4.
We don't see Bald Eagles very often in Vermont, but last week this one showed up near the Lake Champlain Islands. There were two juveniles also. This shot was through some thick brush which you can see. They were around for 3 days.

    Bird ID

Yesterday I was at a local WMA just trying out a new lens. It was a gloomy grey overcast raining type of day. The attached image is a pretty severe crop. Obviously some Canada geese in here, but what are the others? I looked around on the Cornell site and other places but cannot ID these. Almost looks like a crossbreed or something. The closest I can get is the blue morph phase of Snow geese, but they have an all white head and they are smaller than a Canada. Anyone know what these are? Photo location is Dead Creek WMA - Addison, VT

  13.
Here is a more complete explanation of how the crop functions work.
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-5Ds.aspx
And of course:
http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/5DS/first-look/

  14.
The 5DS ® both have crop functions see below copied from Canon's website. Of course you could crop yourself as well. This is an interesting option and leaves you with kind of a hybrid camera almost. Frame rate is not a big deal compared to the 5D3 (5 vs. 6) but 7D2 and 1Dx offer double that if important to you. I am holding out for the 300mp so I don't have to buy a 500 F4!

Recording System

Recording Format
Design Rule for Camera File System 2.0 and EXIF 2.3
Image Format
Still Image: JPEG, RAW (14-bit Canon Original), RAW, M-RAW, S-RAW, RAW+JPEG, M-RAW+JPEG, S-RAW+JPEG

Video: MOV (Image data: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC; Audio: Linear PCM)
File Size
Full Size

Large: Approx. 50.3 Megapixels (8688 x 5792)

Medium 1: Approx. 39.3 Megapixels (7680 x 5120)

Medium 2: Approx. 22.1 Megapixels (5760 x 3840)

S1 (Small 1): Approx. 12.40 Megapixels (4320 x 2880)

S2 (Small 2): Approx. 2.50 Megapixels (1920 x 1280)

S3 (Small 3): Approx. 350,000 Pixels (720 x 480)

RAW: Approx. 50.3 Megapixels (8688 x 5792)

M-RAW: Approx. 28.50 Megapixels (6480 x 4320)

S-RAW: Approx. 12.40 Megapixels (4320 x 2880)

Crop - 1.3x

Large: Approx. 30.5 Megapixels (6768 x 4512)

Medium 1: Approx. 24.1 Megapixels (6016 x 4000)

Medium 2: Approx. 13.6 Megapixels (4512 x 3008)

S1 (Small 1): Approx. 7.6 Megapixels (3376 x 2256)

S2 (Small 2): Approx. 2.5 Megapixels (1920 x 1280)

S3 (Small 3): Approx. 0.35 Megapixels (720 x 480)

Crop - 1.6x

Large: Approx. 19.6 Megapixels (5424 x 3616)

Medium 1: Approx. 15.4 Megapixels (4800 x 3200)

Medium 2: Approx. 8.7 Megapixels (3616 x 2408)

S1 (Small 1): Approx. 4.9 Megapixels (2704 x 1808)

S2 (Small 2): Approx. 2.50 Megapixels (1920 x 1280)

S3 (Small 3): Approx. 0.35 Megapixels (720 x 480)

  15.
Colin,
Thanks for the response. What camera body are you using? Just asking because some will AF at F8 (1DX, 5D3, and maybe 7D2) if you have the latest firmware upgrade. I am banking on AF with my 5D3. Or is it because of an older Teleconverter?
Oops! missed where you said 6D. I don't think the 6D is capable of AF at F8?

  16.
Doing my part to add a post to the very quiet forums these days, LOL!
I have the new 100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS II lens on pre-order and just in case I actually get it someday I have a question.
Does anyone know if this lens works ok with the first gen 1.4X teleconverter? All of my other L lenses work fine (i.e. 70-200 f2.8 IS gen 1, 300L (non-is) etc.) but I noticed the statement that "This lens is fully compatible with extender 1.4X III" so it has me wondering a bit. Hate to spend another $500 if I do not have to.
I know I will not have AF with my 7D, but should be ok on my 5D3 with firmware upgrade to AF at F8.
Has anyone tried this Combo?

Thanks

  18.
Brent,
One thing to consider is forward compatibility with non-manufacturers lenses. Years ago I bought a couple of Sigma EX series lenses and they worked very well with the camera bodies I had at the time. At some point when I upgraded my camera bodies (EOS3, I think) I was disappointed that they would not AF and other functions were not working as well. There was an upgrade to the lenses but I somehow missed it. These days I pretty much use L glass for all my lenses. Yeah they are more $, but manufacturers seem to have a tendency to support their own glass more completely. Just something to think about.

  19.
I would definitely recommend the 32gb route as well. B&H lists the 32gb at $83.39 and the 64gb at $149.00 I have a first gen 7d (18mp) that gets about 610 shots from a 16gb card and my 5D3 gets about 1066 from a 32gb. Either one is 160MB/s read and 150MB/s write. I have been using SanDisk Extreme/Extreme Pro CF cards for years with no issues. 32gb works for me, I just have several 32gb and several 16gb cards to overcome running out of storage. If I am away for a while I bring my laptop and a WD drive with me for back-up.
