1.
Last Saturday I was a photographer at the Hackett Rundle Cup, at Tidworth Polo Club. It's the annual match between the British Army and the Royal Navy

Action shot
7D+400/2.8+1.4x
<a title="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/285/19471553269_1ffdd82b95_b.jpg" alt="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" width="800" height="533" />

Action shot
7D2+100-400
<a title="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/521/19035599904_e66a942412_b.jpg" alt="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" width="800" height="533" />

The winning Army team
5D3+24-105
<a title="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/395/19470191100_ff251f2abb_b.jpg" alt="Hackett Rundle Cup 2015" width="800" height="533" />

  2.
Hello Mark, I've got the 40D, 70-200/4 non IS and the 24-105. Additionally I have the 17-40 to go with them.
I've had the 17-40 for about 9-10 years and love the quality. It doesn't get used a great deal these days because there's not much need for one in what I photograph (polo), but I can vouch for it's quality and for it's excellent fit in with the other gear. So my 2p would be to look no further.
I don't have any experience with the Tokina.

  3.
Given the shutter speed I would expect the image to be sharper, I've had results like this myself. Was the IS on? Was it in the correct mode? Do you also see this with the shorter lens?

    I can believe this was a race track shot. I like it, it's a good capture and it's also some very nice style.

  8.
Here are some long exposures from my recent trip to Venice.
I was trying out my new Hoya ND1000 and MeFoto Day Trip tripod. Both were excellent. The tripod could be set up on walls or bridges and not get in people's way, but the quick release plate it uses meant I had to keep a 5p coin in my pocket; none of the Euro cent coins fitted the slot!

San Giorgio Maggiore
Taken at mid-day - 5D3+24-105 iso-100, 30s, f11, stacked ND8+ND1000
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/441/18574575124_bd563b8443_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />

Ponte dell'Accademia
Taken mid-morning - 5D3+24-105 iso-100, 30s, f6.3, stacked ND8+ND1000
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/501/19010942789_d8b6329039_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />

Riva delgli Schiavoni at the Rio de Palazzo o de Canonica
Taken at dusk - 5D3+24-105 iso-100, 4m, f11, ND1000
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/362/19170964336_70f076c629_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />

    I like cafe table shots and this one is also a nice BW. I may have been tempted to move the napkin out of shot, but placement of the other items and the people in the background is very good.
  13. Welcome to PN Praveen. This is a delightful composition that is beautifully lit. The bright reflections in the oil paintings behind the models highlights them very nicely. Great work.
  14.
Thanks Jan.
I hope things are going well.

  15.
I had a few days in Venice last week. I saw the usual sights, and spent some time visiting a few of the Venice Biennale exhibitions and some of the out of the way locations. I also tried out my new Hoya ND1000 filter, but those results have not been to the taste of the PN cognoscenti.
These were taken with a 5D3, the wide angles were taken using the Samyang 14/2.8 and the interior was taken using the 24-105.
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/512/19142363781_ef44ca7a72_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/275/19112758436_959010e88e_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="Venice by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3743/18516402804_01bdf2ed9c_b.jpg" alt="Venice" width="800" height="533" />

  16. The 7D2 uses a USB3 connection. It comes with a little screw in adaptor that keeps the cable securely in place. I would expect the 5Ds would have something similar. It works very well with the 7D2 and is probably rather more solid and secure than the micro USB used with the 5D3, so I wouldn't see it as a problem.
  17.
The EF 17-40/4 L looks like a good option. I've used the 17-40 on a 5D and it works very well in conjunction with the other L lenses you have (which I also own). It may not be the most modern lens in the Canon stable, but it's a perfectly good piece of glass that will give years of quality service.
It's worth heading out with your camera and trying lenses out with whoever has them in stock. You may find the newer generation 16-35/4 grabs your imagination and you have a target to save for, or you may find an off brand lens that you like.
My 2p

  19.
Last weekend I spent a day with our son and his Airsoft team at a new venue, the Middle Wallop bomb dump. Middle Wallop is home to the Army Air Corps. I was very fortunate to work alongside a serving British Army combat photographer.
These were taken with a mixture of 40D+85/1.8, 5D+Sigma 50/1.4 and 7D+70-200/4
<a title="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/323/18075385723_8f95955462_o.jpg" alt="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/348/18509858629_fc7049b983_o.jpg" alt="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft" width="800" height="533" />
<a title="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/307/18508288958_be281938fe_o.jpg" alt="House of Wolves at RIFT Airsoft" width="800" height="533" />

  20.
I think elements of the Royal Photographic Society will think along the lines you suggest, but I like to look at what the photographer saw and perhaps to have an idea of what it felt like. I particularly don't want to see what a third party that has never witnessed it thinks it ought to look like.
I often look at HDR images and wonder what they would look like presented in documentary fashion.

    A nice composition and macro, the pale line behind the subject makes an interesting addition the the image.
  23.
Last weekend the Best of British Polo event was played at Tidworth. In the first game, the RAF played the Royal Navy, in the second game disabled ex-servicemen played alongside members of the British Army Polo Team and the third game featured the top British professionals under 25. The first two were shot with a 7D2+100-400.

Royal Air Force vs Royal Navy
<a title="Best of British Polo 2015 by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/560/18340488781_75dfca4ac1_o.jpg" alt="Best of British Polo 2015" width="800" height="533" />

The Heroes Cup
<a title="Best of British Polo 2015 by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7757/18151278960_69280fd191_o.jpg" alt="Best of British Polo 2015" width="800" height="533" />

Best of British Under 25s
<a title="Best of British Polo 2015 by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8897/18312583806_d8fccf5c03_o.jpg" alt="Best of British Polo 2015" width="800" height="533" />
