    hey donnie

this is an outstanding picture. the composition with the black background is quite superb. i don't even know what the creature is but it looks serenely interesting.

    hello glen

i imagine there is an ironworks close by or perhaps some underground iron reserve? the orange covering of the rocks look like rust. the lighting looks a little artificial but i like that artificiality. the light, as it has turned out is rather lovely.

there is very little movement in the composition. the aspect of the vehicle and the colour rendition is hardly interesting to make it a subject worth capturing. it is good to know when not to snap.

i really like your canine pictures and wish there were more in the portfolio. this is perhaps one of your best offerings. love the sadness. the ugliness of the claws seem to size up a sombre moment.

    hey sharon,

i expect this is the digitised negetive? isn't it surprising how interesting a little colour reversal can render something! i liked the colours.

    mahen,

i really like this. i have been trying to work out what it is that i like so much about the photograph but can't really pinpoint it. perhaps it is the rather sad forlorn expression on the face of the child. there is something beautifully innocent and honest even in his poverty ridden garb. perhaps it is the contrast between that sense of innocence and poverty that makes it so appealing.

compositionally this is very good but i personally would have preffered a little more sharpness on the face. the eyes and parts of the hair is sharp so i assume you had used the lens wide open, as the 100 asa fuji superia would necessitate. there appears to be slight discolouration towards the lower end of the picture. is the negetive faulty or the scanner was not quite calibrated correctly?

apart from those minor issues, i think this is quite excellent. so well done.

  1. hey ken,

this is a really lovely portrait. the expression is one of not knowing what to do when snapped. the tones feel natural too. if i do have a slight criticism that is to do with the hightlights on the skin. dark skin show up sweat or oily complexion a little more, so fill in flash or brighter light sources are perhaps a little more reflected than lighter skintones.

  2. there is a painting like quality about this composition. that in itself would make it wonderful to some and perhaps a little wonderful to others. i live the composition but something feels a little artificial about it. i can't pin point it but i know that it doesn't jump out of the page to me.
  3. hello israel

you are clearly someone who looks for quirky angles to make your pictures appear interesting. i think that works for a number of your pictures, including this one. how would an increase in contrast make the buildings appear? for me the sky and the buildings does not seem to go in hand in hand at present. the colours seem like a little too much of an uninteresting clash. perhaps less of the sky might be an interesting variation as well.

i really like this particular type of portraiture. the composition is good. you have been a little too severe with cropping in the right hand side. the full arm would have been nice or perhaps a really close crop to the arm on the left hand side.

the highlights are problematic to my eyes. this might well be praise by other viewers but i am finding the highlighting along the rim of the hat to be a little too overbearing.

    other than that lovely effort.

  4. this does have a painting like quality about it but for me the quality renders the work to be hung more in an inexpensive hotel than a modern art gallery. the contrast and the spate of colour is just a little over done for my taste. the thumbnail really drew me into it and the composition is excellent. however, the post processing is simply not to my taste.

this is saturated but somehow i rather like the saturation in this context. i think the deep colours add something to the polluted sense of being and how it colludes with the primary colours. very nice cropping too. the wideangle panorama is interesting.

    liv,

the reddishness creates an atmosphere that would either be liked or loathed. i think it is interesting but had a hard time trying to work out if this is a cast from street lighting or perhaps a camera/photoshop setting. the flowers are very important in this composition so i would recommend a monochrome with high contrast so they stand out a little more.

hi ronald, you have mastered the useage of fill in flash and this is a good example of such portraiture. your gallery is quite interesting in many respect. there is an element of stong men and the homoerotic. not sure if this intentional or perhaps accidental. of course, some will like this and others would look away.

there is also a moving image type quality to this picture. it feels cinematic in attitude. the black man is intent in his nouveau savage gaze. that adds a touch of intensity. i like that. it does look touched up but good touching up is always welcome. this is a job well done in my opinion.

  5. donna-marie, there is a timeless look about this composition. it could have been taken 80 years ago and the photo would perhaps have still looked the same. the sepia does it much justice. as the other commentator suggested, this is slightly overexposed. that is a very common problem in bright sunlight. the easy answer would be either to use an nd filter or perhaps meter for the darker spots in the composition. perhaps two stop exposure compensation would have made it a little more even.

excellent metering to avoid the highlights. the context is very important to this picture and there is an element of humour summed up by the adult's smiling glance looking downwards and sideways to the child. well thought of composition indeed. well done sir.
