Thanks again,
Bill, I wish I had a store in the area that had a 5D but all we have in a 100 mile radius is a Wolf Camera and all they keep in stock is the Rebels and 20/30D.
Will, now that you mention it I do wish I had better noise reduction at higher ISO's. The wedding I shot last week was the first I've shot yet that didn't allow flash so I had to bump my 20D up to 1600 to get a reasonable shutter speed with my 70-200 2.8 IS. So if the 5D is better in that aspect alone I can see it being worth the extra cash. So thank you Will for chimming in there buddy! That may have just been the deciding factor for me.

Thanks everyone who has left a responce. I really appreciater your time in helping me in my decision.
Dan,
I'm happy with the 20D in general. The layout and controls are very easy to use and understand. The autofocus could be a little better in my opinion. Since I've never shot with a 5D before I didn't know a whole lot about the autofocus compaired to the 20d. I did read where the 5d has 9 focus points and 6 invisible points in the spot metering circle. I didn't know if that made a HUGE difference or not. I do shoot some weddings and the 70-200 2.8 IS I use has proved itself over and over again with the 20d.
I guess in the long run I'm willing to wait a few months to get a better equiped camera if it'll make my job a little easier. And when I say "easier" I guess I mean less stressful when shooting an important event like a wedding or photoshoot. But if there's not much of a difference in performance then I'd rather just purchase a 30D and be done with it.
Thanks again!

Thanks David for your reply.
1. I've only used the on camera flash on my 20D maybe twice since I've owned it. I use my 550ex if I need flash.
2. I currently own the Canon 17-40 f/4L, 50f/1.4, and the 70-200 2.8 IS.
Thanks for the link!

I'm in a situation where I'm deciding between a 5D or 30D. I've been shooting
with a 20D since May of last year. Fantastic camera body. Since I'm really
starting to get a lot of clients I was wondering if the 5D would make my job
any "easier" or would the 30D be just as good? I have the money at the moment
to purchase the 30D but would have to save for another month or two to be able
to pick up that 5D. I know a lot of the members here really praise the 5D and
the 12mp file size seems like a great upgrade from 8mp. I really love my 20D
and have become very familier with the controls and layout but I'm kinda up in
the air as to which I should buy.
ANY help or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I've read up on both
cameras through here on pnet and a few other sites. I'm just looking for
responses from people who have used both camera bodies and why they would
choose one over the other. I shoot all kinds of subjects from actors headshots
to landscapes. I'm looking to start into fashion soon.
Thanks so much again for your help and time! I've learned so much over the past
year from this website alone that the money I spent to become a member has
proved to be a great investment.

lol...good one Michael. I left a big Tamrac bag in the garage for a few days to air out after washing it and a bird decided to use a few of the lens pockets as a nest. I decided to let the birds do their thing till the baby birds flew the bag.

David,
Alien Bees are fantastic! I use 2 of their 1600 units and a 400 unit along with an umbrella and their 22 inch Pan reflector. There are probably thousands of articles on them. Just use GOOGLE and I'm sure you'll find plenty of reviews on them.

absolutely yes

Thanks Bob.

Thank you Mark.

Anyone know if and when the rebates do start will there possibly be one for the 30D? I'm still holding out to see and if there isn't I'm going to go ahead and buy it now.
-
My experience was smooth as well.

Alien Bees are great
"The Digibee" & "The Background Bee" will give you three B400 units like you are looking for.
Grand total minus shipping $888.44

Witht the xti you'd have a 112-320 while using the 70-200. That would make it an awesome travel lens paired with a wide angle. I think the build on that lens is weatherproof as well. Don't quote me on that. I do know the 2.8 IS version is weathersealed.
I can't comment on the 70-300 since I've never used it.

I don't care when the spring rebates start but I would like to know if you can
receive a rebate on a single item.
I was going to buy a new or used 20D but have decided to go ahead and buy a
30D. I am waiting for the rebates to begin till I make the purchase and that's
kinda the reason for this thread. I didn't know if I was waiting for nothing
since I'll be purchasing the camera by itself, no lens or flash.
Thanks for any help.

I just noticed that B&H has these going for $109. Are they any better than
their "ULTRA II" series? I know they can write at faster speeds but would I be
able to tell a difference while using my 20d?
Thanks so much!

used 550ex works wonders

Anyone know where I can pick one up at online? I remember when I bought my 1st
20d in May of last year and the 10d was priced @ $799 @ B&H. That was last May
though.
I'd much rather pick up a new 20d for around $700-$800 than a new 30d for
$1,120 and use the extra cash towards lighting equipment.
Thanks so much!
p.s. Did I read somewhere also about the Canon spring rebates coming out in
May? Would there be a rebate possibly for the 30d?

"The next morning, I wake up to discover that the 20D was on! The switch in the back was at the ON position and the battery indicator says it's out of power. EEEK!"
The elves came by later that night and borrowed your camera ;)

Jump on the bandwagon and go for it! You can't beat the optical quality and build of an L lens.
I was stressed out when I bought my 70-200 2.8L IS. The price tag made me wonder if I was making a good decision or not. Upon viewing the photos I can now say I don't care about the price anymore. I'm now willing to pay the higher prices to get that kind of quality in my photographs.
The build quality is great too. IMO you can tell a huge difference between an L and a consumer/entry level lens.
Good luck! Get and don't look back. You'll thank yourself and Canon later.

Ok, I just realized I had a brain fart. Please ignore this post...lol.
Thanks!

I want to use the flash for my subject to totally light them with it plus keep the ambient light in the background.
I wish I had an example I could post so I could show you what I mean.
-
Thanks Gary for chimming in with some help.
"Shutter Speed controls the ambient light exposure"
From what I understand I have to shoot 125th or slower with the cameras max flash sync. I figured I'd need a few ND filters since the ambient light might require a shutter speed between 250 - 8000th of a second depending on how bright it is outside. That would be too fast and hence the reason for the ND filters.
-
Thanks for taking a second to help out btw. I'm going to start shooting outside
with my AB's and I wanna make sure I know what I need to purchase before I
spend any cash. I have three Alien Bees strobes already and need to know if
I'll need any ND filters to use on the lens. I'll need to shoot around 125th of
a second and since this is the cameras fastest shutter sync on my Canon 20D.
I'll be using a 70-200 2.8 IS & a 17-40. I was kinda worried about stacking
filters on the 17-40. Should I buy 1 or 2 three stop filters, 0.9, and stack
them to bring down my shutter speed? I figured after I get the shutter where I
need it with the filters I'll just bump up the strobes till I like what I see
on the LCD.
Thanks so much. I hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Bill,
Thanks again there buddy. I've never had to shoot at 1600 before and after reviewing the photos I did notice a bit of noise in some of the darker areas in the photo's. Will had mentioned about the 5D being better at higher ISO's and I immediately remembered having to bump up to 1600 for the wedding. If the 5D is better at handling higher ISO's then I'm sold. I'm trying my best to buy equipment that is going to help me in my business and last long enough to pay itself off and then some. When it comes down to the lens I've come to realize the L series that Canon makes are the ticket if you want something that's gonna last a while. That's not to say that 2nd and 3rd party aren't just as good ;)
Will, that's crazy you mention those lenses. I've been eyeing all three especially the 135mm. The 85mm sounds like a sweet lens from the reviews I've read.
