3.

And be aware that if the animal takes the shot, it can't be copyrighted in the US.

Which was, by the way, an incredibly stupid decision. If a human does everything but physically push the button, how is that not that person's photo? Does a human without fingers lose the copyright if he sets up everything in a photo, but asks another human to push the button?

What would likely happen is some snarky stuff, noses out of joint and a mountain would evolve from a mole hill.

Comments don't seem to derail the W/NW posts in the Street and Documentary forum. W/NW posts usually have the most civil threads.

 11.
There is another whole set of little things you have to find out on your own.
I remember the first time shooting a bunch of interviews-- after working on video productions for years in a non-camera operating technical position, thinking it can't be all that hard-- and cutting the tape just a second or two early, or saying "That's great, thank you" or something like that right on the last word. Over and over.

Didn't know until I started cutting stuff together what a pain in the neck it would be to fix those mistakes. But it was one of those things that isn't in books and such.

 15.
A clean install is only possible after upgrading directly from 7/8/8.1.
Once that upgrade is done, you can start over from scratch on the same computer.
I believe the licence is then tied to the motherboard, not the hard drive, but check with the upgrade information online before trying that.

I went the route of downloading the full upgrade iso for 32 and 64 bit systems, creating a bootable disk on a usb drive, and double clicking an exe file on the upgrade disk. The same upgrade usb worked for both our 32 bit and 64 bit machines. The 32/64 bit iso won't fit on a dvd, so if you have to use a dvd you will need to download either the 32 or 64 bit iso.

Prepping took hours to download and then copy to the usb, but the actual upgrade was less than 2 hours.

 16.
The learning curve for me has been that they moved a few things around, so it sometimes takes a little googling to figure out how to modify things like menu fonts, for example, which I prefer to have bold. Took a lot of digging to find that.

Takes a few days to get all that stuff down, learn what's customizable (like how to make the start menu work for you, get rid of a few useless tablet/phone apps.) Edge is okay, but needs a lot of plugins to make me stop using Firefox.

Otherwise, it's pretty much the same thing in a slightly different package. Also seems to have cured a few small Windows 7 bugs that I used to deal with. Hasn't crashed once in about two weeks. Every program from the old installation works fine, including Office 2003.

If you have 7 and like it, there's not much need to change. I upgraded from 7, and am enjoying tinkering around in there, but I still have a little of the 'computer hobbyist' in me.
If you're on Windows 8/8.1, you might want to make the move. 10 is much better than 8/8.1, in my opinion.

 17.
I know all too many people, myself and friends included, who have been detained, arrested, questioned, forced to leave the area, threatened, coerced, etc, for taking photographs and/or recording police, so I'd say no.

Will this new law eliminate those detentions. Not all of them. Cops can always find some way to eff with someone. They live for effing with people. But it definitely offers a defense in the case of an arrest. It's good to have black letter law on your side when documenting police misconduct.

 18.
The new law, SB-411, passed the California State Assembly and Senate overwhelmingly. Governor Brown signed the bill into law on August 11, 2015.
The following is the new law as amended by SB-411.
The amendments are in italics.
Pretty self explanatory. California laws usually go into effect in the next year.
__________________________
Section 69 of the Penal Code is amended to read:
69.
(a) Every person who attempts, by means of any threat or violence, to deter or prevent an executive officer* from performing any duty imposed upon the officer by law, or who knowingly resists, by the use of force or violence, the officer, in the performance of his or her duty, is punishable by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170, or in a county jail not exceeding one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
(b) The fact that a person takes a photograph or makes an audio or video recording of an executive officer, while the officer is in a public place or the person taking the photograph or making the recording is in a place he or she has the right to be, does not constitute, in and of itself, a violation of subdivision (a).

SEC. 2.
Section 148 of the Penal Code is amended to read:
148.

(a) (1) Every person who willfully resists, delays, or obstructs any public officer, peace officer, or an emergency medical technician, as defined in Division 2.5 (commencing with Section 1797) of the Health and Safety Code, in the discharge or attempt to discharge any duty of his or her office or employment, when no other punishment is prescribed, shall be punished by a fine not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by imprisonment in a county jail not to exceed one year, or by both that fine and imprisonment.
[...] Full text at this link.
(g) The fact that a person takes a photograph or makes an audio or video recording of a public officer or peace officer, while the officer is in a public place or the person taking the photograph or making the recording is in a place he or she has the right to be, does not constitute, in and of itself, a violation of subdivision (a), nor does it constitute reasonable suspicion to detain the person or probable cause to arrest the person.

______________

* An executive officer is a public employee who may exercise some or all of his/her own discretion in performing his/her job duties. Any employee who is charged with enforcing the law is an executive officer. This is a much broader definition than a peace officer.
