lot of her day trying to catch these little butterflies and she was very proud to show off this one that let her carry it around on a flower for awhile.

I shot this wide open because I wanted to isolate the butterfly from her face but I think there might be a little too much blur. Her left eye, in particular, has this weird ring around it that bothers me. I've tried to fix it but it never looks right. I may go back to the drawing board with this one.

What do you think? Is there too much blur or is it just me?
