Somewhat OT but re: "forgetting a tripod."
Used to do this all the time until I realized there was no point in storing it in a closet. Keep it in your car. If you have and regularly drive two cars, get two tripods.

Among current Nikon bodies the D90 seems to offer the best cost/quality ratio.
Best bang for the buck, as they say.

Another Panasonic GF1 vote.
btw, How do you get to be a fine art photographer? Is there an application form to fill out?
Mr. Lee is on to something here with the People Who Matter suggestion: Al Steiglitz said your work becomes fine art when a rich person buys it.
As far as camera advice goes, I'd listen carefully to Mr. Henderson who really is a fine art photographer, though I'm doubtful he'd declare himself such.

Problem with the aforementioned Canon G11 and most P&S cameras is the tiny sensor.
Charles, would you like a Nikon version of the Panasonic Lumix GF1 with its much larger micro 4/3 sensor? Some think it is in the works.
Or, how about a Nikon GF1-like camera with a DX size sensor? Sign me up!
Interesting times.

I use a polarizer on creeks, brooks when I want to partially remove reflections to get the water to be more black and less white. Slow SS then for silky water.
OTOH, no polarizer and fast SS to mostly stop the water if you want that "molten lead" look.

Bravo Luis! You and it (he? she?) will do good work together.

38mm f2.4 Konica

OK, Joshua. As I understand LR I have to choose one import method for RAW (convert to DNG) and another for jpegs. SHould I import twice? Will the RAW and jpeg be associated with one another? I shall try, see what happens.
SJ: I pre-ordered W7 to replace my Vista...that sounds promising.

Matt...can you tell me why can't I see jpeg thumbnails when I shoot RAW+jpeg?
Perhaps it's because I choose "Copy photos as Digital negatives and Import"

-

I shoot RAW (Lumix LX-3 and Nikon D700) and download them with Lightroom 2. At the same time, I am sending them to an external harddrive (Western Digital on desktop, LaCie with laptop) I'm running Windows.
In the external hard drives I get only file numbers displayed regardless what I set from the "View" pulldown menu.
If I shoot RAW+jpeg it is the same....just numbers.
I do get to see thumbnail images when I shoot jpeg only. True with both computers, both cameras.
Is this the way it has to be or is there a box I should have checked (doh!), unchecked (doh!) or something else I'm missing?

Good to see these tips. Thanks to all.
We're leaving Monday for a two month camping trip; Texas to New Brunswick and back. Plan to be in SMNP late October/early November (not really sure).
John, I like you're "if it has a brochure, avoid it" tip. A bit like Paris eateries...if the waiters speak perfect English, go somewhere else.
I'll be looking for those brown signs! My old Toyota 4Runner and new Nikon 14-24mm are eager. Me, too!

OK, nevermind,
uninstall>install got rid of it.

When I start LR I get a skeleton of the Library screen in B&W with no pictures/no color and a box which says:
"AgEntity Provider:get Entity Multiple Matching Entities."
The box says "Lightroom" at top and there is an "OK" button. Pushing it makes the box disappear but that's it.
I Googled various permutations of this box's message with no hits.
My other programs (on Vista 32) are working OK.
???

Another advantage is the CV will make an excellent wide/normal should you move to FX.
Good choice, John.

I'm with you on this Matt.
And although the B&W with colored (Blue!!) eyes makes me gag, I do like a good Chicken Dance from time to time.

Taylor-Cooke for triplets.
Rolleiflex for twins.
Lomographic for quads
Quintuplets? a Pentacon
In the event of only one child, put your single lens reflex on a monopod.

"Just so that everybody is closer to asking this question once(for some maybe twice)and breaking a photo.net record"
Angel, with all due respect to you Canonites, you have a way to go to match our obsessive insanity on the Nikon forum. We agonize over "50mm f1.8 or the old 50mm 1.4D or the new 50mm 1.4G" once or twice a week. Suspect we shall continue to do so forever.
As for this discussion, I'm jealous...wish Nikon made an equivelent to your 24-105 f4 IS.

Miracle In Dellville...
Last time I tried it I decided to just let it run after the black screen and "ticking" began.
After 15 to 20 minutes it resumed the start up sequence and seems to be working normally.
Seems.
So far.
I still be nervous!

My 1.5 year old Dell desktop (Vista 32) won't start. Used and shut it down normally yesterday.
This morning, it begins to boot up then after about 10 seconds, the screen goes dark and start up sequence stops.
I hear a regular "tick" sound from the tower every 3 seconds, much like a record stuck on a bad spot.
Shut it down manually and restarted with same results.

Thoughts?

Wow! so mine was made in the summer of 1961.
Thanks for that info JDM

Yes, John , I've had good experiences with KEH, also.
They must be stinkin' rich, too...their used equipment department takes the phrase "Buy Low, Sell High" to stratospheric levels. ;-)

Precision Camera in Austin, Texas reglued my peeling original leather cover back on and replaced deteriorating foam in the mirror box for $35 in 2003. Don't know how typical that was/is.
BTW, this may be common knowledge but...Greg, your F was made in 1965...1st two digits of SN# tell the tale...I believe this is true only for the "F" model.
My black straight F starts with 64. Bought it used in 1971 for $75.00 Aside from the aforementioned $35 cited above, have not spent anything on it. Used it last week and will again this coming week...doing a job for Texas Historical Commission...they demand film in addition to digital. Glad I still have it :-)
Actually, I'd never sell it.

I ordered a new Sigma 150 f2.8 macro from B&H recently.
As many of you know, they have a 14 day return policy.
Anyway, after a month of happily shooting typical macro shots --- subject in the center, out of focus backgrounds in the corners---I happened to shoot a flat object.
Corners looked soft. Hmmm, maybe it's me...Anyway, I ran some tests and discovered all 4 corners were soft with the upper right corner (on a horizontal) being worse than the other three. Soft at 2.8 and 4 . Stopping down to 8 helped, but not enough. Camera is a full frame digital (Nikon D700)

Since I also plan to use this as a landscape lens, this is not acceptable.
By now I have had the lens for 5 weeks. Called B&H and they were great...no arguments, no skepticism as to whether I know how to evaluate a lens...Indeed, they apologized although it is, of course, Sigma who is at fault, not B&H.
I sent it back for another copy (I still want a Sigma 150 macro!) AND B&H is paying shipping, both ways.

Thanks, Henry!

Wait until August 1st.
I am quite sure Version III will be announced the day after I buy Version II.
Therefore, in the interest of hastening Nikon's progress for the rest of you, I shall buy one tomorrow.
UPS should deliver your Version III next Tuesday.

How to produce this look? Post processing?

IMO, you are right, Thomas.
Note that the "civilians" on her board (AKA "paying customers") feel the same and are a bit perplexed by some of the techno obsessives on Photo.net.
The LEAST important part of her success lies in PostProcessing.
