Hi Carl,

 

I really love this image for it's simplicity, with the use of just two contrasting colours and the clouds running in a diagonal line across the frame. Most people would have included a horizon and framed it with a wide angle lens, but your image is much stronger this way.

 

I'd like to see more of these abstract images, keep up the good work.

All the lenses I have are fixed Nikkors with 52mm filter thread, so I guess I'm lucky I only have to buy one filter. Next time I use black and white IR I will give the 87 filter a try.

All pictures were taken with a Nikon 24mm lens, a red filter and the camera on a tripod. It's been several years since I last used IR film, but I tend to use it at the manufacturer's recommended setting and then bracket one stop either way. That is, aperture at f/11 and a shutter speed of 1/125th second in bright conditions (sunshine) and an additional two exposures at 1/60th and 1/250th second. That ensures at least one good exposure, as you will know this film is a bit tricky to use.

 

I haven't used the 87 opaque filter yet, it would be interesting to shoot the same scene with a red 25 and an opaque 87 filter.

 

Focusing using the hyperfocal marks on a fixed wide-angle lens or standard 50mm ensures plenty depth-of-field. I haven't tried it with a telephoto, where focusing would be more critical.

 

I'm not familiar with Joe Padua's work, please tell me more about him.

Hi Jana,

 

I think we all have things to learn. I have been involved in photography for more than 30 years and still there are times when I get it all wrong and have nothing to show for my efforts. But once in a while everything seems to come together and you get that image you want to blow up and put on your wall. If on top of that someone else likes it and you get a positive response, then that's a great bonus.

Maybe a white cloud would have been useful, but it would be a different image altogether. I like the contrast between the leaves and the dark sky.

 

I have checked out both of your portfolios and find some very inspiring images in both.

Very nice picture, Saleem. The golden leaves on the right just close the picture off nicely. I really love the reflections in the water and that mixture of warm and cool tones.

Very nice. An unusual viewpoint and a great contrast between the colours of the mushrooms and the leaves, complemented by the green moss on the tree. The mushrooms are all clearly visible, without overlapping each other. Top marks for this picture.

Great use of back-light and silhouettes. The shape of the clouds adds an interesting pattern to the picture, and the landscape format suits it perfectly.

Nice, with the church in one corner and the moon in the opposite corner. Did you encounter any problems with the exposure, or is this a double exposure ? I've tried to incorporate the moon in night shots, but exposures for the moon and the main subject are usually way off, so I usually end up doing a double exposure on the same frame of film.

Great control of light and good composition, with the person in a strong position within the frame. Without the person, the picture would still be good but would lack impact.
