Evgeny,
Thanks for the scanner information. From the results you got I am impressed!!!
What medium format do you use?
I love my Kodak Monitor folder (620 Film, 6X9CM, Coated 101mm F4.5 Anatstigmat Special lens) for landscapes, Yashicamat for Portraiture and my Agfa Clack for sheer fun.
-
Evegny,
Lovely shots!!!
The Argus did very well but you did even better.
Did you scan directly from the negative (I am new to scanning)?
-
A bit off thread, but I agree with Dante Stella, the one camera I would grqab if I had five minutes to get ready for a big trip would be my Konica Hexar AF.
In terms of pre-70's classics, hmmmmmmmmmmm. A Rollei 35 would be hard to beat. The Ambi Silette looks nice but I've never used one. Heard great things about them though :)

1000 Prayers for you all all the others affected by this tragedy

Wow, who was it that called photography the mirror with a memory? I will *never* throw out old film I find again. Gene, thank you for saving and sharing these with us.
-
As has been said earlier, I know of no film camera that is quieter than the Hexar AF. They are spookily silent in both shutter and wind while in silent mode. The lens is incredible. They are built like tanks too.
-
Mike, thanks!!!
Donald, wow. Thanks for the well thought-out (and detailed) advice.
B&H is indeed out of stock. Ought to have ordered it earlier. My bad. Ah well There are alternatives including spooling my own. I am taking you advice about e-bay and cameras with spools. Of course if I happen to snag a Bantam special... ;)
-
Box cameras can make good street cameras, most don't even recognize my Agfa B-2 Cadet as a camera! The Clack can be easily handheld and used in this way too. Till I saw Jorns shots I hadn't thought of using mine for available light/indoor work.
-
I Adore my Clack. For 25$US on E-Bay it really cannot be beaten as a bargain in the quality/cost field.
Jorn, nice shots :)
-
Thank you for the link. Sadly they seem to only offer processing for 828 filme, no loaded film or empty spools :(

Hi,
I just got a very clean Kodak Flash Bantam and would love to try
this out. I have checked the lens using a ground glass the image
looks sharp and contrasty. While I can find a couple of sources for
828 (B&H for one) mine came without an empty take up spool. Can
anyone suggest a source?
Thanks,
Lili

Oskar is right, the phonecam is taking a big bite out of the dedicated digicam market. The fact that most of the HP cameras are Ugly Boxes without the desing charm of the old box cameras doesn't help either.

Could not find a Bantam Special I liked at a price I can afford. However I did win a Flash Bantam, it came today, cannot wait to get home and try it out!

Gary,
The 8x11 Minoxes, especially the older ones are seen as being far more collectibile. They also have the cachet of being real live spy cameras, having been really used in espionage. The 35's are far younger, made of "plastic" and use normal 35mm.
Their appeal to me is the Razor Sharp Lens, incredible compactness for the format, and featherweight. Not to mention the silent operation as well. They are also completely non-intimidating.
Mine is with me every place I go.
Here is a site with the various Minox 35 Models-

That is lovely work such old film. I have seen and handled both the Flash and Special Bantams. Almost as small as my Minox 35GL!! The Special with that lovely f2.0 lens...ok time to hit E-Bay!!!

None I know of with TTL metering.
Older but very good cameras are the Minox 35 gl/gt/ml series or the Chinon Bellami.
Good luck finding the latter.
These are all scale focusing but with 35mm lenses and fast film depth of field will carry you a long way.
One trick is to realizee with a 35mm lens the width of the frame at the subject distance is roughly the same as that distance. With practice this can make you very fast and accurate enough.
The only Autofocus Camera that is quiet, tough, fast and accurate enough for this kind of shooting is the Konica Hexar AF.
But it is heavy, a bit pricey and too big for most pockets.
I use my Minox 35Gl (which is with me all the time) or my Black Hexar.
-
I have had the Black Hexar for 7 years. In fact it is my primary camera, at least for people/travel/running around photography. It handles beautifully, fast smooth and quiet. The lens is superb. I would not call it a P&S though. As one of the posters here said, it fits in a class by itself. Dante Stella defines it as the one camera he would grab if he had to leave on a round-the-world-trip and had 5 minutes to pack.
I agree with that assessment.
My P&S's are a mint Minox 35GL and a Ricoh R-1.
The Minox has the same focal length lens as the Hexar (I LOVE the 35mm Focal Length and enjoy the one lens challenge), is very sharp, tiny and quiet.
The Ricoh is slim, elegant, and full of features. The view finder is quite good. It also has a very fragile LCD display which fails often makes finding the correct flash mode (or any mode for that matter) very difficult. The lens is a bit too wide for my taste for shots of people (but it does very well on objects like buildings).
The result is that the Minox 35 is with me all the time.
Exactly the main purpose of a compact camera.

The is some very good stuff here.

The Kodak Bantam Special, Arte Deco hottiness oozes from that little gem. It just cries Film Noir. One day I will get one and do my best Veronica Lake look while out shooting..

Michael,
THe Hexar "Stealth" I have came with a heavy, silver "Hexar" cap that seem to be held in place by friction. It is incredibly easy to drop, though being silver and really heavy you can generally find it easliy enough by the pain in your toe (should it land on it) or the impact crater (joke). Seriously a snap-in cheap black generic black plastis caps works great. As does a 1.5 UV Daylight filter, with that as has been mentioned elsewhere the lens/barrel system is really well sealed and protected.
It is my favorite camera, the only one I carry more is my little, light and sharp Minox 35.
Hope this helps.

Thank you!!! That advice, especially about the Hood and filters will very much help.
-
Are there any Red, Yellow, or Green filters for B&W work with the
Minox 35?
Thanks,
Lili
-
David,
Don is exactly right about the shutter lag issue. I started with the El (which is also super fast) and really hated the first time I tried an Af camera :(
The Hexar is the ONLY AF camera I have tried that does not lag horribly. It is the only AF camera I own ;)
I agree about the soft touch finish, I actually prefer my GL on that point.
Though I am now hunting a GT-E as well.
BTW do you any good sources for Minox 35 filters?
Like yellow or red?
I do primarily B&W work.
Thanks,
Lili
-
Stephen,
I may be very interested
What is the condition of the camera?
I just got a Kiev, and am told the original Minolta from which it is copied is much better (even though fixed focus, the lens is faster and more contrasty).

I have not seen him posting in a while. Does anyone know if he is ok?
In fact this forum seems very quiet as well...
