  1. from p 270 in the manual ❚❚ Restoring Default Settings To restore default settings, highlight a bank in the Shooting menu bank menu and press O (Q). A confirmation dialog will be displayed; highlight Yes and press J to restore default settings for the selected bank. See page 405 for a list of default settings.
  2. green button reset did not solve my problem top item in two diffferent menus (reset) did the trick but not much hope for this fix for your weird AF trouble
  3. It's worth a try to do the menu reset/s to factory defaults. I recently had a weird Aperture setting problem on some lenses traced back to an odd menu setting ("aperture on/ring"). Otherwise sounds like the phase detection focus has gone kaput.
  4. I've got some crappy lenses. But they are all trustworthy.
  5. I follow another dozen photo / Nikon forums and this thread is on all of them. Lots of information, mostly conflicting.
  6. Get one ot these used for under $100 SIGMA AF 24MM F/2.8 SUPER WIDE II I've got one (replaced it after I dropped my other one 10 years ago). it is as sharp as any of my many other lenses, even the DX 35 G and 50mm Nikkors ------------ a little slower (and it zooms !) but it never leaves one of my camera bodies: Tokina 12-28mm f/4 under $300 used if you can find it
  7. are there still a lot of 'measurebaters' on this forum still ? I've been inactive for many years...
  8. Brett, thanks that explains the details perfectly on these new DSL cameras
  9. I would like to get an understanding of the high-tech things that came together to make mirrorless dslr's possible. Seems to have been a long time coming even though cheap point and shoot cameras had electronic shutters and video capability for a long time now. Lots of benefits to the camera maker by eliminating many moving parts. But there must have been technical and financial hurdles to resolve. Any links about these issues and how they were resolved would be great.
  10. I've got the early, not VR II, Nikon 18-200 VR It's fashionable to bash it - it is a lot better than the bashes acknowledge
  11. Only my D100 requires AC power to clean the mirror. All other Nikons I've had, and that is a lot, just needed a charged battery.
  12. I did not look at the options, just want to chime in and say be sure whatever you buy has VR. That is pure magic for me. Recently sold my 18-105 and kept my 18-200 after extensive testing and fiddling. It was a hard decision. Really came down to a coin toss.
  13. Here's the good news, I've had both those cameras. The bad news i I don't remember. Never had any trouble with the D200 using 8GB cards - I do remember that. Nikon | Download Center
  14. It is a pretty horrifying thing, getting one stuck in backwards with only a tiny bit left to grab onto. I could not do that if I tried.
  15. Funny thing is, unlike super zooms which give a specified range of F stop vs. focal length, ,the advertised F stop of the macro lens stays constant. Which is technically OK but don't count on it for calculating exposure when focusing close. Extending that front element group really knocks down the light available back at the focal plane.
  16. Hey, it could be worse... shoots several frames per second if you want it to
  17. One of the best bang for the buck lenses these days is a used 18-105. Under $150 in most places. Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens I've got several lenses that cover some or most of this range but keep going to it for walk around.
  18. MPB lists shutter count. Don't know about MPB, but you can send stuff back to KEH after a test run in your own hands.
  19. On the NEF's - you are looking at the embedded jpg
  20. The H and L's, if you interpolate to iso's, will be approximate iso values.
  21. Due to some trades last year, I got the Nikon 18-105 and long ago got the 18-200, love them both but good sense says sell one. Going to flip a coin. Maybe I'm just not picky but the IQ on both looks great to my eyes.
  22. I've rarely seen a street photo collection without an umbrella.
  23. 7100 and 7200's are getting cheaper by the day due to the new one Nikon released, I'm about ready to trade up, but still plan to stay with dated Nikons
