  1. Can you guys help me out with the color profile process? I read up on it but there are a couple questions I have that are unanswered. So,

walking threw the process let me know if I am doing this correctly. I have placed the ICC files in my "profiles" folder. I open photoshop,

open image, choose view/proof set up/custom. In dialog box I select icc I want to apply but here is where I get confused. What di I do with

the boxes "preserve RGB numbers", "black point compensation", "simulate paper color", and "simulate black ink"? What do these do and

which ones do I need to pay attention to? Once I apply these settings I adjust the color and contrast till the image looks good.

Now, when I save I have another question. In the save dialog box there is a check box for "embed color profile Adobe RGS 1998". Do I

check this? If not, is the image going to be saved with the color profile settings I applied to it earlier? I am saving it as a TIFF and i use a

MAC if that is important. I appreciate the help.

    Thanks

  2. I am new to using printer profiles. I print through Costco and they do some awesome prints. They offer the ICC file for more accurate

printing. I read the instructions and it says to load it in photoshop and adjust the image once the profile has been applied. But what about if

I am processing a few hundred RAW images in Lightroom? Can I apply the profile in lightroom and adjust accordingly? What about applying

the profile to my computer monitor and now all my images would be viewed as they would be printed on that particular printer correct? So if

I adjusted the images to look correct and saved them would they print as seen on my monitor? I am using MAC OSX by the way. I would

appreciate any help you all might be able to offer.

    Thanks

  3. I have noticed in alot of old antique stores have wood large format cameras sitting on the shelf. Are these just for

show or do some of them actually work? I am not asking you all directly since I understand you would not have an

answer for that. What I am asking is if there is a market for people who buy their large format camera's in antique

stores? Now that I am educated on what a large formatt looks like and does, I can remember seeing them in the

antique stores. Have any of you ever purchased one of these?

  4. I live in Southern California and I wanted to know if any of you experienced large format photographers in the area

would be willin to take an hour of their time to show me hands on what Large Format is about and even capture a

shot. I have been very interested in purchasing a camera and setting my digital down for a while. Before I spend alot

of money on the camera, I would like to sit down with one of you guys for a bit and get an understanding of what it

takes! I will purchase film for our lesson as well as some extra to repay you for your time. Would anyone be

interested in working with me on this?

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

  5. Has anyone been upstate NY in the last couple days? Can you give me a color report or a picture? In mt desert right now but it is patchy and most has blown down. Moving on tomorrow. Going south a bit but not sure where after that. Maybe up state NY?
  6. I am a little confused. I was told that the colors were so bright and popping this year yet everywhere I have gone with the exception of Moose Head Lake have been muted colors. I have hit the lower 3/4 of vermont, cut across New Hampshire on hwy 2 into Maine where I stayed in rangeley. Then off to Moose head lake and down to Bangor. So here is what I found. Vermont had more forest that was solid color but all muted, New Hampshire was the same but I did not spend much time there. Rangeley Maine was past peak and windy. Between Rangeley and Moose Head Lake had some nice vibrant color but very patchy. Moose Head was past peak but the few trees that still had color were amazingly bright. I was told by a local to head down to Bangor or Acadia, so I hit Bangor and it had no color. Still early. I then called a foliage spotter in Acadia and he said it was still too early for color there. Now I am in Farmington but it is dark so I cant tell you how the color is. And thats my findings. I really expected to find these spectacular colors everywhere peak was at but I have to say I am not too impressed. Am I just going to the wrong places? Have any of you guys had luck with good vibrant reds and oranges? Let me know, I am here for 7 more days and am not sure which way to drive next. Sorry this post was so long guys! All your input has been very helpfull.
  7. Today I drove up from Mass to Chester VT. There is heave color in most areas like woodstock and ludlow but there is not alot of bright color. It looks muted. Tomorrow I am heading up towards Montpelier and they say it is peaking there. I hope there is some reds. Not many reds in the lower half of VT. Has anyone made it to Chocorua pond, NH yet tis year? How is it?
  8. I have been hearing alot of people mention they use large format camera's for landscape photography. I jumped in

this forum and read a bunch of threads but did not find all the answers. I think this thread will help alot of newbee's.

I have never used a large farmat camera. I shoot full frame digital. Being a landscape photographer, what can I benifit

from using a full frame camera? Do I need to develope the images in a darkroom like 35mm film? Is this a very

expensive process? What type of camera is best for landscape? What size can I enlarge a image to if I shoot with a

4x5? 5x7? 8x10? Does the size have an effect on the final output print size? Is it difficult to use a large format

camera? What can I do with a large format camera that I can not do with my digital Canon 5D? I am sorry for all the

questions but I love a challenge and large format looks like an interesting one. I could go buy a book and spend a

week reading it or I can ask all you folks who use these camera's everyday and I'll get answers in a matter of

    minutes!

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

  9. Roman, I think the thread your speaking of is one where I asked for routes for my use in the new england area. This thread

was intended for anyone, anywhere to post there favorite spot for everyone's use. I myself will be going to the new england

area this fall but I know alot of people may want to go to other parts of the world or just like to see what different areas are

    like in fall.

  10. Douglas, Your the second person who has recommended the John Shaw book to the in the last couple days. Must be a good one. I have also been recommended "Light: Science & Magic". Anyone read that one?
  11. How does one go about finding a mentor for landscape photography? I have become more and more interested in landscape photography

and I would like to find a good mentor. I did this with weddings and I found a great person who taught me tons of stuff. As for landscape

photography, I dont know where to look. Are there local clubs in southern california for landscape photographers? Any advice will be greatly

    appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

  12. I am not looking for a particular spot. I just want people to share their favorite spot. I already know alot about where fall is best but I thought it would be nice for people to be able to see other people's results from their spot and maybe they might go there one day.
  13. What's your favorite fall photo spot? Be specific if possible so those who wish to check it out can find it easily online or on a map. If

possible post up one of your better shots in this location. I think this thread will produce alot of great shots as well as new adventures for

fall photographers all over the US. This year will be my first fall taking landscape pictures so I'm sorry i do not have any places to offer.

From images I have seen, i think a place called Beckoning Path, NY is an awesome place.

    Thanks,

    Jimmy

  14. Sorry, I dont know how to make the link a hyperlink. If anyone can help out I'd appreciate it. I would copy and paste the

picture but I think that is considered stealing it.

  15. I am inspires by a photographer named Tim Wolcott who shoots nature photography. He does alot of fall foliage work. I cant get over how

bright and flawless his images are. I have to ask you all how he accomplishes shots like the one linked below. Does he use special filters

or camera's? Is this a product of manipulation in photoshop? Or is this just a image straight out of the camera that was at the right place at

the right time? See linked image below and any I would appreciate suggestions on how we can produce great images like this? http://www.timothywolcott.com/landscapes/portfolio-06/graphics/photos/landscape_tim_wolcott_08.jpg

  16. Shun,

You mind if I email you with a few questions? To All, I already have learned when to get there. I followed all the foliage reports last year and studied alot about what changes the leaves. I also learned that you can call any of the foliage spotters and they are more than happy to tell you what stage the leaves are in and what the trend seems to be for that year. My struggle is knowing where to go, How to set up my camera to get quality shots, time of day, stuff like that. I am kinda looking for a mentor who has accomplished great shots and pick his or her brain.

  17. I wanted to shoot the fall colors last year but I was not prepared in time. This year I want to be sure I am ready when the time comes. I live

in southern california so it is hard to get practice or to know where I need to be when the leaves change on the east coast. I need a mentor!

Someone who has experience shooting fall foliage in the new england states. Anyone out there willing to take a few minutes to help me

out? I would really appreciate it. I would also like to find someone to meet up with this fall out in the field and maybe shoot for a day to help

me better understand shooting foliage. Looking forward to hearing back from you guys!

    Thanks,

    Jimmy
