    Binalong Sunset

          13

Jef has it right, this is a classy image. It is such a simple, elegant, and straightforward sunset image and yet there is not a thing to complain about or pick at.

I love the peachy lichens on the rocks mirroring the shape of the peach hued clouds above. Simply divine.

I like the various textures here. The toning and the raw edges also fit nicely into the whole composition along with the shallow DOF and the simple square composition.

This would make a very lovely large, matte print for someone's home.

Impressively ice-bound landscape here. I like juxtaposition of the mountains in shadow and the expanse of ice and snow brightly lit by the sun.

Julian, Bengt, and Bobby, thank you for your thoughts.

Bengt, you're right I think. This has a certain mood/atmosphere that the colour lacks. It is almost too pretty in colour to really capture the industrial mood.

    Thanks again.

  1. Beautiful! I love the intimacy of the composition here – I feel right in here with the rock and clouds. The mist has been very well presented and the whole scene feels appropriately wet and dreary while still being rich and full of colour and texture. Nicely done.

I can see what Gary is saying and do agree that a touch less magenta would probably be an improvement from my end too.

Thanks Ray. This isn't far from Eureka either. Just over the border at Natural Bridges OR.

I just posted my horizontal as well (which might be my preference).

You know, I would have killed for a bit more of this dreariness when I actually got to Eureka! It would have been better then the unending sunshine that I got when I was in the Redwoods.

I agree with your assessment. The snow is worse than the crop (by far).

I'd probably tackle the cloning job though. It certainly seems like it would be possible to do it and to do it seamlessly.

Although, really, this is very, very lovely as it stands.

Matthew, thanks – especially for the comment about the cloud placement. I was quite happy about that myself.

Gordon, thank you so much. You've gone away and returned as a poet! I'm glad that the flow and breeze come through here.

Very pleasing minimalism indeed! I love how you've kept the fence from ever breaching the horizon line – that small detail is so important here. The diagonal of the slope juxtaposed with the strong dark of the tree-trunk is quite compelling compositionally and seems to perfectly fit the square format here.

I might try and clean up the noise/grain in the sky and also try and even out the gradient there. The dark grey of the upper left ends quite abruptly – I'd favour a smoother transition.

Overall, a very nice and accomplished image. It reminds me of some of Michael Kenna's Hokkaido images – not a bad thing at all.

Very pretty. The warmth of the sky colour nicely connects with the stone(?) section of the building. The building in the reflection also carries on this plethora of warm tones. These warm colours are then nicely balanced against all the steel, glass and reflections – this makes such an effective image.

    Nice photo!

    Trees

I enjoy the repetition of form here – that repetition allows the entire forest to form a cohesive subject within the photo. I like how the whole slope of forest forms the centerpiece of the composition with a nice diagonal. The square format fits the simple composition and the circular vignette offers a delightful counter point.

The faint magenta of the trees is a little odd, though. I'm not sure that I dislike it; but, I don't quite appreciate its purpose. I think this would be nicer either fully B&W or fully toned. The way the magenta falls off where the vignette is strongest seems particularly concerning.

    Diagonal fence

I like this very much indeed. The composition is dynamic and engaging and the overall tonalities are very well handled. The brooding sky certainly adds a lot here.

In some ways I quite like how the foreground fence has remained distinct from the background. But, I still can't help but wonder if the foreground is too disjointed from the rest of the image? Maybe a slightly lower perspective would have shrunk the amount of mid-ground? This is still a great photo as it stands; but, I'd love to a version with a bit less of the mid-ground snow.
