All fair points. I believe I was on my way back toward Interior SD, so I was heading East, most of my shooting already done. Anything that was interesting at this point (about 9pm) had this kind of light. I just happened to come around a corner in the road and found this area. I liked how the light was highlighting the one face of the rock. Too tired to do a full study, so I shot off a few in Program mode (thus the f/4). Thanks for the input and for looking.

I would agree that it's got a lot going for it, but seems a bit understated. Would like to see it snap, crackle and pop a bit more;-) Congrats!

Awesome! Love the texture you captured in the dunes! Congrats!

Outstanding! I love the interplay between the shapes and lines. Great colors. Awesome detail and clarity. Masterful composition. Congrats!

A fine image! Interesting composition. Great colors and textures.

A few sensor dust spots are readily apparent. Still, wonderful composition and colors. Congrats!

Great shot. Very dramatic! Congrats:-)

Thanks for your comments:-)

I very much like the tonal gradations, as well as the linear patterns. Composition is outstanding. Congrats!

Had to choose between a larger view or cropping to focus on the linear
patterns and colors. What do you think? Thanks for your comments:-)

Yes, while on my trip I never took the Cokin filter holder off the lens, and it always had the two grad ND filters and one warming filter installed. This is already warmed up, but I'll tweak the SAT and repost.

Here's another from the South Dakota Badlands!

Sorry for the bigger image size in Larger view. It seemed if I brought it down to 1024 wide, I lost too much detail in the image.
I look forward to your comments:-)

Stephan, I posted another version of the image (see image 6175119 in my "Road to Yellowstone" gallery). I would say I "over-cooked" this image with levels and shadow/highlight in Photoshop. The other image is much closer to the look of the early time of day (5:57 AM) and should be a better representative of side-lighthing (the sun would be coming up off the left side of the frame).
Chris, it does look inviting doesn't it! However, if memory serves me correctly, what looks like nice green grass is really something a bit more akin to deep rough. You'd be trying to get outta there all day! ;-)

Much closer to the original image which was taken at 5:57 AM. I way over-cooked my first attempt. This image better reveals the time of day and the effect of the rising sun, which would be off the left side of the frame.

Thanks Michael, bumped a bit;-)

I think I used up all the descriptors in commenting on your previous shot! ;-) Again, marvelous foreground. The texture and colors are sooo fascinating. And the sky is awesome! How does lighting get any more interesting than this? Congrats.

I'm really enjoying the colors and textures of the boulders in the foreground. And I like how the center channel between the rocks pulls my attention toward the the distant horizon. The clouds are great. And the whole shot is very moody. Wonderful!

I very much enjoy the flow of the composition (logs and rocks), and the flow of the water due to a slower shutter speed ties into the comp very nicely. Congrats!

Wonderful composition. I very much enjoy the colors and textures. And the bright light makes the image, both in terms of highlighting the ladder and the clear implication that there is a light at the end of the ladder;-)
