Here is a good example of why primes let you down sometimes. I was as

far back as I could go and still missed her foot. I had some extra

space on the right which would have been enough to include the foot,

but the action was so fast (and I had to jump out of the way right

after this frame) I missed it.

I love the fact that this gym had an overhead track. I got some

pretty good shots up there, but I knew the paper wouldn't use many

from that angle so I didn't stay long. The light was pretty good

    there. ISO 1600, f/2.8-3.2, 1/400th. I say pretty good, I'm used to

shooting in a gym that is ISO 3200, 1/320th, f/2.8.....so yeah,

pretty good here. Thanks for any comments.

I was lucky enough to capture this during a freethrow. It has the

feel of him being the only one on the court. None of this image was

cropped out. I was holding the camera low to try and get a cool

rebound shot. This was my test shot. What do you think?

Hi Shay. Yeah I kind of feel like you about this portrait. I don't see any hard light. I should have lit her eye though. This was an "in between shots", shot. She was laughing at a joke I told and she had her eyes closed in this moment. I like it. I feel like it shows off some of her personality. She turned her head right before this so I couldn't reposition the light to light her eye. I would've lost that moment if I had tried.

Kirt Winter: What an honor to have you comment on one of my photos. I'm a fan of yours. I remember asking you questions about a baseball shot of yours almost 2 years ago. Thanks for stopping by....I agree with everything you said about this one. I've only been shooting basketball for a month. I'm getting better but it is very hard to get everything right. The action is so fast. I remember you told me to practice looking through the camera with my right eye and following the action with my left. I've been doing that and it has really helped me get more keepers. My first basketball shoot a month ago produced 2-3 keepers out of 75. Now I'm up to maybe 50 out of 150. Thanks again for stopping. Take care.

Another shot of my step daughter before winning a regional beauty

pageant. She's off to state now! This is a simple one light setup.

    Any comments appreciated.

This is a quick one light setup before my stepdaughter's beauty

pageant. She won and gets to represent our region in the KY state

    pageant.

Alot of people don't like shots with arms in the way. I do! I think

it adds an extra element to have the focus on one eye looking out

over the arm. That's just my take on it take it for what it's worth.

    Thanks for looking.

I really don't like to use flash. The gym I shot at Tuesday was so dark I thought that I would try a few with flash. I was only getting 1/320th, at f/2.8, and iso 3200. That is very dark. I didn't like the flash look so I just got what few shots I could without. Noise is not an issue when these are printed in the paper. ISO 3200 doesn't bother me, but the 1/320th part does. The action has to be frozen. I don't know how your mark3 handles focusing at larger than f/2.8, but my 40D doesn't like me shooting at f/1.8. The focus is ok at 2.8 but if I go any larger, the auto focus is slow and I get alot of back focus on the walls in the back of the gym. You have the option to go to iso 6400 without degrading the image too bad. I don't think there is any HS gym in the country that is darker than f/2.8 at 6400. As long as you can get 1/400th, you'll be fine. Don't be afraid of ISO 6400 to get a blur free shot.
  1. I have found that I cut off alot of body parts using primes. I shoot b-ball with a 50mm, and the action is so fast I miss alot. I have started shooting while looking through the viewfinder with my right eye and following the action with my left. It takes alot of getting used to, but my keeper rate has at least doubled maybe tripled. Also, Will, learn how to use the back "auto focus on" button and use your shutter button only for tripping the shutter and you will notice a big difference in "in focus" shots for sports. That takes some getting used to also.

That guy makes that face with every layup. I have alot of pictures of him. These gyms I have to shoot in are so dark! It doesn't matter how much you pump up the ISO, the eyes are still dark because of the lights above them. I've tried using a little fill flash from my speedlight, but I don't like to. Did you shoot last night?

Thanks alot. Hey Kenny how are you? You probably recognize where this was taken don't ya? I was in Scottsville Tuesday night shooting these games. Basketball is pretty hard to shoot. I've only been doing it for a month so I have alot left to learn. I'm actually getting paid to do it though. (News Democrat and Leader in Russellville.)
