Thanks Michael. That very image was my inspiration for this shot! It appeared within my first year on Photo.net, and viewing that image led me to essentially stalk the above image until I got the right conditions. I certainly do not mind the comparison as this shot is an homage to that one :-)
  1. Fabulous! I've been waiting for some 2014 shots of this phenomenon to arrive on PN. I'm assuming it was rather crowded as usual and the scene around you was a madhouse of shutter clicks?

    Hope!

That's a sundog behind the steeple, and it's the best placement of one I've seen in many years on PN. Great eye, well done and congrats on capturing the moment!

You caught an engaging pose from your subject, which strengthens the diagonal of the tree branch and enhances the naturalist feel of the whole portrait. And you found an excellent specimen to boot. Great interest here, well done!

  2. I like this FG composition and love the way that the light selectively yet coherently falls across the middle/right of the frame. I would probably prefer a little more room above the BG peak, as that sky is compelling.

Great concept, excellent composition. I believe some fill light on the FG flower might establish a more even tonal balance with the BG, if that idea appeals to you. Well done!

Awesome scene! The colors are fantastic. I assume they are enhanced for saturation, but their reflection off the snow provides terrific realism. That light is gorgeous.

Another first! Last time it was aurora and starlight through cloud cover; this time an overexposed aurora. Never seen that before. I agree the composition is well balanced with the tree at left doing important work here. Keep playing!

It's possible that the finishing effect detracts from the riveting eyes, but it also adds a lot of mood and mystery to the whole image. Without seeing the original, this version has stand-alone impact with its ethereal and almost ghostly feel. In some ways that makes the eyes even more piercing.
  3. Fantastic capture, details so sharp and the bird with such a terrific pose. The colors are gorgeous too, though maybe the whole image could benefit if the bird were pushed brighter a little bit. Congrats on getting this one!
  4. This is a compelling natural subject and excellent photographic study of it. I do like the diagonal composition you chose, and I would definitely keep that -

but I think pushing it rightward to give 2/3 of the image to the lit ripples and 1/3 to the featureless void, might be worth a try.
