  1. Hey, welcome to KY. I have lived and shoot here all my life and would be happy to clue you in to a few places. For landscapes Red River Gorge is hard to beat. Auxier Ridge, Rock Bridge Trail, Double Arch, Sky Bridge would be great places to start. In the spring there are lots of falls near the Cumberland Falls State Park. Find Dog Slaughter Falls, Bark Camp Creek, and Van Hooke Falls in the Area. For wildlife I like Hensley Settlement in Cimberland Gap NHP and the are a lot of Black Bears around Kingdom Come SP, but I have never seem them (seem to be the only one). Big South Fork is nice also, hike the river a ways starting at Blue Heron. This should keep you busy for a while! Have a look at my website for some samples, www.southernaccentphotography.com
  2. I have an Olymmpus P-10 printer that I just bought to make my life a little

easier printing borderless prints and I am having some problems. It will not

print the full frame and wants to enlarge the image and then crop it to fit the

paper. It looks like the 4x6 print was enlarged to 6x8 and then cropped and

printed on 4x6. Any ideas? I also tried it with microsoft print wizard and it

did the same thing. I am setting the print size to 4x6 at 300dpi, tried most of

the setting I could find on the print driver and no luck. Olympus says its not

their problem that it is a software issue. Anyone else have this trouble?

  3. THanks guys for the great answers, sounds like BW's is the place for me, don't like the big lakes at all with my canoe, gets pretty boring quick. THats what my cabin cruiser is for! Anyways, I will use this advice to now plan my trip!
  4. Looking to do a great canoe trip over a few (3-4) days in the

backcoutry. Have done SE swamps (it was a blast, right Gloria?!) but

now thinking Boudary Waters or Voyagers kinda trip in late

summer/early fall. Want landscapes, lots of fog, and great light.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  5. Have to be in Beckley doing a shoot for a hospital week of April 18th

and was wanting to spend a day doing some nature shooting maybe around

the New River Gorge or something. Any suggestions on where to go?

    Wildflowers, waterfalls, landscapes, etc?

    Kenny

  6. The 17-40 would be a great place to start. I have one and use it on a 20D and 1D from time to time, but mostly when I shoot landscapes i shoot medium format film still. WHen you can afford it add the 70-200 f/4 and you will be set for 95% of what the world throws at you. Its amazing how you can manage to get great pics when the light is good and the landscape is nice with whatever lens you have...

  7. who offers the best quality/turn around/price for medium runs of dvd

pressing? Need 5-10K runs of about 3 dvds and never had to deal in

    this volume before. Thanks, Kenny

  8. Man you better be careful, I would not risk my sight on some of these suggestions. Welding goggles is the only safe way (or some like it)to look at the sun. Stopping down the lens would not make it safe IMO. The radiation would still be sent through the camera. Geeeezzzz, you people better be careful giving info out like this,, could really do damage to someone.
  9. May want to check into Cumberland Island, a wonderful place managed by the National Park Service. I try to go there at least once a year, and thinking about taking my boat there about that time of year, maybe we will see ya! Also there is the st augustine alligator farm in northern FLA that is really cool, lots of birds.
  10. Time of year would depend too. March the deserts of UT and AZ are very nice, April here in the Southern Appalachians (no one said much about the east) are pretty hard to beat. In June places like Roan Mtn TN/NC are just stunning, in the fall you can't beat the Telluride/Aspen areas of CO, unless maybe its the White Mtns of NH.....I think if I had only one trip per year it would be CO.
  11. I will be in Telluride late Sept/early Oct chasing the aspens and

want to also do a little mountain biking. What I plan do to is

shoot early morn light somewhere up high and maybe even camp and

then let my buddy take the truck off the mountain while I ride some

single track off the hill. Any ideas of some good places to do

both? The perfect solution would be to find a nice peak with 20-30

miles of single track back to Telluride.

  12. Kent- I don't think that the Bronica had all the accessories that the mamaiya offers nor the lens lineup best I can remember. Besides it is now an orphaned Also is it not leaf shutter? Great for weddings, but added weight and slower lenses in the field and also less reliable.

Mark-on paper the weights seem to be not that big of a deal, but you start adding a couple of ounces here, half pound there and before you know it the thing is pretty heavy. The lenses are much heavier not to mention bulky. I backpack and ounces matter. Also the Pentax does not have backs, which I like to have that option.

  13. I wonder why no one has brought up the Mamiya 645? The newer ones have interchangable backs unlike the Pentax models and the lenses are great and much less expensive than Blads and much more flexable. The weight it also much less than the 6x7 slrs and the negative size is almost 300% larger than 35mm. To me its really the only camera that makes sense if you are having to hike any distance at all and want medium format, nothing else really has all the options and features a good nature camera should have.
  14. I have to spend the night in Pipestem State Park in WV. I get an

evening shot and a morning then the rest of the time I am going to

be busy. I have been to Babcock and may return. WOuld not mind a

nice sunrise location over the New River. Any suggestions?

  15. I have really nice printers for large prints, but I am needing one

now to do 4x6 borderless as I am getting tired of cutting and my HP

deesignjet 130 won't print borderless. Inkjet or dye sub would be

fine. I need (in this order)-great print quailty, archivial, fast,

and economical to print. I like the Canons, but don't seem to be

too archivial. Epson is kinda costly to operate for an inkjet,

whats the best all around printer for this?

  16. I just got a Pano dvx 100a and like it pretty well and getting some

good footage for a project, but soon I may out grow the audio part

of the camera (currently shooting more scenic support footage) and

was wondering what is out there on a budget. I know Panasonic makes

a mic for it for around 150 I think, is that the best way to go?

Don't really want to drop $600-800 on the top of the line stuff just

yet. ANy suggestions? BTW, that camera has xlr inputs that I think

can phantom power or not, and I am not sure what all that means,

    lol.

  17. One of my favorite reasons for doing photography is that it gets me out and into locations that I might not see otherwise. When I get there looking for images makes me get more tuned in to the surroundings and appreciate it that much more. I love composing through the camera, seeing the interesting and beautiful from different perspectives and angles. Even if I ran out of film I would imagine I would go nuts and run around setting up shots in my viewfinder and pressing the shutter!!!!! Something would have to occupy your time between building a trap for wild game and sweeping out the cave. Is that a real photographer or what, lol?
  18. There are many good papers out there that are double sided. Epson Enhanced Matt is one. I don't think it really matters as to who is seeing the prints, but it would be travel magazine art directors mainly. The printing will be in small runs, maybe 20-50 at a time so inkjet is the only practial way. I know what I want to do and how to do it, please just help me answer the question, what do most people like, this is just a survey.
  19. I am wanting to print out some new promo pieces to send out to my

prospective customers and I was wondering what would be the favorite

flavor of paper for something like that. Glossy has the most impact

and "wow" factor maybe, but I will be sending them to art directors

and thought they might appreciate matte more and it would stand up

to handling better, maybe? What would be a good universal paper

that everyone would like? Has to print on both sides, brand is not

so importaint as surface because I will have to compromise there as

it will be an odd size and will have a limited selection. Thanks in

    advance.

  20. I think there is two totally different objectives here and the mindset between photography is different. I don't see one replacing the other at all. What makes a good moving image is not the same as what may make a good still, at least I don't think so. Sure it will happen some of the time, but not all of the time, even if the technology allows it. When you are doing stills you are freezing a moment in time, but with video it is just the opposite, right? Its hard to serve two masters!
