1.
Thanks Keith and Matthias. I'm going to try you suggestions. A few questions on the Lightroom fix. Should I be importing the images directly off the camer using Lightroom for it to work? Right now I use the Canon software to download the images and then import into Lightroom. Maybe that's the problem. And, is there a little box some where in the Lightroom settings that I need to click to ensure that the hot pixels are fixed as they import into Lightroom?
Thanks again for all your help.

 2.
Hi folks,
I need a software recommendation for batch processing hot pixels. I just got done shoot a wedding and have many, many candid shots taken in low light that have several annoying hot pixels. I talked to the Canon service rep and he siad that I can either send my 5D Mark II into the service center and they can reprogram it, or try a 3rd party software fix.
So, what do you guys think? Is there a good software program that you can recommend? Should I send my camera to the service center? Should I by a new Mark III (just kidding)?
Thanks for you help!
P.S. I'm using a MAC.

 3.
I did some PR consulting on the side and also found that the Yellow Pages was worthless. But, I suspect that professional consulting businesses such as law and PR are geared toward a different crowd. Photography has more of a mass market appeal, and I'm wondering if a Yellow Pages ad would be useful.

Also, I live in the Washington DC Metro area and my website is nonexistent when you type the typical search terms into Google and other search engines. I'm hoping Yellow Pages will at least get my name in front of eyeballs that are looking in places in addition to the Internet.

 4.
Kevin, thanks for the great response. It definitely gives me a lot to think about.

Mark, unfortunately Zenfolio only offers basic website templates and I can’t change the size of the slideshow. If business picks up for me next year, one of the first things I’m going to look into is have a professional website built.

Todd, I’ll also look at Google Adwords too.

 5.
Hi everyone,

For the most part, my photography business has been part-time job at best. All my clients have all come through word-of-mouth. As a stay-at-home dad, I haven’t wanted to be that busy anyway, so the few gigs I’ve gotten here and there have been fine. Well, both kids are going to be in school fulltime starting this fall, and I’m interested in picking up some more businesses. Also, the end of last year was great. I had a few high-paying corporate gigs come in and everything went extremely well. I’m confident now that I can consistently and quickly put out a professional product that most potential clients will want.

This has got me thinking about where I want to spend money to get my name out to a wider audience. I think I’ve taken advantage of all the free stuff that’s out there such as Google, Yahoo and Bing listings, website, blogs, Facebook, Yelp, Linkedin – anything I’m missing?

So where to spend the money? Yellow Pages, internet ads, local paper, direct mail and other options have me confused.

Right now I’m marketing myself as specializing in family portraits and corporate headshots. Feedback on my website would be helpful too: http://alexthornephotography.zenfolio.com/

Thanks for your advise.

 6.
Thanks Kent. I wasn't trying to match my monitor to my laptop, I was trying to make the point that the laptop monitor looked better - no green hue - compared to the NEC monitor.
Under display settings, do you know if you have it set to: "Non-PnP Monitor", or "PnP Monitor"?
I haven't looked at the Mpix profiles, just the calibration kit that comes with a print and TIFF to view on your monitor and used to match the print.
Thanks again.

 7.
Thanks in advance for reading and answering my question. I'm using Spyder2express to calibrate my monitor. I'm a little confused as to which settings to choose under the Color Management controls for Windows Vista. Here is what I've set, and I hope someone here can tell me if this is correct.
Device profile: Spyder2express
Viewing conditions profile: WCS profile for sRGB viewing conditions
ICC Rendering to WCS Gamut Mapping
Default rendering intent: system default (Perceptual)
Perceptual (photo images): System default (Photography)
Relative Colorimetric (line art): System default (Photography)
Absolute Colorimetric (simulate paper): System default (Photography)
Business Graphics (charts and graphs): System default (Photography)
Mind you, I have no idea what any of this means. I've been trying to calibrate my monitor, which is a NEC: MultiSync EA231WMi. The color on this monitor gives me a greenish hue compared to my laptop that it is attached to. I'm also trying to manually fine tune the monitor to the Mpix calibration kit, which provides you with a print, and a TIFF image that you use for making adjustments.
I hope from this information, someone can give some suggestions and advise.

Best,
Alex

Hi folks,

I’m about to do my first big photo shoot/fundraiser for a local preschool. Originally, I had planned to do all the print orders myself, however, after coming across Zenfolio, I’m thinking about setting up an account, with the expectation that it will make life for me a lot easier. I’ll potentially have over 100 orders. I like the fact that Zenfolio partners with Mpix and that I can offer more than just prints to potential customers, not to mention not having to do all the orders myself.

My question is: what other services similar to Zenfolio should I be looking at before deciding.

Photography is very much a hobby for me, but in the next few years I’m planning on investing more time and money into promoting my business. I would love to have the option of providing password protected galleries linked to an online printing service. I don’t think Zenfolio offers that, but I might have missed it when I was reviewing their site.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

 9.
Some things about the Sigma 30 1.4 I should add. I use it mainly for low light portrait shots and the center performance is outstanding wide open. However, as has been discussed in many of the reviews online, edge performance is pretty poor, even stopped down. Not an issue for how I use the lens, but may be for you depending on what you are shooting. Also dropped this lens from about 4 feet onto a tile surface without any damage to the lens. It's very well built.

 10.
Here's a partial update. I got my camera back from Canon's Jamesburg, NJ Factory Service Center. Total cost was $201.00 for service and Labor. IT DOESN'T WORK! I don't understand how Canon could send me back my camera without testing it. It's actually worse then when I sent it. That's just unacceptable Canon.

It's being sent back for further service. So that's at least another week without a camera.
