  1. Hi William. I like the composition you have here, and the warm tones. But the photograph looks a little soft when I view large. Also, there are some lines where it appears (I may be wrong) that you have tried to clone stuff out in post processing, but they are still visible. Also, you have quite a few spots showing in the sky from sensor dust. I've attached a picture with these parts circled. Hope this helps.

Gord, I'm trying to do some catching up on you and this one hit me! What I love about all these pictures is the sensitive treatment you give to the colour - there's never anything too highly saturated, just beautifully natural looking painting with light.

BTW, I've just looked up the specs in my special book for the camera you took this lens from. It's actually fitted with a special plastic X-ray lens which is the explanation for the wall being visible through the pipe!

  2. flippin' excellent. It's great that the moon has crept in there as well. And the flare from the lights gives a sort of surreal feel to the whole photographs. So many different elements all in one frame - most excellent.

    Lead Rope 2

I like the fact that you have focused on the knotted rope - works well. Your re-worked image is even better with much more punch. Good photograph, and definitely works best in BW as it accentuates details in the rope and on the bark of the tree that would be lost in colour.

  3. But this works really well too. I like that there are reddish highlight showing in you hair. But I also seem some sort of colouration on your skin coming round from your chin and up the side of your face that perhaps doesn't look intentional. Did you use coloured lighting for this?

Hi there Micki! It's only me...

Definitely this BW version looks fantastic. Great composition with the angle of your head suiting the frame really well. And the fairly high key light on your face really makes your left eye look sharp and piercing. Cool the way your right eye is just peeping through your hair.

Matt, this photograph is fantastic - everything about it. It's like one of those hunting paintings from years gone by where everything needed to tell the story is in one frame - the dog being there too is a great part. Nice work.

Pierre. Many thanks for your helpful comments. I have just altered the black point on the histogram to darken the dark area and think this is perhaps better (see attached photograph). Re the softness of the "Line 6" text, I'm not sure if this is the result of focus, but rather a combination of the following: the lens was used wide open, the surface of the equipment is textured, it is covered in dust, and I didn't apply much sharpening to the final size image in post processing (images come quite soft out of Canon 10D). So I have also sharpened the picture a little more. Perhaps also noise reduction has something to do with it.

Thank you very much again for being so helpful and for taking the time to comment.

Why did I take this picture? Well, I was looking for subject in a dark

corner to try out ISO 1600 on the Canon 10D, and I ended up with this

and I like it. Any thought on composition would be appreciated. Dead

space on the left - wasn't sure if it would work but I think it has the right

amount of detail still there to be of some interest.

This is beautiful - I love that the shadows thrown across the space between the trees produce what looks like a piano keyboard. The low sun in the sky has brought out great colour on the ground. Well done for taking this at just the right time.

Great photoand I echo all that's been said previously.

Longtang, there's a simple reason why people won't rate this as a 7 for originality - that's because it doesn't warrant a 7 for originality (at least not in the opinion of the people who have rated it, or in my opinion). Moving the hair won't make it any more original either. A picture can have excellent aesthetics without having excellent originality, and vice versa - it can have excellent originality without having excellent aesthetics.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts with me about this picture, and I'm pleased it has worked well. So sorry for taking such a long time to acknowledge you though.

The hair over the eye was initially a bit of an issue fr me, but I've grown to like it especially as she always has her hair in her face and it's just so typical "her"! It's funny how she'll make a BIG fuss about an irritating tag in a T-shirt, or the irritating bits in the end of her socks and so on, but she'll happily go around all day with hair in face, and even hair in face while eating. MAD!

Micki, it's scaring me thinking about what my kids are going to be like as they're growing up. Lovely one minute, then spitting flames the next! Oldest is now 14....and she can be vicious!! All fun though I suppose.

Nataliya, I think you're good on the contrast on this photograph. It's not too harsh, which suits the subject well. This made me smile as I was scrolling down the list of pictures to view - you've caught the "look" really well.

I like this a lot too. Such a familiar sight, and intriguing trying to work out what's through the windshield! Nice focus with dof that shows the rain clearly as well as the scene. Great colours. Well taken opportunity! Pete

    Hi Gord.

Many thanks for dropping by this one. and for your suggestion of trying to get line of focus through one of the pooches eyes as well. This is what I had tried for with this but missed the mark (was pretty low light and it's hard to focus manually with the 10D focus screen).

Definitely busy at the moment - trees, hedges, fences, walls....it goes on and on! And the PhD.....well, trying to finish it but every time I open one of the files on my PC I get this sick watery feeling in my mouth.

I'm just about to nip over to your portfolio to check up on what you're doing with plastic lenses. Any lensbaby stuff there yet?

Wenti, this is just about my favourite of your plant photographs. I love the simplicity of the picture and the fact you have taken a photograph of something so common in the kitchen and made it something special. Nice one - well done.

Thanks Alexa for taking the time to comment. Definitely wouldn't be without our dogs - we save so much money as days out now usually consist of finding nice places to walk, and the kids love it!

    Cheers, Pete
