Look at the security. Windows 7 security is not always evident.

Hi Jay, I. was using a 580 II on each camera. There is no AF assist light on any of the images, this is not the problem.
-

@Marcus, Thanks for that explanation. And yes, both cameras showed the same problem and it was in fact more obvious when more red light was in the frame.
@Robin, I had a similar thought but in the opposite direction. Since the AF Assist beam is red, if everything the AF system sees is bathed in red light, doesn't that would cause difficulty?
The pictures done in a area where there was more white light are all OK!

I photographed an event last saturday with my 1DMKIII and 5DMKII. The walls of the room were covered in white drapes, and strips of red LEDs were lighting from the ground up, right in front of the drapes.
I noticed a much higher rate of out of focus images. Any one knows if the red LEDs could be responsible?
TIA

to DL Anderson, Looks like a Black Phoebe (Flycatcher). He's a resident of Northern California and Southwestern U.S.

Although both may fit both lens, their shape are quite different and are not interchangeable because of the different angle of view. the EW-83J is a compromise for a Zoom while the EW-83DII was made for and fits the 24mm prime perfectly.

Yash,
The redish glow above the top focus point is actually in the viewfinder when the level of light in the scene is weak. It is just
a reflection of the active focus point on the screen and as nothing to do with AF assist beam which requieres an external
flash or an STE2. As a matter of fact it appears with or without a flash present. After many test, it appears that this
behaviour is also present with the center focus point but to a lesser extent on my camera. In good light, it is barely visible
if at all on my camera.

I'm kind of like Louis and Mark.
I move between a 50D, 5DMK2, 1DMK3. Kind of because I think of them as different tools for different purposes just like a carpenter as more than one hammer depending on the job. The all have their qualities and faults. And I'm happy with it all.

Wow! Thanks for the link.

If your going for color accuracy rather than artistic desire than read on...
I often use a x-rite Passport Colorchecker. Comes with software to correctly restore colours in post. You include the Color reference target in one picture of your set every time the light changes somewhat dramatically. Visit xritephoto.com for details.

Craig, James, Robin, Thanks for your reply. I guess we'll see if this is a real problem with time.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Hi every one. I just got my EF 40mm f/2,8 STM and I just love it.
There's this one thing though that I miss on my EOS bodies that I have on my Oly E-3.
The RESET LENS function: When set to ON, this resets the focus of the lens to infinity each time the power is turned off.

Because the EF 40mm f/2,8 STM focus ring isn't active once the lens is off the camera body, you can't reset it to infinity so that the extended part of the lens does not go back inside the lens body. So you always have to think of pressing the MF button (because doesn't work in AF mode) and than turning the focus ring to infinity before removing the lens. And i'm always afraid this behavior could eventually damage the lens if the extended part (8,13mm) is knocked against something if I forget to do so.
Canon themselves say that close up lens cannot be used on this lens because "The end of the lens will become heavy, causing the focus to become unstable". So my take is that this extended portion is rather fragile.
What do you think?

If you can get the 5D MK II kit, this one comes with the 24-105 at a cost of around $2,699.00 for the kit and $2,079.00 for the body only, the lens itself is about $1,149.00. That kit would be a good saving. The 24-105 is a good walk around lens for a Full Frame body and this is one of my preferred lens for that type of photography when I go out and need a light kit.

If you turn on the camera with only one card in it, it will become your new default card. This behavior is the same as the 1D series. Formating the CF card does not tell the camera you want to use it as your default. Look at your manual, it says how to change the default card. But again, if you turn on the camera with only one card in it, it will become your new default card.

I carry the exact same kit, Strap, Camera with grip, Lens, and tried it also with the 1D MK III. No problem. A lot more comfortable if you use the Tripod Mount of the lens. Otherwise, if you use the camera's tripod Mount you'll end up with a bruised leg.

Only the 1D series were built to be able to AF over f/5.6. That is until the 1DX which does not. There is a trick were you can put tape over the 1.4 and 2X pins so that the camera does not know your past f/5.6 but of course the AF struggles. Canon choose not to have their camera's AF misbehave and prevented it for all other camera in firmware.

Thanks for this real user review. Very helpful. I will try it on my 5D MKii the next time I go to my local camera store.
"its mount is much tighter than pretty much on any other lenses I own"
Could be from the fact that its very low weight and its minimal length produces much less lever effect on the mount. And of course, the mount is also brand new.

Beautiful photography. I only own the 5D Km II so no answer from me but you're right "really pushes the possibility".

I thought DSLR Battery Grip where invented partially for this reason.

Canon software includes tools to remove vignetting from you pictures , same with lens distortion, all based on the Canon lens used.
