Leandro,
I tried "Control", "MIP" and "Storage". Storage allows me to tranfer the images but doesn't give me the option to update the firmware(which I may not need according to Jim, I have to look in the manual to see how to check firmware version). No matter which option I select I get the "Unable to detect camera" message.

I just bought an e510.....I love it so far even though I haven't gotten to use it much
yet. But I wanted to see if it had the latest firmware version(which I understand
allows IS for legacy lenses of which I have three) but when I go into Olympus
Master under the "Update Camera" menu selection it says the computer is unable
to find/recognize the camera. Now I have transferred files just fine but when I try to
update it can't find it.
I have Windows XP. Is there an XP setting I need to change? Actually I think this
same error message comes up for my Canon P&S that I now use a card reader for.
Thanks

So, how much of a difference does the sensor size make when making prints? I would eventually like to print sizes of around 8x10. Would the smaller sensor size hinder that? What about 11x14? Nothing that would be museum quality viewing or anything now. Haha
Also as for the adapters...do both the 4/3 and Om to EOS adapters mount to the body or the lenses? In other words would I have to keep switching the adapter from lens to lens if I choose to use them?

Sorry, I was comparing the E-510 and the Rebel XTi.

I know this question has been discussed frequently here and I have searched the
forums and read what I coudl but still feel I want a little more opinion. I may
purchase a dSLR in the near future. Probably not as soon as I would like but still
want to be as knowledgable as I can when ready.
I am trying to decide which would better suit me and be a better deal. Basically it
comes to this. I see I can get an EVOLT with two lenses(14-42 and 40-150) for
slightly more money than the EOS with the kit lens 18-55. The idea of two lenses
to start with is obviously intruging and also the IS in the EVOLT body as well.
Now, I have an OM-1 with three lenses I would like to use on the dSLR. a 50mm
1.8, a 28mm 3.5 and a Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 3.5. I also have a Vivitar 2x
converter. I know I will be using them manually on the dSLR and I'm not sure I
have gotten a clear answer as to which camera the older lenses work better on.
Seems like maybe they work better on the Canon but would like to hear more
thoughts on it.
So I guess my comparison comes down to is the EVOLT for approx $70 more
with the 2 lenses and IS built in better than the Canon with slightly larger
viewfinder, better usability with my manual Zuikos and Vivitar. Also I understand
the Canon has the slightly larger sensor and I am still trying to get my head
completely around exactly the difference the older lenses will be on the digitals.
I am really just getting started in the hobby but will mainly be doing nature and
architecture stuff.
Thoughts? Opinions?

So I stopped at my local camera store to pick up a roll of color film and as I am
paying I see a bucket of B&W Kodak 125PX film and it's on sale. I have been
wanting to try B&W in my OM-1 MD so now I am going to. My question is this...Do I
pretty much load it, set to 125 ISO and shoot away as normal. I realize in my
readings on here that filters would make a difference with B&W and if I like it
enough(probably will) I will eventually invest in filters. But for now am I safe to just
shoot away and get it developed? I know it seems like a simple question but I just
wanted to make sure there wasn't something simple I was overlooking. Mainly will
shoot some landscape and architecture. Will even put on my newly purchased
Zuiko 28mm 3.5 wide!!

Sorry, I forgot to add I would eventually like to buy a dSLR, most likely a Canon Digital rebel so I can use my OM lenses on it.

I would like to purchase a tripod and have been reading on here and other
review sites trying to narrow it down. One thing I notice is the multitude of
model numbers even from same manufacturers with slight differences in
features. So I thought I'd just start a thread laying out my wants/needs.
I mainly want to use the tripod for nature/landscape so I would be packing it
to take on hikes. Lightweight isn't a neccesity even though I'll be packin it.
I don't mind it being a little heavy. Another use I may end up wanting it for
is ruins and run down vacant buildings. I am just getting started in this as a
hobby and although I haven't done much so far delapidated buildings intruige
me.
As for camera and lenses right now I have a OM-1 MD. Lenses I have Zuiko 50mm
1.8, Vivitar Series 1 70-210, and just purchased a Zuiko 28mm 3.5. I also have
a Vivitar 2x converter I would liek to use. I've been trying to read more on
the 2x converter to see if it is worth using or not. I've gotten mixed reviews
so far.
I also have a Canon Powershot 720IS I would like to experiment with on the
pod. Not neccesary but if I could use it too on it why not right?
Since I am just delving into the hobby I would like to stay under $100. any
recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the info folks. To Konrad's point about a quick search on EBay and the 3.5 and 2.8 being about the same he is correct. I started to compile too many "Watching" items and the two I saw that ended that went for $158(US) were the 24mm 2.8's. That makes sense. Sorry I start looking at so many different lenses and it can get get confusing. Haha.
If both the 2.8 and 3.5 28mm go for relatively the same I will definitely go with the 2.8 and stick with the Zuiko.

I want to get a wide angle lens for my OM1 and have been wathing EBay for one.
I am basically a complete newb at this but have been reading a lot over the
past few weeks. I have a 50mm and 70-210mm for my OM1 but want a 28mm or 24mm.
So far it seems the 28mm can be had much more reasonable and for now I want to
keep the invesment fairly low until I feel I deserve to buy better equipment.
No reason for a rookie to have the better stuff when he has little clue as to
use it to it's full potential and appreciation.
I primarily see two different 28mm lenses, one is a f3.5 and the other a f2.8.
The f2.8 looks like it goes for nearly twice the price as the f3.5. My
question is why? Does the one f stop(I'm assuming one f stop like I said I'm
still pretty green at this) make that much of a difference or are the optics
better as well? If I buy the f3.5 based on price will I regret it later and
wish I really would have bought the 2.8?

Thanks for the quick responses. Much appreciated. Actually makes it simple when it's based on manufacturer. Less confusing actually. Just wanted to make sure I didn't overlook an opportunity to pick up some lenses.

I posted my first thread a couple of weeks ago asking if it was worth pulling
out my old OM1 and using. Well, I was very happy with all the responses I got.
Over the weekend I stopped at the store and picked up some 675 zinc air
batteries and a roll of 400 film. Basic Kodak Max film. Didn't need anything
great film wise as I just want to run a roll through it and see how everything
works/looks. Plus I'm spending more and more time on this site and what a
great site it is. So now I'm really getting the fever. I hope to be getting
out this week to start getting some photos. I started to get the phot bug 15
years ago when I bought the OM1 used but it kind fell tot he wayside but now I
have more time and resources and want to pursue it more.
So, on with my question. I have two lenses I got with the camera, a Zuiko 50mm
and a Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm 3.5 which thru this sound found out was a
pretty good lens. Also I have a Vivitar 2x converter. I want to get a 28mm
lens shortly and have been watching the Bay for one. Seems there are plenty.
So as I look for lenses I am trying to figure out how many different mounting
styles there are? As an example a friend tells me his son has an older Canon
with quite a few lenses that he no longer uses. So I need to educate myself on
which lenses fit on which cameras. Is there a link to a site or here on this
site that has a list or spreadsheet or something that can tell me this?
Thanks

My first post here so if I break any rules or credo I apologize in advance.
Plus I am a newbie that is aware that this photo bug can bite hard...which can
be a good thing.
I have an old(er) 35mm film camera. It's an Olympus OM-1. I bought it used from
a coworker about 20 years ago. I'm thinking he had it for about 5 so I'll
venture to say it's a relic. It has a 50mm lens and also a Vivitar 70-210
telephoto lens. If I remember correctly he said he used it for wedding photos
as a side job. Along with it came a Vivitar flash that tilts, colored flash
filters, lens filters(starburts looking maybe?), an autowinder, handle and
other little odds and ends.
I had used the camera for a few years when I first got it. Mainly for sporting
events and also just snapshotting type stuff. I remember being very impressed
with the pictures for the guy operating being a hack. LOL. I had bought a
photograghy book to start to learn my new hobby.....well, it kind of fell to
the wayside.
Since then I have joined the digital age and am on my second Canon
Powershot...current one is the 720IS. I have been reading up how to use the
manual controls(this is a great site by the way!) because now I really do want
to start to take the hobby a little more seriously. I am a woodworker as well
so I intend on making my own frames and matting them.
OK...very long winded here sorry. My question is this.....is the OM-1 worth
ressurecting and using? Or am I better off using the snot out of the digital
until I eventually upgrade after I've had the bug for awhile? I realize using
the fully manual film camera will educate me more on photograghy itself by
forcing me to learn aperture, shutter speeds, depth of field, etc....or will
using the digital as manual as I can result in the same learning curve?
Thanks...sorry it was a long post!
'Legacy" flash on e510
in Olympus
Posted
Ok. I'm sure I know the answer to this but I will ask anyhow. I have a Vivitar flash
for my old OM1...can I use it for my new e510? I haven't researched it at all yet
because I figure a simple yes/no answer from the kind and knowledgable folks
here will save me a lot of time. Not that I don't like to search for my own answers I
just figure I really know very little about flash that I wouldn't know which keywords
or phrases to start searching under.
BTW I'm guessing the answer is no.
Thanks as always
