Just an idea...bbw (blue - black and white). I don't know if it works for many ...it may be way off Vilnis'intention... it may make the photo less special...

  1. I think the picture would be more appreciated if one could see more detail, because I think there so much to see....the shark, the fish, the structure of the soil.

As for the orientation of the picture: Chacun a son gout. My preference would be as shown above: I like to read from left to right from top to bottom. That feels more comfortable to me :)

I am not sure if the picture is abstract enough, but perhaps the

radiator symbol is. No digital alterations were made: the background

is the result of setting the fstop (of the 180 mm ED lens) at 4.

And I just wonder does the Japanese word "Bokeh" finds its origin in

    the French word "Bouquet".

  2. Hi Tony,

an illustration of how much livers the Greeks are, was illustrated, when their soccer team became European champion this year. It turned Athens upside down.

The Greeks never expected it, but took the occasion to celebrate at every step they came closer to the final. And then winning it...

And so their soccer team made a long nose to all those teams with their expensive players and countries that expected so much.

BTW I must say, this part of photonet is a very interesting read: the least one can say is that it provides very refrishing thoughts.

  3. Hi Tony,

Great picture of a remarkable place..

I would not call this place a consolation price (although I am sorry to hear about your car trouble and you guys not achieving your initial goals).

It is not a consolation price in my view considering its beauty and the fact that human remains were found, dating back more than 50000 years.

Apart from the picture, that is wonderful to watch, your prose is -as always- also great to read. Thanks.

  4. Sorry to hear (read) this. My sympathy to you and your family.

You made a wonderful tribute to your father and mother. I think it are these memories that are precious. They are worth more than anything else.

    Take care.

  5. Great photo. The skies in Sydney are as great as they are in Holland.

The lamp at the left works great just because the bulb is only partially visible.

The light opening in the cloudy sky leads my eye to the middle of the bridge...the light opening is in the perfect place between the buildings in the left and the bridge....a stroke of a genious. Considering the time it all took to make the pics and the darkness setting in....a marvellous job.

The opera house gives a nice light element at the right end of the picture.

All in all I think you got there. I hope you will have just as great a sky the next time you go there.

Congrats with this pow, David. Great photo. Makes me smile. The open mouths, the girl with the handbag, the boy and his father in their nicest clothes.

I am just curious how the picture without the small amount of blurring looked like. Maybe, the man with the moustache stands out a little less then.

BTW, I like your Kids' Corner photographs as well.

  6. Well comparing this picture with the one there, I prefer this one. The impact of the person with the sun-glasses looking at me is what does it for me. The other picture has a strong element in that we see the people's faces three quarters from the front looking towards the right (the one person with the long hair and the sun glasses looks a bit too much to the right in my view).

The panorama format (used in both pictures) is a great format to photograph a demonstration.

The best of two pictures would be a picture with people looking towards the right listening to the speeches, and with one or two somewhere in the center looking directly at us. I also think the banners people are carrying in this picture and the fact that you get an impression about the number of people tells more about the demonstration.

  7. The way the person with the sunglases looks at the photographer, reminds me a bit of "The Coronation of George VI" by Henri Cartier-Bresson...(the boy and "his mother" looking at Henri Cartier Bresson in that picture).

What I like about the photograph is that it shows something of the large crowd at the demonstration, looking/listening perhaps at a speech that was given and at the same time it shows something personal by that person with the sunglases looking at the photographer....and perhaps to us (maybe that is why he looked at the photographer), who are looking at your picture. A bit far fetched perhaps..but this an impression/thought I get from the picture.

  8. Darrin, congrats with your well deserved POW. A great picture (more below).

As for the presentation ("the cropping") it is fine with me. Besides one could not criticise Shakespeare for writing a sonnet in stead of another style of verse (nor did the sonnet blocked his creativity ..and on the contrary it baffles people what he did with this form of verse).

I like the balance of the people walking/bycicling on the bridge. They were at the right moment the shot was taken. In vertical direction the amount of water is just enough. I like the little reflections of the pillars in the water. I can just see where the bridge pillars start in the soil. My monitor is not that good, but I think th real print shows this even better. These little gradations in color...make it more than a silhouette to me.

A good eye to catch this moment. I like the other photographs in Darrin's portofolio as well, but for me this picture works like an icon, that still captivates my mind.

Congrats with being selected for POW. The curve of the window is a great touch. I have the impression the picture would have become much nicer if the "Bulage whale" had come closer to the person on the right...thus enabling a tighter framing. But (I guess) this whale did not and then one can only make the best of it...and as far as I can judge you did.

However, I would have chosen your picture of "The Seaguls" as POW...that one is really stunning.

  9. After seeing such a great photo one starts pondering "Where did the inspiration for this shot come from or what triggered the shot?"

From the song "How much is that doggie in the window" a major hit in 1953??? Nearly 50 year's ago. Are we having a coincidence here? And the

mentioning of the state of California in that song and the fact that this picture is taken in California. Another coincidence? And could this picture also have a second (sub) title "Lawrence's home coming".
