I'm starting to do more b/w images using the Nik Silver Effects

plug-in. Suggestions for improving the b/w attributes of this image

would be appreciated.

It would appeal more to me if you cropped only for the center section and eliminated the arch and foreground. Always nice to see creative "accidents".

I see the face and the line of white globes as competing subjects. Because the globes lead away from the face, this creates confusion (for me) rather than tension.

Very nice. I like the way you can see his eyes over the glasses.

There's a lot of empty blue sky.  Perhaps adding some clouds that imitate the roofs' shape would help.

Nice drama and positioning of the plane in the image.

This would have more impact if there were shadows on the buildings - early morning or late afternoon.

A shallow DOF blurring the background would work well with this image.

I'm having a problem finding a motivation for the image other than "I was there". There are several elements in this picture that could be the subject, but none is obvious: The prison wall on the right seems to function only to support the bridge which is cropped. The gondolas are near an interesting palace wall, but are too far away to see any detail. Since the light is flat, it doesn't help direct the eye.

Perhaps playing around with this in black and white with an emphasis on texture could produce more impact.  You should also try to sharpen the image.
