  1. This is rather strange. I don't see what one's age has to do with it unless your five and producing steller images. I am 36 but have only been shooting a year and have been serious about it for less then that. Not to offend people at flickr but you may find more 17 year olds on there but that's just an assumption of mine. Since your a member of PN we are all your peers and if you would like to see what you are up against just browse top photos. Good Luck Gabe! Shay-
  2. Andrew - that's up to Dave. But something in between the metered highlights and shadows and adjust to taste. Normally it's better to underexpose rather than overexpose as it's easier to recover detail in lost shadow areas than in lost highlights.

Dave - If you could, when you get a chance, just throw a pic on here of it so we have a better idea of what your going for. Lighting it is a good choice but consider other options as well. I'm sure others may have other suggestions. Good Luck. Shay-

  3. The only experience I had with the law concerning photography was a good one. I was taking photos at a lake. There were people fishing and I guess the cops come around once in a while and check for fishing licenses. I was a little surprised to see cops doing this as I thought it was only wildlife enforcement types that did that.

Anyway as she got to me she just walked by with a smile and said hello and went on to check on some other fisherman. She got back to her car and pulled out to leave when she stopped by me and started to talk to me about other interesting areas to shoot that I may have not been aware of. We talked for about five minutes or so about it and I thanked for her info and she went on her way.

Of course this was just a lake and not a so called "sensitive area." How I feel about cops is the way I feel about all people and that is most people are good. Some, well you know. I suppose I would do the same thing Robert Shults did in his situation. Every stuiation is different. I think one important thing to remeber in situations like these is that these people have a boss and if their is a problem ask to see them. If it's an institutional thing well then you have to work to change it or just forget about it.

On another note I once had a neighbor think I was a cop. I was taking photos at night, on my property, and the flash caught their attention. How one could think this is beyond me, I would have to be one stupid cop to be right out in the open using a flash. One came over and asked what I was doing. I said I am taking photos. He said his girlfriend thought I was the cops taking photos of them. We laughed about it and he went back to inform her of her paranoia.

  4. I am looking at it all through my narrow lens. I don't understand this "going nowhere" thing though. I don't know anything about galleries except from little bits I caught on TV programs about someone. One example of where I am coming from is I saw, on TV, some work held in a gallery by a musician that had artwork that was completely ridicules, to me anyway. I don't understand how it all works and I find it strange. I am also a bit confused about your puzzle reference. I think of myself as an intellect, probably the reason why you find some of my posts pedantic, lol.

I suppose by your take that one photo is irrelevant that you mean its ok for an image to be junk as long as it fits the theme? I find this rather strange. But yes, I should go to one to see what you mean. I am here in the Chicagoland area so I am sure downtown has something I can see in relation to what we are discussing. I myself am certainly not lazy but I can't attest to anyone else. As you said I am trying too hard and now you give me more work, lol.

I don't know what you mean by viewing images online will not make one good. I don't know how vieing images anywhere will make anyone good.

  5. Or am I just expecting to much? I am not happy with my last BB shoot. I am sure

it was all me but I feel to many of the shots are blurry or soft. Maybe it was

setting it at 1.4 and 1.6 but crap that's why I bought that lense. Sure now I

can shoot in lower light but everything is soft. Just seems no end to the trade

off. I am thinking I should sell everything and get a Mark III. Or is there

    something better?

  6. I am interested in doing some photography charity type work but have no idea

where to start. Any ideas? Also I remember a long time ago, before I knew

anything about photography, I saw a Dateline thing or some special about a guy

who went around and took photos of children at adoption places and because of

his efforts more children were adopted. Do you know who this was? And is this

type of thing still happening? It sounds like something I would like to do.

    Thanks. Shay-

  7. During my travels through the photography world I have found many strange

things. One strange thing is this idea of "project" or "theme" studies/work in

photography. I can't show you an example as it would offend someone and I am

growing tired of offending. The thing is, I have seen so called "great" works

when presented as a "project" or "theme" and all be it interesting when one

views a single photo separate from it; it usually is not very good. Or to say

if someone views a single photo separate and unaware of the project it loses

its significance. I guess what I am trying to say is that a photo should stand

on its own without the need for titles and such to guide the viewer. Yes? No?

    Thoughts?

  8. "Are we looking for confirmation from a bunch of strangers that we are a accomplished photographer?" Yes

"Are we so insecure about ourselves that we have to get a high rating before we feel good about ourselves?" Not ourselves but our photography

"Does 3/3 make us lesser of a photographer?" Yes

"Do we actually feel good when our photos are rated higher than anyone else?" Yes

"Do we get a trophy when we get a lot of 7/7s?" No but maybe something else.

"A photograph is simply a way of us expressing ourselves. This is not a competition." Yes it is.

"We don't need to get our ego stroked by a bunch of strangers to feel good about ourselves." Yes we do.

  9. I have only recently begun to understand the market of photography so please

excuse my ignorance of the subject and maybe you can give me your thoughts to

help me better hone my view. I have started to look into the stock agencies and

I get the feeling that many of them have a left side of the aisle sort of view

on the world. What I find most interesting is that their biggest clients are of

those that which they usually claim as a problem for society. So are they

hypocrites? I guess is one question. I am still learning and hope you can help

me in understanding. So maybe I am way off but the more I read the more I get

the feeling I am right. And this is just the stock agencies. I am reading about

other areas and find such a strange world I never knew exisited. What is it

with the market in the photography world that makes is all so strange I don't

    know. Maybe you can help.

  10. I suck at searching for what I want on the internet including on PN. I get

frustrated by looking through thousands of ten year old posts. So is their a

way to do a search and keep the search within a certain time period, like only

posts for the last six months or lets say only for a certain year or

    month/year? Thanks for your help.

P.S. I found the following site helpful in some ways for searching on the

    internet.
