I just counted and there are 25 Coolpix cameras on the Nikon USA site. 25! If I wanted to buy a compact camera, which one should I buy? The pretty one? That is way too many choices for somebody who walks into a Bestbuy looking for a camera. No wonder Smartphones look so attractive.

I have a V1 that I use with my motorcycle and scooter. Most of the time I just toss it under the seat. It has no scratches. I also have an Olympus EM-1 that under the same conditions has a chipped and the paint is wearing some. It is a great camera but I can't help to think it is rather flimsy.

I suppose it is robbery only if it isn't worth fixing. It does seem to me that photo equipment is a lot more sensitive to damage these days. I rolled a boulder over my F2 in a soft bag while doing field work in New Mexico (not on purpose, it was a rattlesnake situation). Seriously, the thing was over 2 feet in diameter. The damage? One small dent in the body where the strap ring hit it. All 3 lenses were fine. Do that with a D800 and modern lenses? Shards.

You might find the 17-55 to be a bit nose heavy on a D7000 or lighter body. But you will get used to it. It is a great lens.

I have purchased two refurbished cameras, both from Adorama, I believe, and wouldn't hesitate buying another one. I fail to see the problem.

You might consider something like a refurbished D7000 in the Nikon store. Nice camera and not ungodly expensive. It has a DX (cropped) sensor.

I have a V1 that I toss in the tank bag of my motorcycle or under the seat of my Vespa. Small, light and cheap along with great build quality. I think it is an under-regarded camera, even with its nits.

$450 for the optical viewfinder??? The Coolpix A would be great for $600, including the viewfinder. Which is about what I will be paying for one 6 months from now.

I makes me relieved that I do not have the market on that crazy thing we can do to our equipment. Heck, I dropped my micro-Nikkor in the drink once. Spent about as much fixing it as it was worth.

I ride a motorcycle with limited storage capacity. I also have a D700 and D7000 but I simply do not have sufficient storage. So I first tried I tried the EP2 but was let down by slow autofocus. Then I tried the Nikon V1, which I still have. You can pick those up screaming cheap these days. But the answer for me is the E-M5. I really like that camera. So much that I will probably be selling the D7000 and the couple of DX lenses I have. Anyway, good luck with you decision. I doubt that you can go wrong these days.

Are you running 32 or 64 bit OS?

After spending $$$ on a V1 system all I really want from Nikon is an upgrade of that stupid mode dial.
-

I have been looking for something small that I can take while motorcycling. Tried EP-2 and Nikon V1. Now I have an OM-D. That is a great camera. Very well designed. I believe I have found the answer.

Get a 17-55mm Nikkor used.

-

Yup, a pioneer (me) took the arrow on that one. I like the V1 but it does have a couple of idiosyncrasies to it. The mode dial is a continuous pain.

-

It appears they didn't fix that stupid #$%^$#$% mode dial. I have a V1 and if I knew that thing would be such a pain, I never would have considered the camera.

-

I can attest by experience. Sure you are using the right hood?

-

I may be full of it but you might want to try the V1 and the 10-100mm zoom.

-

Well, a new used one anyway.

-

That lens is just about the best deal in optics. You might just want to search ebay or something for a new one.

-

You spent that much money on a D800, why would you want or need to use cheap CF cards? Just use what Nikon recommends.

-

Yeah, that technology thing will bite you. I upgrade my stuff all of the time and am happy to do so. I figure it is just the cost of doing business.

-

And to think I just ripped my CD player out of my Mac Book Pro for a SSD. CD/DVD burners are going to go the way of the floppy one of these days.

The price of the D7000 is very reasonable. I picked up a refurb for $1k (as I recall). I added it to the cart to see the price and they got me. I find it to be a great camera and use it more than my D700, due to size. But if you want a FX sensor, the D700 is not a pile of antiquated crap. At all. I hope Nikon will keep the D700 or a derivative of it in production at a somewhat lower price point. I certainly am not going to replace it with the D800. I don't need it.
