1.
Thanks guys, but i did not say I was going to mix them - I said I was thinking about getting them...in place of hot flashes... perhaps that was not clear.

The are more for fill that I am asking, and I have decided on Hot Flashes with syncing...

tight budget, and yes, tight space. You start small, and build.

I wish there was a softbox for the flashes, bit I dont see any...so umbrella it is - and I also found a convertible one - bit still unsure about it until I see it in person.

My backdrop will be white, blown out. If needed, I will add gels. There will be 2 separate lights for that and placed (and setup) in a way that the light for the backdrop does not spill or wrap on subject.
Thanks! I appreciate ur comments.

  2.
Hi-

I am creating a IN-Home studio and will be using HotShoe flashes. Do you suggest I use an umbrella or softbox for portaits?

I assume I will want an umbrella for the larger (mid body and full length), but do you think I should get a softbox? or maybe one of the softboax's that look like an umbrella? (wrap around lights with the white towards the subject)

I am going to be making a DIY Beauty Dish for the key light-

All are slaves-

Thanks! I am also thinking about getting a small work light if I cant find one more flash for a continous light (side lighting) and for that I will use a DIY diffusser (empty cranvas frame and some either material ir shower curtain - or both removable for various uses)

thanks

  3.
It happened to me too-
The only bad thing was that I didnt have a contract. I ended up actually qouting a law about the First Admendment, and they backed off.

They were having a wedding, and the photog dropped out 2 days prior. I foudn them on CL and took a 3 hour train to the Hamptons. I was really excited - as you said UNTIL;

1 - Noone in party cared about even getting photo'd
2 - Found out it was the second wedding - for the same couple - within weeks of each other (weird...)
3 - The hubby wanted to watch football instead
4 - The lighting was horrid
5 - the only nice ppl were the old ones who couldnt push me around
6 - Never even let me eat in the 16 hour day
7 - paid me pennies - but i was willing to do for exposure
8 - LEFT ME IN THE RAIN WHILE I WAITED FOR THEM TO RUN TO LIMO (had a scene planned) and then when I finally said "why are you not getting in the car?" ANSWER: "Its not the Royce we ordered..." By then the moisture got in my camera and I had a 3 hour hold of drying - thank goodness it dried quickly-
9 - later find out they were BOTH right out of law school- which they lied to me about the profession
10 - wrote me askig for originals and money back
I waondered why they wanted originals if they hated them - and then they started saying stuff like ; "WORK FOR HIRE"
Thats when I knew they were law kids who were boasting their newly earned degree.
After qouting the FA - I never heard from them again.

Never give up anything, and never in your contract (I now use them...lol) give them a way out. Its like saying your bad before you show them your NOT!

Never admit defeat.

Godo luck next time, and use this to get yourself stronger.

  4.
I just used a lightsphere today in the store - after looking at it online for a verrryyy long time (way to long). I am so happy with the results!

Granted that the kid (my daughter) was only a foot from the wall (to close) here is how it turned out;

(test shot, not a glam shot..lol)

  5.
I dont have the part anymore. I moved form NYC to northern MO, and now in NE Kansas. All within 6 months. This move has not only broken the camera, but the tiny piece is gone -- I will try to find somehting online to show you what I mean...I thought I was pretty descriptive...

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/fuji_s100fs/fuji_s100fs_hotshoe.jpg

I found just what it looks like-- see the link above. Not sure why - but it wont work without it. (the external flash that is) but it WILL work on other cameras, and also on its on.

I ordered a cable, so I am hoping that solves it...here is to crossing my fingers :)

  6.
Hi - Thanks. I just actually saw that cord on Amazon. But they only had a 5 foot length - way to long to carry around...lol

I looked into getting it fixed - and noone will do it for less than 750.00 - and that includes the manafactuer. Its such a small peice - you would think some tim foil would work - I am assuming its a conductor - the part that came off. (very thin black metal over the hot point on hot shoe)

Very Very frustrating...

  7.
Hi-

While moving across the country, the movers have broken the hot-shoe on my camera. I have a Fuji S9100. The very tiny metal (very thin) plate was loode and eventually fell off.

The Sunpak Auto 383 still slides on, but the connection is now gone to the camera.

I havent tried to use it as a slave...and not sure if I can.

I am going to buy the Lighsphere (Fong), but useless if my camera has no flash..and my recent photos indoors are just horrible w/o a flash.

Can anyone tell me what kind of sync cord to get?
I am thinking like 4-6 inches? But are they universal?

Thanks!

  8. Use a good flash (with metering so you wont overexpose)

Have subjects (if you must have them in the shot) look interesting and smiling

If the window has a view, show it

    Use wide-angle to show more

    use tripod

draw the shades down, or 1/2 down to create a mood (see if the place would get some roman shades - about $10-25 per shade)

Can your camera can do bracketing for exposures to choose from?

light the fire for a dramatic setting (or even a night setting light - very romantic and cozy mood)

ask if you can re-arrange the furniture - even just for the shot - arrange a setting around a lit fire (with the 'fire cover' (lack of word there), open so you can get the flame outside the chain mesh fire cover

colors of rugs etc look flat, all these can help that - but some post-processing can help :)hope this helped a bit

  9. Would a polarizer help? I didn't read this carefully I bet, but are you film or digital?

I have shot in this type of setting also - most were overexposed, or just kinda hazy, due to the amount of light beyond. I was learning my new camera (Fuji S9100), and I found that the natural light, and the night mode were the best for my camera, and turning down the exposure. I had some good results. Although, I was using my husband as a model, and he is pretty tan, so it wasnt a white wedding dress either. Perhaps next time a friend, or 'best man' can hold a gold reflector, or white reflector to share some light on your subjects...a new use for the best man :)
