    Ziggy,

I am not usually a fan of portraits made with diffused or soft-box light because too often they do not light the planes of the face and show no contrast. Your photo, on the other hand, demonstrates that soft light doesn't have to be boring. You have enough difference in your lighting to show the roundness of the young woman's face very flatteringly. Well done.

In addition, your color sense is superb. You have not allowed jarring or discordant colors to intrude. Well done again.

Finally, you've managed to get just enough hairlight to separate the top of the woman's head from the background cleanly. Very well done.

This is a fine portrait demonstrating your ability to read the light. Congratulations.

The best of photojournalism doesn't capture the biggest celebrity or the bloodiest battle. It, instead, captures a moment of intense emotion. Most of the enduring news photos have that quality — as does yours. It's powerful, not because it's a "big" moment, but rather because it's a small but very personal moment that viewers can understand and feel for themselves.

William Albert Allard once wrote that his best pictures were found on the fringes of the situation he was photographing. I have found that to be true as well. It is often better to turn my back on the drama of the news setting, and to photograph the faces or reactions of the people observing the news making scene. There you find sometimes subtle, but very real emotion that shows the humanity of the news.

You have done a very good job of using the small private moment to represent the larger and more impersonal truth. In these people's faces, one can see the pain of loss and despair.

    Bravo.

    Maria,

This is a good fashion photograph. Most of the shots published in this category are glamour or portrait, but not fashion. Fashion photography has to do with clothing or accessories, not the model. But your photo places the emphasis squarely on the clothing, making the model secondary. Good job.

On the technical side, my only suggestion would be to create a little more contrast between the subject and her background by toning down the surroundings, and leaving the model and her ensemble bright and colorful. Just my suggestion.

    A good effort.

    Facundo,

Exquisite photo. The lighting and post-processing are perfect and fit the mood of the photo wonderfully. The catchlight in the eyes make this photo sparkle. Very well done.

An excellent moody photograph. It's not the sort that could be a stand-alone photo in a newspaper, but it certainly might get used in a magazine with a story about the community or its activities. Well done.

A young lady plays a piano backstage during a break in rehearsal for a

musical. She was one of the vocalists in the production, but during

the break simply sat at the piano in the darkened backstage and played

    classical music.

Good idea with nice tones. The BW rendering takes away many of the elements of the photo that might be distracting.

On a technical note, portrait photographers strive to avoid the angle of the face in which the nose crosses the cheek — as it does here. Perhaps if the model had turned her head just a few degrees more to her left? A small point in an otherwise good effort.

It's just a matter of opinion, but I disagree with the previous comment. I think the bike helps frame the center of interest in the photo. Were this my photo, I would probably have cropped it differently, but again, that's a matter of opinion.

Anyway, it's a good photo with a lot of possibilities.

    Ed,

I think this is an excellent portrait. I like the Karsh-like lighting and the simple posing. I also like that you didn't feel like you had to blur every detail in the woman's complexion. Of course, at her age, she won't need much help! The light on the nails adds character, in my opinion, although some may think they distract from the woman's face. Perhaps she's proud of her manicure and wants the nails prominently displayed.

All in all, I don't know how to make the photo any more powerful. 7/7

    Robert,

Excellent pose and excellent use of window light to define the subject. On my monitor the image is a little flat, and I would boost the contrast just a little to expand the range. Perhaps, though, that has more to do with my monitor's set up. Very well done.

    Sergio,

You have an obvious gift for seeing color, and that is the strength of the photos in your portfolio. This shot, in particular, is awesome because of the color sense. Terrific.

    Stephen,

I like everything about this shot. I like the perspective given by shooting close to her foot so that proportions are rattled a bit. I like the fact that the young lady (very pretty) is looking ahead and seems unaware of the camera. I am impressed by the fact that light reaches her face (must be reflecting off her leotard?). And technically, you managed to keep the tones within scale and not lose texture in the skin or leotard. Well done. 7/7

    Alan,

A good fire photo. The silhouette makes it clear that three firefighters are at work. If their shapes had not been so clearly defined, the point of the photo would have been lost. Good job. I agree with the previous poster that the photo benefits from cropping. The silhouette and the flames visible in the crop are evidence enough of the conflagration going on. A very dramatic scene.
