  1. Buy the Slik 700DX with the pan and tilt head. It is $129 at B&H, weighs 6.6 lbs and is the best bang for the buck. Very sturdy, and a monster. I have it and have no regrets. Capacity 14 lbs equipment.

I bought it considering that I will buy the 50-500mm too. Still a little wait but will have it soon :-)

  2. All my buying is through the net, and all received well. No problems so far, but even if you get a bad one because of transit good sellers take it back, of course you will have to pay the shipping back to them.

One of them (Siera Trading post) actually sent a pre-paid shipping sticker with the shipment in case I am not satisfied with the quality of the roduct to ship it back. I was really impressed on their confidence on the product and customer satisfaction strategy.

  3. Stick to the kit lenses till you actually find the need to go beyond their capacity. This you will understand after you get to know and actually use the camera to its capabilities. Read articles and books from your local library about the technical and technique side of photography. When you are through all this, then I beliveve you will better understand what you need for your kind of photography and what is in the market to suit that.

AND keep in otuch with this forum, all the above is and PN makes it happen.

Happy Shooting and welcome to Oly.

  4. I ordered a monopod when I got started and is not a good brand, but after some adjustments and overhauling, it worls good although a little heavy. It has a single til/pan head and I have found advantages like Alan says above. To keep it vertical and tilt the head when required, or also to have the monopod in a inclined angle but stable on the ground and tilt the head to keep the camera horizontal by pressing against the eyes/face for stabality. At long telephoto range I have got the % of sharp shots better with this technique. I hope it helps.

    Thanks,

  5. This is what I was shooting yesterday. E500 - 50-200/2.8-3.5, with ec14, manual

mode, with Sandisk extremme III 4Gb card. And when I wanted to switch to

continous shooting, the option was not accessible in the menu. I tried with A or S

priority and P mode but still not functional. Then I switched to Auto and the

    function was accessible.

Am I doing something wrong here. I didn't have the time to test it without ec14, but

thought I could get an answer here, if someone has gone through the same.

    Thanks.

  6. It helps me when I am out birding for almost a whole day with a telephoto weighing 4 lbs. I fix it with the monopod and when I am walking its on my shoulder attached to the monopod. It makes it easier to carry around. Also, long hand holding of long telephoto makes the hand tried and more shaky. My keeper pictures % have increased since I started using it. Also use it in outdoor festivals and social events.
  7. I agree with both of you. I put these 2 reasons to see what the experienced members have to say, as I am relatively new to PN.

As I read somewhere " There is no good or bad photograph, its just a different photograph" :-)

Overall like in all form of art, it depends on the viewer/audience. A peice of art (photograph, in our case) should appeal to the viewer in one way, usually their way of understanding it. A good piece of art will appeal universally and a lesser one to lesser people.

I am going too deep. Nice to hear from you guys, I admire your work. Thanks

  8. I have been observing that the anonymous raters are rating less on a photo while

the members (who's portfolio gives an idea that they know about photography) are

    rating the same photos higher.

I receive 6's from the members and the anonymous give 3-4 on the same one, and

of course they don't explain the reason too.

    2 reasons that I perceive :

    (1) - These anonymous raters are expert photographers and rate the photos

without reveling themselves or getting into the controversy of explaining as it

doesn't meet their criteria of a good photograph or is ordinary for them.

    (2) - These anonymous raters are beginners getting interested in photography and

rate the photo per their conception of a good photograph, which is diffrent than

that of a serious ametuer or pro.

Which one do you think is more close, or if you have another opinion.

  9. There are a few new features, but its not between E510 and E3 as was the speculation before the release.

I will be waiting for some tests before deciding on the upgrade from E500.

  10. A telecoverter and an extension tube is an extension put between the lens and the camera body.

A teleconverter extends the focal length of a lens by a factor (eg 1.4 or 2.0). So after putting a 2.0 telecoverter a lens which was 50 mm focal length will become 100 mm focal length i.e. it magnifies the focal length by the factor. This magnification comes with a loss of light or aperture or f-stop (whatever you want to call it). This loss of light depends on the quality of the teleconverter.

An extension tube is a simple extension without any elements, that distances the lens and the camera body. This changes the focal spot, and you can focus more closer than with only the lens. It is also a form of magnification factor, but on the image, not on the focal length

  11. Thanks Gerry, I will bring only the monopod then.

I am excited too, and I will surely have more time next time, which will include one of the other island, probably big island.

Any suggestions on what to see from you will be very helpful. I am just relying on the internet suggestions at the moment, which are waikkiki beach, pearl harbour museum, north shores and whatever I will learn about oahu when I reach there.

  12. Gentlemen,

I will be in Hawaii in first week of June. 5 nights in Oahu Island.

    I am taking E500, 14-54mm, 50-200mm, EC14, EX 25, cir. polariser. Questions.

    1) Should I take a slik 700DX too? Its heavy but I would take it if I will need it.

    2) Shoudl I take FL36 too. I will not shoot in night, will it be required for fill light.

    3) Anything else that you think I am missing.

    Thanks
