  1. <p>I am posting this in the Sports forum because I am hoping to get responses from those who shoot a lot of sports. I currently am an Olympus user owning the E-510 and the 50-200 2.8-3.5 lens. I also have the two kit lenses that came with the 510 which are a 14-42 and 40-150 4.0-5.6. I will say right off I am pleased with the camera, especially since I got the 50-200 lens, awesome lens. When I bought the camera I did a fair amount of research between the Oly system and the Canon EOS. When I handled them in the store the Oly won hands down, the EOS XTi just felt too cheap and the kit lenses weren't close.</p>

<p>Now, since I got the camera in May I have stumbled onto the unexpected, I have shot a lot of sports of friends and family and am hooked. I fully intend to make it a serious hobby from this point forward eventually trying to sell prints and maybe do team and individual photos. This shouldn't have been that unexpected I guess because I love sports and played a lot up until a few years ago.</p>

<p>Again, I am happy with Oly for now because I am still learning, but I am advancing and eventually will probably want to upgrade. I intend on shooting both outdoor and indoor sports so obviously you can see where I am going with this....High ISO performance.</p>

<p>Before I get too far down the road with Oly I feel I need to step back and re-evaluate what my priorities are. I will still use the camera and system for landscape shots and nature type photos but I am seeing that sports will be prominent. I think I need to make a decision as to whether I make the Oly system work or I switch now to a more sports focused line. I would like to get some opinions on what would be my best option to make the switch. I realize this is opening Pandora's Box and am risking a billion post brand fight. I don't want that so here is what I was thinking, ground rules if you will.</p>

<p>I am considering a used body, priced around $500. Lenses I would like to get the equivalent of the 50-200mm on the Oly but I understand it won't be as much reach on a 1.6 crop. But minimum f2.8 is a must. Also for a lens I would want something covering the 18-80mm range and maybe an 85 1.8.</p>

<p>What in the Nikon and Canon lines would I look at for those parameters? In Canon I guess I was thinking used 30D but really have no solid idea about the lenses. And in Nikon what would I be looking at?<br>

What I like about Oly is as follows:<br>

The extra reach with the 4/3 sensor<br>

    The in camera IS<br>

The OOC JPEGS look pretty good but I've strated shooting RAW<br>

It's just the High ISO I wish would be better...other than that I am pretty happy with the Oly.</p>

<p>Also, I do have some legacy OM lenses that are fun to toy with but I don't knwo that I should consider them as a factor in this(realizing Canon has the adapter but not Nikon).</p>

<p>Again, I hope I don't start the usual my brand is better than your's. I am looking for what would be the most equivalent to what I have now, just in the Nikon and Canon line so I can better make the decision if I jump systems now.</p>

  2. <p>Just wanted to note if you are getting the 135 2.8 lens with the camera for 40 bucks that's quite a good deal. The lens alone is worth at least twice that.<br>

I also agree about the 28mm 3.5 being a good starting point for a wide angle. Can pick one up pretty cheap and they are a good lens. Also I would definitely pick up a 50mm 1.8 then you have a nice range of primes without shelling out a lot of money. You can typically get a 28 3.5 for around $40 and a 50 1.8 for $20.</p>

  3. I am creating a few different collages in Elements 7 and I am new to Elements period so I am usure why something

is happening. The collages I am creating have nine pictures in them. They are JPEGs that I have cropped and/or

adjusted levels and such and then flattened them and resaved the JPEG to use in the collage(yes I still have the

originals). I am using a collage template in PSE with 12"x12" selected as the paper size.

The original OOC JPEGs are about 6 to 7 mb each. Once cropped, adjusted and resaved they are around 2 to 3

megs each. The PSE file of the collage is about 61 megs. When I save the collage file out as a JPEG with "10" set

as quality and baseline as "standard"(because this is what Adorama asks for) the JPEG file size of the collage is

only 2.6 megs. Is that correct? That seems small and I am afraid I am missing somethign and the quality when

printed at 12x12 will not be there.

Am I following the correct steps? If not what should I be doing different?

    Thanks

  4. I just purchased a Spyder2Express and calibrated my monitor and used the default ICC profile it creates. I also

ordered my first set of prints(5x7s) from Adorama and they look great. I see a little difference in the print to monitor

but I do belive it's just that obviously the monitor is backlit. The prints actually look a little more natural.

My question is do I use the default ICC profile from Spyder or do I load Adorama's ICC profile and use that? For now I

intend to just keep using Adorama since I've been happy with the first batch.

    Thanks

  5. I have seen a yellow bias mostly during one scenario, when I shoot at ISO 400 grass tends to have a much yellower color to it than when at other ISO's shot during the same time. I've shot quite a few Little League games this past summer and it happens nearly every time on 400.

Now I shoot JPEG and do very little PP and when I do it's in Master 2. Eventually I will be doing more PP and shooting RAW so I can't comment on that aspect now. But I at least wanted to point out I see the yellow at ISO 400.

  6. The little guys again. Baseball and soccer. I am now armed with a big upgrade in my lens, a 50-200mm 2.8-3.5 Oly so I would like to go start shooting high school events and see how I make out. My goal is to eventually be able to seel some shots. we'll see.

    Will,

What lens are you using for your swimming? Our friend's daughter swims competitively on a national level and I would eventually like to take my camera along witht he 2.8-3.5 but am not sure even that is fast enough. I've been to enough of her meets to know the lighting can be questionable even at large venues.<div>00REAw-80885684.JPG.f268b4ef9d2e4d4e757a851e522b2d98.JPG</div>

  7. I currently am using the Oly Master 2 software that came with my camera for any PP that I do. I am shooting JPEG

because the RAW developer in Master 2 is very slow and it just uses the in camera settings for WB, sharpness,

    etc... anyhow.

I will eventually be buying PP software, most likely Elements. But my brother-in-law asked if I could give him prints

of all the kids on my nephew's baseball team. I am more than happy to oblige. He asked if I could put "2008" at the

    bottom.

My question is which softwares have the option to put script-like text on photos? Is it only on stand alone type

softwares or does Elements have that option?

Also I will be ordering my prints from Adorama. This will be the first time ordering prints online. Does Adorama, or

any other print order place offer borders and/or text options?

    Thanks

  8. I'll post this question here because it probably happens more often than not in sports. As I watch the baseball

playoffs I see the photographers behind home plate shooting through the black mesh netting. Obviously they are

    able

to do it or they wouldn't be there.

My question is what are the physics behind the ability to focus past the net? Or should I say what are the limits at

which that can be done? As in the thickness of the net, color, minimum aperture lens, distance to subject and focal

    length, etc...?

  9. Yep...the OM-1 theater! Had been awhile since I used it and had forgotten how LARGE the viewfinder is compared to

my E510. Man, it is crazy big it seems. Don't really have a question to ask other than maybe does anyone know

what Oly specifies as the percentage larger that the magnified eyecup will do on the E series cameras?

Mainly just just saying how pleasing it was to use the OM-1 again. I'm certainly no pro and I have used my 510 more

in six months than I did the OM in 12 years but with renewed vigor for the hobby I don't want to let the OM sit

unused. With the digital instant feedback and free mistakes it has given me the confidence to keep picking up the

OM and using it knowing I will actually get usable shots out of it, and the thougth of turning a roll in for proccessing

is exciting. I continue to learn and read and discipline myself to get the shots correct in the 510 out of the camera

(continuing argument I know) and this has allowed me to learn so much faster, flattening the learning curve on the

OM. I thought at first it would be the other way around, learnign all manual on the OM.

Just sharing my experiences and excitment here. Using the OM is like taking a well kept classic car for a spin,

everyone should experience it and appreciate it. A lot of fun. I'm just old enough to experience the anxiety/excitment

of waiting for a roll to be developed and just young enough to be able to appreciate the difital age.

    Thanks for listening. LOL!!

  10. I've shot football only once so far so I'm not sure which mode, C-AF or S-AF is better for that but I will definitely say I think the 510 with the 40-150 definitely performs better in S-AF. I've shot Little League baseball enough times to know for sure S-AF works much better for that.

But before I get too far off track I will stop because I'm not sure if that was John's problem or not. With C-AF it seemed like it was focused but the pictures were definitely not as sharp as when I would use S-AF andf anticipate and time the action.

So afetr I that I'm not sure I heled John. Sorry. LOL.

  11. I know this question has been asked pretty much on a "per brand" level but I wanted to ask it on a general level. Are

there any brands/models of lenses that were originally for film SLRs that you can use directly on a dSLR? Without

an adapter and/or AF confirm chip.

I have an Olympus E-510 I use my OM Zuiko's on once in awhile..with adapter of course.

  12. I also have the E-510 with the two kit lenses. I am still fairly new but learning pretty fast and I have to say I think both the 14-42 and 40-150 are pretty good lenses. Do I want a faster lens like the 50-200mm 2.8? Absolutely. But when using the kit lenses within their capabilities they are pretty darn good. I am thinking you may need to use them more to get comfortable with both the camera and lens capabilities and limits.

Do you have sample shots? Were they wildlife photos you weren't happy with? As Rob asked what exactly weren't you happy with?

  13. Thanks for all the replies! Good info and helpful. I will eventually get Elements so I may go the route of two exposures and blend. I do have one other question though about ND filters. Hopefully someone still reads the thread. haha

I realize for shots with the sky I would need a GND. What if I wanted to do shots of runnign water with longer exposure time to get the silky/milky look of the water. Am I correct in that I would just need a non-graduated ND filter?

  14. I have a trip for work scheduled in Sept. to Monterrey Mexico and am thinkign of taking my Olympus OM-1 and a few

rolls of film. i will be there over a weekend by myself and may walk downtown and take the camera. My only

hesitation is although I've been there five times before I have only ever walked by myself once and it was a quick trip

to exchange money. Monterrey city is nice and has nice areas but I still feel like a target walking around. I may not

be, but I feel that way. My worry is having a camera with me may make it even more so.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Do I need a special container for the film so the X-Ray machine at the airport doesn't ruin it? What other special

considerations do I need to be aware of when packing(will be in checked baggage)?

    2. I have the 28mm 3.5, a 50mm 1.8, and a 135mm 3.5 lenses for my OM-1 and am debating which one(s) to take. I

was thinking the 28 and 135. The 28 because I am thinking I want to take some architectural shots plus it is small

and when I put the 135 on I can put the 28 in my pocket. I don't really want to be carrying a bag around. or should I

just pack the 50 and be done with it?

    3. Has anybody done similar trips where you walked around alone a little unsure of the surroundings? Tips? I am

thinking I will just wear jeans and t-shirt and try to blend in the best an American can in a Mexican city. haha

    4. Anybody been to Monterrey, MX? As I said I was there several times and got to see a little of the city, very

culturally diverse. I am staying at the Crowne Plaza and as I understand there is a Riverwalk nearby.

I am going to see if somebody from our facility can maybe take me around over the weekend but that's not

    guaranteed.
