Mark, good to see another North Carolina resident on this forum! I'm in Winston-Salem.
-
Very interesting. Do most of you take a reading from a light meter and go from there? I use my camera metering to tell me what to shoot on.
-
How many of you shoot manual all the time, especially at weddings?
I find it rather difficult to use manual in a fast past situation
like a wedding as I'm constantly trying to make my exposure correct
which seems to cause me to "miss the moment" and I still have to
make corrections in Photoshop.
I'm not asking what type camera you use, just want to know what you
setting you shoot a wedding on.

Marc, I shoot with a Canon 20D and just bought my first fast lens 70-200 4.0L (for some sports shots). Which lens do you use to give that "glow"? If I shoot RAW, it is really important that I have all the lighting correct if I can just fix it in a RAW converter? I am also lacking a film camera but may purchase one just to shoot B&W film (not sure yet).
Why can't I live in Michigan?
-
Marc, as you know, I'm a big fan of your work and would like to
capture photographs such as yours so I must ask....how do you get
your B&W photographs to look like as if they are glowing?

A curious question from a previous post which mentions you can be a
master at photography but go under quickly without proper marketing
leads me to question the photographers on this forum as to how you
market your business to stay afloat? Do you advertise in the local
paper, The Knot.com, The Wedding Channel, local bridal magazines,
radio, etc.? How do you get your business name out there and make
it work to your advantage like say...Gary Fong who says he isn't in
the phone book and has an unlisted number....
-
Thanks for the response guys...I plan on buying that 70-200 4.0L lens...boy, oh boy, I can't wait to do this shoot :)
-
It helps to read your post before posting....I meant I have a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 (it's not an L lens). Should I be ok with this lens. It's not the sharpest but it does a good job.

My sister is a mountain bike racer and wants me to photograph an
upcoming race. I have a Canon 20D, 50 f1.8, 25-78 f2.8 lens and the
standard lens that came with the camera. I thought about buying the
70-200 4L lens but was unsure if the lens I already have will be
sufficient enough to capture some nice shots. Any suggestions and
advice?
-
Michael, can you provide some advice on how to fix that?

I just finished shooting the revewing of the vows today and for the
most part the photos turned out fine; however, some of the photos
were blurry. I know you run the risk of camera shake below 1/60 but
even photos at 1/150 my people were semi-blurry. I used my Canon
20D with a Tamron 28-75 2.8 for the majority of my shots. I have
the camera set on evaluative metering, ISO 400, flash was on, AL
Focus AF, Contrast Mid. High, Sharpness Mid. High, Color
saturation Mid. High, from the points of focus (in my viewfinder) I
have it set on center (should it be set on something different)?
What other information can I provide so receive better feedback?<div></div>

I was asked to photograph this "renewing of vows." I think it's going to be very simple with the wife wearing a yellow dress suit of some sort. No garter or bouquet toss. I'm not really sure how to photograph it but I'll give it my best shot(s) :)
-
How many of you have photographed couples who are renewing their
vows?
-
You can always try photopulse. It's about $36.00 and you can play music with it. I know the bride broke down in tears when I showed it to her. I also dug around in My Computer and found something called moviemaker and use that when I don't use photopulse. With this I can create credits and and intro.

Hello everyone! I am a newbie to the photography world and am doing
my best to understand ambient light, my flash, exposure, etc., but
wanted to get some suggestions on using flash fill in sunlight. I
will be taking portraits outside and it will be sunny and 70. I
will be placing the subjects in shade (where available). I have a
Canon 20D, 450EX flash and a Tamrom 28-75 f2.8 lens. What do you
find to be the typical settings for outdoor portraits?
-
Try ebay. That's where I got my mannequin.
-
Marc, I found your response to the flash technique question posed
earlier very helpful. Did you learn this by trial and error or did
you read a book explaining the ins and outs of getting the correct
exposure for flash and ambient light? Your photographs look like
you never use a flash and that's what I think makes your photographs
stand out against many on this forum. I guess you can say I'm a
huge fan of your work. Please give more examples of the lighting
situations/dilemmas you have encountered and how you were able to
correctly expose your photos with flash and available ambient light.

I meant to tell you to create a photo gallery in Photoshop, copy the thumbs from the thumbnail folder into the thumbs folder in Simpleviewer and then do the same for the images then go into the imageDate.xml file and make sure it looks exactly how you have your photos labeled.
Sorry for the confusion....it's been a long really rough week. Let me know if you get baffled and I'll try to walk you through it.

It's a good thing my husband just brought home a CRT monitor. I'll call my lab today and ask about a calibration kit. Thanks for the advice guys.
-
I just recently shot an engagement session, color corrected the
photos on my laptop computer and then sent them to a lab for
printing; however, when I received the photos back, they were
somewhat darker than my corrections. When I viewed them online, the
photos looked great (as I checked them on 4 different computers) and
I am a little baffled as to why my photos turned out different on
paper than on screen. Is this a calibration issue on my end? I've
had Photoshop class and feel I have a pretty good feel for color
correction. Should I just let the lab color correct my photos
instead of doing it on my own?

I use Simpleviewer for my photo gallery and love it (so far). I created my photo gallery in Photoshop and saved my thumbnails and images in the Simpleviewer folder. Once I saved them in the Simpleview folder I opened imageData.xml in Wordpad and made sure that I had the photo numbers and spelling (caps included) the same. If you spell photo like Photo and it's listed in imageData.xml as photo, your pictures will not show up. The spelling, numbers and spacing has to be EXACTLY like the thunbnails or it will not show up. If you have any more specific questions, please feel free to email me and I'll try to explain how it works better. It took me a couple of hours to get it right.

I would resize them but the gentleman on the left is short.

I don't know why I didn't think about that....what an awesome idea. I love it and this forum....thanks!
