Regina,
I was schooled in fine photography as well, Im fairly new to the wedding industry however as far as the contests go I must say that judging criteria is so very different between fine art and wedding photography although no matter what contest you sometimes wonder what reasons they were following when choosing a particular image.
However, I think that bashing work of fellow photographers isnt the nicest thing because while you mentioned that you do not wish to have your work judged here on this forum for the purpose of discussion, you give yourself the right to critique others in a very bad light.
I might be off here, but Ill ask anyhow- did you enter the contests and never won anything at the mentioned sites? Not to sound harsh, but your opinion maybe slanted by (conscious or not) bitterness and belief that your images "are better".
You do ask a good question however; what are other contests out there that one might whish to enter?

Wow! What an inspiration! Congratulations!
We should have success party for you! This is in such short time, it's actually amazing! You not only have talent you must be great with people (well I've been reading your posts here and know you are).
All left to say is that I wish you GREAT pictures for this season and lots of fun!
-
I personally think it's worth trying to enter. Anybody will send any images?
Fujifilm offers a separate prize if you mention that specific shot was taken on fuji film, so the image has a chance of winning both topknot and the fujifilm prize.
Howver, it is funny how for a film required shot you'll get a digital camera and 100 rolls of film :)
None the less I'm sending in some images.

I'm up for any of the books you have left. Agucham@yahoo.com

Museum is a great idea, but it will be on satruday, plus the Met is pretty dark even with a tripod shooting people might be challenging.
MOMA allows flash, however, it is very packed on weekends, any other ideas as far as indoor shoots?

Where to shoot an engagement in the NYC area? Central Park of course?
Have you found any locations within that are extreemly nice? Where
besides CP?
Anybody maybe have any examples, other "winter" engagement/wedding
portraits will be nice as well.
Thanks!

Stacy,
Oh you're going to get as many variations as responses. I like the flower shot, for the colors! It is true, that it does not 100% fit with the wedding theme... The one that is not *my* favorite is in the fifth row, middle - couple kissing. The bed shot is nice as well, but like the flower shot. I know this is not helping much, but for what is worth.

The site is too alike others I've seen from bigfolio however, I love your pictures. So as long as you just want to have clear and easy to navigate site to showcase your beautiful work then this is great! But I've seen few sites that look exactly like yours. Please do not take this the wron way, it's just my opinion and I'm no expert!

Hello all,
Im interested in pursuing M.F.A in Photography in or around NY
(have few schools in mind but this is not what I want to ask). What I
wanted to find out if there are people here or some of you might have
links to portfolios of people who already got in to such programs. I
need this as a reference point to see where I stand with my own work.
It does not need to be anything specific, I just want to see the
general level of photography submitted to grad schools. If any of
you might share your work or point out some colleges websites with
featured portfolios I would appreciate.
Although I have been fairly long time into photography both as
fine art and working (fashion, portraits and weddings as means to make
money and learn more) my portfolio for M.F.A seems always inadequate,
even to have it reviewed.
Therefore, I need to see other work to either encourage me to
work harder on it or push me to (at least) have it reviewed by
perspective schools.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. E-mails are welcomed.
Thank you very much.

How about getting a student photographer/ starting out photographer to do the job in digital instead of buying equipment that you're not sure he'll be able to use or know how to use. I think you might get better luck with that arrangement. Otherwise have him shoot film and as others said scan it.
-
I was thinking more of a declining reply but reply and let people know, thank them for interest...or not respond at all... "did you get my response" is very unprofessional so I rule that out!
Re the studio gig - that's the thing - I don't know if I should go for it... wanted to get opinons from you guys - the pros and cons of working for a large studio....
-
A studio has contacted me after seeing my portfolio. It's a rather
large studio. I don't know any details yet but wanted to get some
opinions of pros and cons working for a large studio... Thank you
for your advice.
Another quick questions kinda related to this. If somebody takes
the time to write you a long letter about them selves (an assistant,
second shooter, an associate...do you take the time, even if they
might not fit your needs to write them back? Do you think it's
more professional and polite to just let a person know (in a nice,
kind way of course) that they're not what you're looking for rather
than just not responding?
I've always responded with elaborate explanation and help to those
contacting me regarding work ... but when I person contacted me to
help them and wanted more infromation which I gladly gave to them -
I've never heard from them. I know we are busy people! (I have full
time job, I do Fine Art work, Wedding work and lately few model
portfolios... so I KNOW how busy it can be) but I just take the time
to reply... What do you guys think about that issue?
-
I've got 4 weddings this season from CL with one being destination wedding so it's been good for me.
-
With so many wedding photographers (I'm in NYC so it's crazy
here)... how do you guys distinguish yourselves from the rest? Is
it only good work? Word of mouth? Excellent advertising?... What
makes some better than the others? - I've seen some work that's good
but not thrilling and those photographers are getting raves... I
know it's a complete package - an attitude, work ethic, pictures
itself...but what else?

It is worth it, some people put much time into designing an album, altering pictures in photoshop, which takes time, a lot of time. Not to mention meeting with clients, discussing needs, etc. I'm not for extreeme prices, but if you want to offer a good package with a nice album, there's no way you can do it for a $1,000. It's not about being WORTH THAT MUCH, its about hard work and commitment that does not last ONLY ONE day...
-
ok, not that I knew that background is white and you can't see the whole mat, and picture is too big...here's another one, hope you can see what I mean on this one...
-
-
not as easy, I get a mat, with shadows, but not the true type that can be done because I've seen it. I was really asking for a 3D type of look, anybody that knows what I'm talking about please help!
-
Anybody can give me pointers on how to make a gallery mat on PS for
printing to give that effect of thicker mat around the picture just
like the real thing? I know I can purchase templates, never found
free one, but I'm sure it's not that difficult (I just wasn't able
to come up with exact one myself) but maybe you guys can help?
Thanks
-
Oh that last one is excellent! Love it!
-
Mark,
Thanks! About the couple dancing - somebody said that because of the harsh lighting - the picture is actually bad - it was a bride on contrary :) I like the photo as well...
Shiraz (I love your name by the way),
I've seen your site before and loved the simplicity. And I really like what you've done with mine. I'm so bad with the whole web page building stuff it will take me forever to do something I'll actually like- and I like yours... I think I could do it - it will just take me a long time but to have build by somebody (I've called to inquire about a price) and it's a little pricy for where I am right now. But I will definatelly check out the software! I don't know how lucky I'll be to come up with something like you did for me...
