Wow.  I love the mist in the distance, the 3 layers of brightness, the amount of motion, the colors and tones, this is a magical image.  The rock/mountain is menacing.  Fantastic work!

  1. Maria,

Your work has always been excellent, but you're also right, it's become much better over time.  Your latest work is simply spectacular, and National Geographic is lucky to have your contributions.

  2. This is gorgeous, outstanding.  The starkness of the broken stone, the highlighted lichen give us a great sense of place, and the sunlight and beams are spectacular.  It's as if I was there, and it's magical.  Bravo.  Adding to favorites, my second time today, but still one of less than 100.  I don't think this could possibly be any better.

  3. A very nice depiction, beautiful light and colors.  I like the orange light coming out of the closest tower, and the fact that we have a bit of wild-looking grasses in the foreground.  Nicely done!

Great work to leap into action and get this image.  I don't think the timing could be better.  Sure, if you want to complain about lighting I guess if you could have told the bird to take a different angle you might not have the frog's eye in a shadow, and I guess you could ask for him to do this during the magic hour when you're all set up for him, but c'mon!  This is an outstanding image, and altogether as interesting as any hunting/feeding bird image that I've seen.  Bravo.

I don't understand the title, but I like the image.  Clear, crisp, and a good action moment, with nice colors in the background to accentuate your subject.  Well done!

It's fascinating.  The tonal shifts and the lines are wonderful, from the sharp-edged white to the pure black in the back, and the contrast between the sharp focus and blur are wonderful too.  It's a special skill to see something like this as a worthy subject for an excellent photograph.  Bravo!

Added to my favorites, of which I have less than 100 after all these years.  Really a superb image.

  4. A pair of tom turkeys doing a mating dance for a nearby hen. From a flock

of roughly 100 turkeys that I found in a valley in a park in a rural part of

    San Jose.

You didn't say, so I will - PLEASE VIEW LARGE.  The tones are wonderful and this is just gorgeous. The horizon is funny... it's an optical illusion, but it still looks a little crooked, like it's tilted down on the right.  It's not though, I checked.  In any case, the image here is absolutely outstanding.

  5. I'm drawn to this.  I'd like to see it cropped square, with the bottom of the frame being the point where the gravel embankment meets the edge of the image on the left, and then trim some of the sky on top to balance it as a square image.  This would remove the reflection in the pond, but for my tastes (maybe not yours) it would make a different and also very compelling composition.  My thinking:  I really like the tones and the feel of the leafless trees on the horizon, and would like to make them more of a focal point.

    Nice image!

Four toms in the process of courting a particularly interesting hen

  6. Wow, this is fantastic editorial work.  Where has this been published?  If it hasn't, it should be.  I'd like to get a real title and description for this, because no doubt a lot was going on when this image was created.  Marvelous, fantastic work.
